Lions always like to go for the healthiest yet the weakest, The calf in this case.

The reason they give up so easily is because

a) The buffalo is ready to give up its life to protect the calf and will do whatever in its power.

b) The lions get this message, they'd do the same. But for them its just another meal and they are not ready to sustain any injuries which may hinder them from future opportunities to hunt from such a large group of buffalo. Giving up was logical and good tact.

Really astonishing. You'd think that 4 lions could take BOTH easily, but...maybe these were inexperienced, young lions? Also, because of the compression of distance when a lens is zoomed out, you can't really tell how close objects are to one another, so the lions may be much further from the buffalo's calf than they seem.
