I liked how his movies had deeper meanings rather than just shock value. Not to say his films like Blue Velvet wasn't shocking. But you can watch something like CSI and it's nothing but shock value with cliche' villains. Whereas David Lynch can take villains and ad special unique qualities and twists. Also he's great with symbolism. There are too many TV shows and movies these days in which there is seemly random imagery and symbols that don't actually represent anything other than aesthetics.
The comments on here are funny. A woman has a different opinion and everyone becomes cruel and superior to her. If you act like this to people who simply do not agree with you, you are missing the best points of Lynch's style, namely his grace and humanity. You are also the reason why everything has become so safe and bland. If you don't like a news anchor having an opinion go watch Jay Leno, he wont offend any of you. :-)
I love the way David responds to this lady's ignorance and her overemotional, often aggressive displays. He has a deep understanding of and such confidence in his vision/ideas/work that he is able to give solid, intelligent responses.
You can see that he takes pleasure in achieving in her what he set out the do with Dennis' character. Interviewer: "Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet plays the creepiest creep I have ever seen in my life. He's absolutely horrifying!". David (smiling): "Yes he does..."
What sort of dumb ass question is "Do you think you're a genius or a really sick person?" Why give him 2 ridiculous and extreme choices? It's like asking do you love all dogs, or murder every dog you see?
Thank you for posting, David is an amazing artist, I wonder why people think he degraded Rosellini? did these guys even watched the movie? David tackled so many different subjects, crime, youth, sex, fetish, voyeurism and love all natural to humans.
@JaxHad A lot of reporters and networks didn't know how to approach a creative genius like David Lynch. I think also that the USA loves it's spoon fed ideals of what is edgy or not. In Europe and other places they have a better understanding of someone like him. Not to say he didn't bridge that gap in the US. He was a very surreal artist that was able to mix high ideals with cliche' Americana. I guess being born in the US helped bridge that gap. He was miles ahead of other American Artists.

This is way before Lynch figured out how to respond eloquently to idiotic press questions.

You have to put the politics of the 1980s into perspective here. He's kinda lucky they didn't ban his films back then...

If she was terrified by Blue Velvet, her eyes must have popped out when she saw Fire Walk With Me or Mulholland Drive.
