My teacher has me learning this form. I'm having a lot of trouble with the strikes where you hold your wrist and bring the back foot straight back (see 2:24). I just can't seem to understand where the force is coming from so my punches lack force. For me this applies to any punch where you're on one leg, but especially here.
If anyone can edify me, I'd really appreciate it.
It's one of those things where I can execute the move, but don't
@JimNitti it's actually part of the move involving the following kick as well, called 右式閉門腿 (you shi bi men tui). luckily for you those aren't punches, they're diao shou (刁手) which look similar to gou shou (the mantis grabby grabby hands). you can fling both of your hands out forward as you kick your left foot back and then, as if grabbing/clawing something, pull them back to your chest, at which point you execute the kick with your right foot.

@katsura1982 Thank you, my friend. That makes it much more clear for me. It was very nice of you to reply to my confusion.

Is this a 7-Star Mantis set or from another system?
WingChunGeologist 2 years ago
7 Star Mantis, but from a rarer lineage, called Longfist Mantis by Gao Daosheng.

Because any mantis style can incorporate other styles/ systems movements...it's all about the preferences of the form's creator.

It is 7* Mantis but from the same lineage as Gao Daosheng, also known as Longfist Mantis.

It looks very well

Which style of mantis is this? It doesn't appear to be 7-star's 'Chu Dong'. Nevertheless, great production values except for the sound effects :)

Good footing on what looks like a slippery deck.

That AND his focus/ intensity alternates with gentle, smooth transitions. All that and he does it very quickly, making it look effortless...
