Gingrich's book sold very modestly, could never justify such an advance. Under pressure Gingrich returned the money.

And in case anyone's forgotten, Gingrich wrote a book and then sold 50,000 copies to a corporation or a trade association, books which never sold, probably given away. That was a way to receive $300,000 from people trying to influence the Speaker of the House.
