I'm a big movie fan and, shamefully, I only watched this movie recently. I'm now officially a big fan of David Lynch. Bizarre, colourful, sadomasochistic, hilarious, engaging, beautiful, peculiar and bloody brilliant film! I'm sure there are more adjectives that are perfectly fitting for this movie.
This scene so creeped me out cause "In Dreams" is one of my favorite songs cause of the beautiful lyrics. Get a copy of "In Dreams" and listen to the lyrics as it's so beautiful.
@OhhhMyAxels Yeah really! I was totally blown away when he died, I thought he was going to live forever! I love Dennis Hopper, best on screen villain ever!!!!!
bless brad dourif (lord of the rings/child'splay/dune/cuckoo's nest) having a little dance in the background, shame the camera rarely gets any closer to him than that!
One of these Halloweens, I'm going to dress up as Ben, knock on people's doors and sing this song to them. It will be the best thing ever. I love this movie.
This scene would be even more surreal if Dean Stockwell had sung the Archies song Sugar Sugar, although that probably would have caused riots in movie theaters across the country. :)
@thedarkwarlord999 I saw this again recently, and I was struck by 1) how weird it was, and 2) how normal I thought it was when I was younger. Does that make sense?
@wookie72 I dunno- Lynch lives in his own world. Even i found it weird as hell the first time i saw it, but the second time it was normal- like any movie.
OMG THIS SONG WAS ON ALAN WAKE!!!!!! And Blue Velvet is by Lynch who created Twin Peaks. Which has sooo many similarities to Alan Wake I can't stand it. As soon as I saw this I started laughing like a mad man! OMG EPIC!
@springsteenrules I think the second scene wth this song is better. I'm just glad Orbison let Lynch use the song. I remember reading that when Roy first saw the film he was appalled, and Lynch had to do a lot of convincing.
@AngelofMusic04 I'm a Cinema Studies Graduate student at SCAD this year. I'm gona be there too! Can't wait to meet this amazing actress and see this American masterpiece on the big screen.
Really nice and deep film. Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, Isabella Rossellini and Dennis Hopper showed brilliant acting. The ending was just awesome. I miss the 80's and 90's - best era in cinematography
I have heard that there is a deleated scene from Blue velvet. that after frank Booth hits the fuckin' road with Raymond and crew , and they beat Jeffery Beaumont. he is raped by Frank Booth. is this urban legend or a real out take on the cutting room floor......... Let's Rock! or kcor stel! man from another place rules. the floor from the red room first appears in Eraserhead in the lobby
@MaybeYesNo90 Hopper was fantastic in this movie. I too loved how he flipped out in the scene. He looks like he's not trying to cry. I think it's what makes that character so scary, it's because he remains an enigma the entire movie, and Lynch knew we didn't want to know this guy, not personally, or in any other way, so even flipping out to the song makes him scary. Frank Booth is a walking nightmare, and a fantastic villain from a great actor and director.
@shogunblade also, it's pretty disturbing in the scene where we first see him abuse the "blue velvet woman" (can't remember her name), Frank keeps switching between playing either "Baby" and "Daddy", while she plays "Mommy", it's obvious he has childhood issues/conflicts with his parents
When I started getting into film I avoided Lynch because so many people complained about how his films made no sense. Then I saw Blue Velvet. I've since seen every other Lynch movie. Do they all make sense? Absolutely not. But that doesn't matter. Lynch's style taps directly into the darkest regions of the human Id: his movies don't have to make sense because they invoke emotions like few stories are able to do.
@Kagemusha08 while I agree they dont have to make sense in order to be enjoyed, if you analyze them closely you will see thematic elements and symbols that form a coherent whole. Blue Velvet makes a ton of sense, trust me, in fact, I'd argue that it is one of his most lucid films, while also being among his most bizarre. Even Mulhulland Dr makes sense if you watch it enough times
Great stuff...just watch the guy dancing on the sofa...and what happens in the other room...u will never know....David Lynch changed my perception of cinema....Now i always look at things before Lynch and after Lynch....!
This scene is so perfect. (Better even than Denis Hopper's death in True Romance!)
The goon drinking, the line on the singers jaw from the lamp, the wide shot at 39, the snake dancer, and the arrival of the girl (ringu??!), the double mime (both frank and the "singer" mime), the looko of anguish on hopper's face...
Damn, sounds like you know film making much better than I do!!! LOL!!! Agreed, though. A great scene. Man, I watched this probably 25 years ago when I was in high school. I loved it. Even went out and bought a leather blazer like Frank's!!! His rage is really disturbing. I'd love to know why this song gets him so upset! Happy New Year!
I liked this scen a lot, plus when theyt play it again and Hopper Beats Mc Lahan, the song reflects what Frank knows, that the character played by Isabella Rosellini will never love him, that she is coerced to ber with him, Th first time I saw the movie I thougt Kyle Mx clAhan character was going to be raped. Th song gives me the chills, Lynch is a magician
Well if that is true , and Lynch dint go along I guess it was for fear of censorship from studios , investors, the Mulholland Drive people you know them.
