The running thing can be abused. Hold shift and press alt, then click on the edge of the minecraft window and you have shift on until you press shift again. You can do the same for jumping and moving forward.

When you where running out of no where, you probably where walking forward and pressed the button to open your inventory, when you closed it you kept walking forward, I do it sometimes to, lol!

when you had a fit running around in circles it was probably because your key got 'stuck', sorta like the computer didn't recognise that you let go of the button so you just kept runnin' round like a madman. Happened to me loads before.
