i agree with drug testing and I think that you should have to bring in rejection slips from jobs you have applied for and not gotten to continue to receive the benefit. You would have to state a quota like 10 a month since there's about 20 working days in a month that gives you two days to at least apply for a job each working day. I also do not think that people should be able to have more children while on welfare. Govt says first ones on us and then no more money for additional kids...
It could be two things - women get fat because they no longer feel the need to strive toward physical perfection (since they already landed a man) OR living with men is just so stressful that women can't help but gain weight! =P
I think that the welfare has been very much destroyed and now when people need help for their family there will be nothing. I would make sure that those who are requesting welfare have a background check, how long they have not been employed. What was their last job and how long where they there as well as when they don't have that job any more. After at, they have to make a plan to get a part-time job or full time within 6 month or no more then a year. And thats even pushing it.
As for the drug testing to receive welfare I completely agree that it should be enforced. My father who works 70 miles away from home and only gets to see me for 6 months out of the year because of that job or any other father/ mother that has to take a drug test to work and has to pay taxes on their hard earned money it should apply to those that don't work for it. it is only fare and just that the same criteria is met for that money for the person that works for it and those that receive it.

I stumbled upon a report recently that said that the amounts of drug-addicts receiving welfare is a small minority and screening with drug tests hardly helped decrease the amount of people on welfare. I think it might have been from a trial in Florida. But yeah, drug tests are a waste of money in this case. People in have a major misconception of who actually is on welfare.

I live in michigna, and recently and the end of 2010, they revoked food stamps for students if they were not working at least 20 hours. At the time my job would only give me MAYBE 15 hours a week, and my roommate had been laid off, both of us going to college full-time. When this happened and they basically took away the only means we had to eat, it was like a kick in the face "don't try to better yourself, but if you quit school, we'll give you your food stams back"

QOTD: I was brought up on welfare in the UK and speak from personal experience. I totally agree with everything Phil said about drug testing but this this should extend to tobacco and alcohol. I saw way too much of our family money spent on "luxuries" while I had to pick up change dropped on the floor by idiots to buy school uniform, tampons, face wash et cetera. My idea would be to pay welfare as a wage in exchange for the claimant being out of the house and involved in community projects.

I've heard many stories from actual struggling families who do not get approved for help because they "apparently make too much money." ... hiring someone to do the drug tests would just make the government bigger. Making it bigger means that it will have more power and that's exactly what they don't want to do. @lmanzo77 Well I'm from Australia and while I'm not saying we're number one, it seems to work ok and no Australian complains about either the healthcare or welfare system. We have free healthcare for everyone, which really helped me when I was a student and when I was starting a company. Our healthcare is also cheaper on the taxpayer per capita because we don't have private companies taking a cut. We also have government loans for higher education and a reasonably thrifty welfare system.

If you require drug tests for welfare you're eliminating most people from the list who need welfare the most. People in shitty situations often suffer mentally. I've lived in poverty my entire life & rarely am I on welfare. (From library computer.) I've been homeless, starving, diseased- I'm 19, from a US 8-person-family. I dream of going to college, but was dismissed b/c of disease. I see other impoverished people poorly representing our class & find it incredibly unfair. I work hard, but can't make ends meet. If we could monitor how aid was spent, contact interviewers, and drug test, great, but it's hard to do this w/out being considered totalitarian.

QOTD: I was brought up on welfare in the UK and speak from personal experience. I totally agree with everything Phil said about drug testing but this this should extend to tobacco and alcohol. I saw way too much of our family money spent on "luxuries" while I had to pick up change dropped on the floor by idiots to buy school uniform, tampons, face wash et cetera. My idea would be to pay welfare as a wage in exchange for the claimant being out of the house and involved in community projects.

I seriously couldn't agree more with you on the welfare subject. It's quite ridiculous because there are so many people out there abusing it. I've heard many stories from actual struggling families who do not get approved for help because they "apparently make too much money." Well does that mean you have to sit on your butt all day and do nothing in order to get a little help. There is just too much I would like to say on this subject. It makes me sick.

In Denmark they found that when they cut welfare from 4 years to 2 years, people found work in under 2 years...imagine that....they found that most of the long term unemployment was due to people seeking only jobs they liked rather than all available jobs
That being said, I think welfare should be somewhere around 2-6 months.

Lets spend money (that we don't have, that's right, don't mind the debt ceiling being raised for the thousandth time because our debt is perpetually growing) so that way instead of giving the guy who deserves it during one of the worst recessions in American history $200 a week, lets subtract the cost of the test, administrating the test and lab fees. They need to keep everything balanced. The government can't fix a lot of things that seem so simple to fix because they would have to hire more people. Hiring more people=bigger government. @lmanzo77 Well I'm from Australia and while I'm not saying we're number one, it seems to work ok and no Australian complains about either the healthcare or welfare system. We have free healthcare for everyone, which really helped me when I was a student and when I was starting a company. Our healthcare is also cheaper on the taxpayer per capita because we don't have private companies taking a cut. We also have government loans for higher education and a reasonably thrifty welfare system.

If you require drug tests for welfare you're eliminating most people from the list who need welfare the most. People in shitty situations often suffer mentally. People suffering mentally, especially poor ones, often rely on illegal drugs. Sometimes this is good, usually it's bad, but they're kinda forced into that position. (by sometimes good i mean in some cases they're lucky and it can work safely as a medicine)

I've lived in poverty my entire life & rarely am I on welfare. (From library computer.) I've been homeless, starving, diseased- I'm 19, from a US 8-person-family. I dream of going to college, but was dismissed b/c of disease. I see other impoverished people poorly representing our class & find it incredibly unfair. I work hard, but can't make ends meet. If we could monitor how aid was spent, contact interviewers, and drug test, great, but it's hard to do this w/out being considered totalitarian.

Something that might help is to make the people who accept welfare money is to make them volunteer in their community. There should be some sort of tracking system so if they don't show up they don't get paid.
