Many of the names are left over from their 1997 appeal against Kyoto, and their position is/was stated as There is no convincing scientific evidence that [AGW will] cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Note their statement doesn't deny AGW, just the CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES. That's a significant difference.

It's true that in 1997 there was not yet a consensus that there would be 'catastrophic' climate disruption. That is STILL in some debate. In '97 there was barely consensus that AGW. As you recall it wasn't until the early 2000's that the research finally became solid and actionable.
Also of the 30000 scientists in PP, only about 1400 identified themselves as scientists relating to climate. Just because you're a scientist doesn't mean you know anything about climate change. As I said, many signed the petition 13 years ago when much less was known. A recent S.A. report estimated the current number of climate scientist who would sign the petition today at about 200.
What you conveniently aren't acknowledging is that 97% of scientists who are actively studying and publishing

The THEORY of global warming (that increase CO2 & methane trap heat, leading to higher temperatures) and the OBSERVATIONS of temperature trends are in accordance, especially at the poles - exactly where the theory says we should see the effects first. @motoxmainia, global warming is a TREND - climate scientists with be the FIRST to claim that isolated peaks or valleys in temperature or sea ice coverage are proof of nothing. The TREND is of retreat all over the world - glaciers and sea ice. The skeptics' only course of action right now is to cherry-pick the data that doesn't correspond with the trend (and only the side which favors THEIR argument) and use that as 'proof'.
makeinstall, fair enough. That was also 10-15 years ago. Future predictions will inherently always involve uncertainty. The physics has been very heavily investigated since then. No one can claim to fully understand the unbelievable complexity involved. The scary thing is, the current rates of ice retreat and warming are far outpacing the worst-case predictions. Climate scientists, instead of realizing they were too aggressive in their predictions are realizing they have been too conservative.

I read the article and it seems you're forgetting to read the Editors amendment to the article:
The amended version, which was brought to the attention of The Times by a reader, acknowledged the consensus that greenhouse gases could contribute to warming. What scientists disagreed about, it said, was the rate and magnitude of the enhanced greenhouse effect (warming) that will result. There is no consensus.

It's funny that even the oil industry, the ones who started the anti-global-warming rhetoric in the first place no longer disputes human-caused global warming. Their own studies have verified it. makeinstall, this forum doesn't seem to let me post links. Google "global climate coalition" which was an oil and car industry create group which was set up to counter the IPCC's findings. As it turned out their own scientists came to the same conclusion as the IPCC, at which point the Global Climate Coalition silenced their own scientists. There's an article in the Science section of the NY Times April 24/2009
The article you are referring to is from 1995 data and there is an editorial note at the end of the article detailing the disagreement on the impact of global warming. The article amendment simply states that there were disagreements based on the data at the time. This articles proves nothing but uncertainty in 1995. No one disputes the possibility of global warming but what is disputed is the current impact it has on the environment and whether it should be regulated by Gov..
The editor's note only says that the AMENDED REPORT mentions disagreements at the time. The scientific consensus based on further study has only become far MORE SURE of the impacts of CO2. That's why Copenhagen is no longer a discussion of whether or not we need to act. That fact was established a long time ago by the climate scientists. Unfortunately the media (at least some) is lagging far behind the science. You know it's bad when even the OIL INDUSTRY is making a plea for governments to act!

Many of the names are left over from their 1997 appeal against Kyoto, and their position is/was stated as There is no convincing scientific evidence that [AGW will] cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Note their statement doesn't deny AGW, just the CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES. That's a significant difference.

It's true that in 1997 there was not yet a consensus that there would be 'catastrophic' climate disruption. That is STILL in some debate. In '97 there was barely consensus that AGW. As you recall it wasn't until the early 2000's that the research finally became solid and actionable.

As I said, many signed the petition 13 years ago when much less was known. A recent S.A. report estimated the current number of climate scientist who would sign the petition today at about 200.

makeinstall, fair enough. That was also 10-15 years ago. Future predictions will inherently always involve uncertainty. The physics has been very heavily investigated since then. No one can claim to fully understand the unbelievable complexity involved. The scary thing is, the current rates of ice retreat and warming are far outpacing the worst-case predictions. Climate scientists, instead of realizing they were too aggressive in their predictions are realizing they have been too conservative.

The amended version, which was brought to the attention of The Times by a reader, acknowledged the consensus that greenhouse gases could contribute to warming. What scientists disagreed about, it said, was the rate and magnitude of the enhanced greenhouse effect (warming) that will result. There is no consensus.

As it turned out their own scientists came to the same conclusion as the IPCC, at which point the Global Climate Coalition silenced their own scientists. The article you are referring to is from 1995 data and there is an editorial note at the end of the article detailing the disagreement on the impact of global warming. The article amendment simply states that there were disagreements based on the data at the time. This articles proves nothing but uncertainty in 1995. No one disputes the possibility of global warming but what is disputed is the current impact it has on the environment and whether it should be regulated by Gov..

The editor's note only says that the AMENDED REPORT mentions disagreements at the time. The scientific consensus based on further study has only become far MORE SURE of the impacts of CO2. That's why Copenhagen is no longer a discussion of whether or not we need to act. That fact was established a long time ago by the climate scientists. While I don't think it is inherently evil to make a profit , I do think it is inherently evil to legalize ponzi schemes and make a profit through fraud. Like any form of socialism, insurance is designed to destroy free market principles by allowing the medical / pharmaceuticals to charge a group rather than an individual. That is why prices always go up.
I am agianst any form of central planing, be it from fraudulent monopolies or govt.

For the most part, large countries and economies should be able to weather the projected sea level rises.

Past times with more CO2? Not in the last 800,000 years according to data with a relatively high level of confidence. Attempts to delve further back in time suggest the last time the earth's atmosphere reached today's level of 387ppm was around 15 million years ago.
The high atmospheric CO2 leads to ocean acidification, melting ice caps and glaciers, more extreme weather, etc.
