However, as far as I'm aware, they can sentence him to three years and suspend some or all of his sentence. Suspended sentence happens all the time in first offense cases.

I argue that if you made a 1000 people carry a loaded gun to a club and 1000 people drive drunk for an indefinite period. I would guess someone would die on the road first.
If someone did use the gun then they probably meant it. The car kill would be purely an 'accident' of control.

I have to completely disagree about the sentence being too harsh.
He had an uncontrolled discharge of a firearm in a crowded nightclub. It's more luck than anything else that he shot himself rather than someone else.
That bullet could have gone anywhere - it could have also hit somebody else, maybe even causing a fatal wound.
If his gun went off in the middle of a national park then maybe it's too harsh - but a nightclub is full of people and usually crowded. That was far too reckless.

If I was the one giving the sentence I would suspend his gun licence for a year and give him three months of community service in a gun awareness program. Basically because this situation could have been a lot worse, someone could have gotten hurt or even killed and surely the gun must have gone off because it was badly holstered or was a faulty gun, but if that was the case then he could get a massive lawsuit against the gun manufacturer.

I suspect the main reason why the sentence seems so harsh is that you aren't getting the full story. For instance, why did he bring a gun into the club? It could have been attempted murder and that's the reason for the sentence - which may be too lenient rather than too tough. The gun might be illegal or unregistered, possession of other substances, the list goes on of possibilities.
Just to sum it up as "man brings gun to club, shoots self, 2 years wtf?" doesn't seem detailed enough.

no the judge isnt at liberty here because there is a mandatory sentence for what he did, which doesnt give the courts discretion
