Aerith is an Ancient the last one, although sephiroth is part Ancient due to his mother (Jenova) Being a ancient aswell.

Seph Kills her cause she was the only one able to stop meteor, But with her in the way sephiroth wouldn't be able to summon it, thus killing her.
