  • FM to me is the middle ground between UK and Rush... that to me is a great musical place to be in!

  • I like Nash's solo version better.

  • Does anyone know if FM often performed without drummer Martin Deller, or was his absence just a one-off situation here? This is good, but would've preferred that it included real drums.

  • looks like geddy lee you can see how rush was influenced by em

  • @fizzbin1

    Because of his looks? ...please...LMAO

  • I love this early FM best! Nash was a big influence. I like all he does but his instrumental stuff really got to me.

  • just look at 8:29...like i said..that's Nash 1000%

  • thats 1000% Nash the Slash...JUST SO YOU KNOW

  • All I know is Nash (FM) Slash can play every stringed instrument with perfection and make it look easy and fun!!

  • You only need to listen to know that that IS Nash.

  • Let's clear up the confusion, shall we?

  • @kuujjuaq58 ...there is no "confusion"..thats Nash the Slash

  • Ben Mink, of K.D.Lang fame did drum for F.M.

  • @TheSpinalzap

Sorry bud, Ben Mink played electric mandolin for FM, not drums. Martin Deller was the drummer.

  • You of course are correct...no idea why I typed KT Lang....D'OH!

  • That IS in fact NASH THE SLASH on Mandolin

Their first album featured a pic of him without bandages (but in tux and top hat).

Ben Mink replaced Nash and went on to play with and produce KT Lang.

  • @KRS61 That's K(atherine) D(awn) Lang. Ben's first band opened for LedZeppelin in TO just after LZ was "created". and now is well known in the EU & LA for soundtrack work.

  • my first show was fm opening for rush moving pictures tour 1980 ben mink had replaced nash the slash they wer spectacular!!! disregard everything after city of fear

  • @unstabledavid Nobody replaced Nash!

  • @TheSpinalzap are you speaking metaphorically? because it was ben mink playing on survailence and city of fear and who i saw on stage at the aud in buffalo in 80...i do have a re-union cd with nash the slash that was pretty good...that was from the late 90s...

  • @unstabledavid I owe many apologies. My memories are clogged!

    This from the Wiki thingy:

"Hawkins / Mink / Deller lineup

Before the end of 1977, Nash was replaced by Ben Mink, ex Stringband and Murray McLaughlin's Silver Tractors, who also played electric violin and electric mandolin. Ben has also collaborated with Mendelson Joe and k.d. lang.

... Ben Mink left FM in 1983."

I am eating my hat, a silver topper, of course!

  • @TheSpinalzap

I was wrong, but Nash came back. Sorry for the mis-information.

I blame it on environmental influences. Snicker.

  • FM was an awesome act live

  • Ya, this is the TVO performance. If you look closely they have the same outfits on.

    Now that's talent...totally awesome.

  • Nash is not wearing face bandages here

  • @vischkers that's because that is not nash the slash...it's Martin Deller, the original mandolin player

  • @bsharpinLondon Martin dellar is the / was the drummer and thT is nash on the mandolin.

  • @bsharpinLondon ..thats nash ...Martin Deller is/was the drummer

  • Hey where does this band mostly hail from.

  • @unnim ...They were (and are) from Toronto, Ontario Canada.

  • this looks like the TVO taping - see Phasers On Stun video with intro

  • Is this the TVO performance?

  • absolutely LOVE the trippy video effect during the climatic final section of this video. The producers really got their music, it seems. Shame that Martin Deller (?) wasn't part of this excellent taping! And I agree with @Chorddual1's comment.

  • @mopacmedia I don't think Martin Deller was in the band at the time this was made.

  • Shapes of Things was done originally by The Yard birds but I like FM's sci-fi version of it. It's on Surveillance (1979-80hard to find)This band was great, too bad they were coming out with this great music at a time when disco and new wave were in the spotlight.

  • Anyone got a link to their version of the The Kinks "Shapes"?

  • Yeah its up again! Thanks a lot!

  • I love that old drum machine!!!! Look at that chunky keyboard! YES
