Why couldn't they get alan menken back to do he songs? i know he worked on enchanted, but i felt that he shouldve worked on this to i mean what other project is he working on now? this movie couldve been better if he did, randy newman isnt exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, dispite the fact he did get music done on some of pixar's movies
I have to disagree with the comments on the animation, if only because Disney was clearly trying to evoke the visual style of the 1920s, which had a primarily muted color palette and very bold, simplified design. The art style of the time was very minimalist in reaction to the very busy designs of the late 1800s, and the visuals of the movie reflect that stupendously well. It's another example of animation-reflecting-period-art. Compare with Mulan or Hercules, for example.
Not memorable songs? I've seen the movie two times and I know all the songs by heart ^w^ I think everything about this movie was incredible...Absolutely fantastic...And on a personal note...It was one of the most heartwarming moments I've ever had in a cinema =) I'd give the movie a 10/10! *w*
Do you also own the soundtrack? There is no way you know the songs by heart. They are not even close of being as memorable as UNDER THE SEA, HAKUNA MATATA, or A WHOLE NEW WORLD. Not even close.
No, actually. I don't own the soundtrack...Just as a professional musician I think the soundtrack was absolutely fantastic ^w^ I myself play a lot of jazz...I play the saxophone and I had an easy time relating the the music =)
I'm still wondering if I should see this movie or not. I am taking reviews and opinions into consideration, but if this movie was the worst out of the animated classics (which I have been a fan of since a young girl) then that's a crying shame because it isn't as if Disney doesn't have the ability to wow us all... so you have to wonder... after soooooo long. But anyhow... What about Phantom of the Opera??? or Aida if they really want to make History with an Ethnic twist... So many great stories.
Oh please! Is the frog prince fairytale we all know the ending of that story. Putting spoilers alert in this one is like putting spoilers alert in the Passion of the Christ.
What are you talking about every sigle song was very memberible to me and the songs really made me feel for the characters and made get into the plot more. A very beautiful movie, it's like disney made it just for us:)
When I say memorable, did you leave the theater singing the songs? I doubt you remembered the lyrics unless you bought the soundtrack beforehand.
When Lion King came out, people were leaving the theater singing Hakuna Matata and in Aladin... A Whole New World.... they were incredibly memorable and catchy songs. These songs were good, but not as memorable.
im not gonna lie, and im not racist but im extremely glad Disney changes the main characters race - Mulan (Asian), this movie (Black), and other movies as American
I don't agree with this movie not having any memorable songs o: I can't speak for the others but after coming out of the theatre and ever since I've been singing '' Friends on the other side '' and '' When we're human '' a lot :D !!!!
Great review. Hearing it would be Randy Newman providing the songs I was a bit wary...I'm glad I've found someone who honestly critiqued the movie. I'm looking forward to seeing this knowing the animation and music won't be on the same level as the Disney Renaissance but will probably still be pretty damn good.
I half agree about the songs, but I really liked Dr Faciliar's song, in fact I think it's the greatest disney villain song yet, and When were human was awesome too. But yeah, most of them weren't that catchy.
I loved this movie and I agree with you up until the memorable songs portion. Walking out of the theature I had the song Friends on the Other Side by Keith David and Down in New Orleans (Finale) by Anika Noni Rose Stuck in my head. Disney brought it back, hopefuly they don't abonden this beautiful gift again.

No bad intention but The review is too monotonous, no variation of pitch or volume and so very sleep inducing... much improvement needed....if this is done by AVGN anthony i dont even beleive it how can such brilliant reviewer does so boring review with this one...
I liked the movie a lot too. Facilier was slightly more cowardly then many Disney villains, but seriously, he had one of the coolest songs in the whole movie and the way he manipulated shadows was just awesome.
Though I kind of agree that Ray and Louis could have been left out while leaving the story intact, I still adore them both, and am really happy they are a part of the story. Ray gave an important extension of the focus on the evening star too. I thought he was adorable.
Another great review. I personally loved this movie and totally agree that the shadow man is a great villain. My favorite character has to be Louis, the alligator, mostly because I am a trumpet player too lol.
THIS was based on the frog princess by e.d. baker? this is horrible!!! The book is way better than this stupid movie!!!!

I disagree with the 'non-memerable songs'; I love them all! I've been singing "Gonna Take You There" for the past week.

1) The animation was beautiful!!! Disney really delivered there.
2) The songs were catchy, when I left i had dig a little deeper stuck in my head...
