The pit bulls are fine. It's the monsters that abuse, neglect, kill, discard them and let them run loose. I volunteer at an animal shelter and these dogs are some of the most loving dogs around. They are just like other dogs. Get more dog fighters in prison and make irresponsible dog owners accountable and these dogs will be fine. The pit bull haters need to read the National Canine Councils report on dog bites and get a reality and compassion check.

You have to be energetic and consistent, you have to have the time and patience to train and socialize them well, and thanks to hateful comments like yours you have to be thick skinned. It didn't bite me, it eventually slunk off. On the news story they make it sound like a monster, what they didn't tell you was that the poor thing was emaciated. The dog was also unaltered, it got put down and the owner got in no trouble at all. The news wants a good story, not the truth. Pits are the victims.

I'm trying to say that normally, pit bulls will not bite people, when they do, there are usually other circumstances contributing to their aggression (abuse, neglect, ect.). I know they are wonderful dogs. I spend every day with a well loved pit bull, I own one. He is snoring on the couch next to me right now lol. I know not all abused dogs bite. Mine is a rescue and was previously used as a bait dog, and is the sweetest dog on planet earth :)

BTW, the research I've done is in the field with dogs in public. I live in a dog town, dogs go everywhere. There are plenty of dogs that start scraps, but for some reason anytime we come across a pitbull, they always try to fight, and if they do get a hold of my dog, even for a second, he has always walked away bleeding. Research you say.... ask a vet.

I appreciate this post. I am plenty scared of this dog breed. I just never had any close positive experience with one but I believe what you are saying. It would be a real shame to exterminate the breed. I remember how afraid we were of the doberman when it became popular. One day I was stuck around one and when it was slobbering all over my hand, followed me around like I owned it and climbed in my lap, I was never afraid of one again. Nice people have nice dogs.

The same thing has been done to the german shepherd and the rottweiler. No dog is a bad dog. If you want to see what they are really like, go to your local shelter or humane society and ask to meet one. If people dont start to understand that it isn't the breed its the owners, their breed of choice could be the next "it" dog.

it's all about popularity. pitbulls are at the top of the list of human casualties because of popularity. in the 70's it was the dobermans and german shepards turning on masters. pitbulls by nature do not make good guard dogs. that's why they are easily stolen. police prefer to use what kind of dogs? dobermans and shepards. by instinct, they are better guard dogs. @adoptplz - when has a lab killed a kid? On public trails I use everyday, 1 of 3 people have dogs; whenever it's a pit bull they almost always want to fight! This is not because of their owners, or because they were "fighting dogs". It's because they are aggressive dogs by nature, nothing will stop that. Just like Rotts and dobermans, (which I have owned). Don't expect to have no problems in public w/ a pit, last year my dog was sent to the vet twice and attacked a # of times by pitbulls

Lol, 1000 and 3000 psi! They must really believe pits are land sharks or crocs. Bite power has to do with size and shape of the head. Getting a exact reading is hard, but dog bite powers never get higher than 3 digits. Mastiffs tend to have the highest numbers as well as other truely large breeds.
