I used to be afraid of needles, but now I am afraid of dying before I establish a legacy. A legacy in the form of having good children, being remembered in a positive way by people I have met, doing something professional of great value, something like that. All of those would be nice. I already try to be as good to the people I interact with as I can, and I believe I will have children in the future, and I may yet do something truely great. But really, I just want to be remembered fondly.
Looking back on my life and thinking: I never did any of the things I shouldve, wouldve, couldve. Biggest hope: End of religion.....oh yeah and Norah Jones as my personal slave.
i wasn't dead, i simply "wasn't", which made me unconcious of my own being and so now that i know i exist the thought of not existing scares me, because everything is still possible as long as i exist.
of course death is "natural" or normal, but that doesn't add anything against my point
You only exist in a conventional sense, when it comes down to it you have no inherent self. No soul/spirit or whatever you want to call it, the Earth is one big organism and we are all connected. It might sound a bit new-age but it is true.
just as true as saying that i do exist because i want to, and what does the spirit have to do with it? i just talk about consciousness, ye old i think therefore i am. in fact we are all connected (one way or the other but again that leads us to another theme). now let me rephrase. i am not scare of not being... but of not being conscious of my existence. which in my case is just the same.
and jsut as a side note, check out all the people on this video and notice that most of their fears come down to their existence and people aknoledge of such existence, or stuff that might be life (self consciousness) threatening
I suppose the secret is to use death as the ultimate motivation to live a full and happy life, you never know when it will be taken away, it could happen while your reading this. As for I think therefore I am, what happens if you're not thinking do you cease to exist?
i don't know about the first statement, death never seems to motivate me much, there's three things you can do on the presence of fear, run, fight, or stay put (paralized),i guess first one's the healthiest second one the riskiest and third one the dumbest. which one do you assume?
about the "think therefore i am" question. if i cease to aknowledge my existence it'd be the same as not existing at least from my stand point of view. wether or not other people aknowledge it.
Re.tommrod - I think you should fight the fear of death by realising it is a natural certainty, what you should fear is regretting that you didn't live a full life when you're on your deathbed. I wasn't saying you don't exist, just that you don't have a fixed self, are you really exactly the same person you were yesterday? You're happiness does not depend on external conditions, just your attitude to them.
Hmm... What's the point of focusing entirely on disgusting emotions such as fear and guilt? Owning these emotions leads to self-loathing. It seems like a lot of these people care too much about what other people think about them, as if their happiness depended solely on the opinions of others. This video is a rather terrible display of man.
