Thanks for the beautiful write-up & translation,Cathy. My channel is the history of a century of worldwide music. When uploaders don't give much info,I try to add a little. The music biz is so serendipitous,it boggles my mind. My current feature is one of 110 tracks cut by Stu Phillips as The Hollyridge Strings. & only came about because his home label Colpix refused to let him produce any music but left him free to produce for others. It's a crazy biz! Thx again for all you put into this! chuck
@chkjns Thank you for the honour of your kind words that commemorate Kyu Sakamoto and perhaps his most treasured of songs ever to be released world wide. Such a rare talent and moving song,
@wiredeweirde You either use Google Translate or are just messing with us, because quite frankly cathytreks's translation is one of the best I've seen. Oh, and by the way, 私は日本で生まれ、アメリカに永住してからも日本語を勉強しつづけたので、日本語は高校生なみにできます。くやしかったら日本語で言い返してごらんなさい。
Recently, this melody and this artist's voice kept repeating in my head since the awful news coming out of Japan. I head this song when I was very young, on the radio in the dad's car. I looked it up on google...found this site...what an interesting story behind the song, the artist singing it...and the lyrics are so beautiful. Probably, one of the most beautiful songs ever played on American radio...a long time ago.
My first trip to Japan in 1985 ~ my American friends there took me to a Karoke Bar and the only song they knew how to sing ... can you imagine back in the day with this song #1 on the USA charts and no one knew what he was singing about but the song was so catchy ... I salute you Kyu.
ces quoi sont opinions sur les missiles nucléaires,je croit que ces excellent et le japon aurait due etre rayée de la carte,ce chanteur est plate-ultra-plate,ennuyant
Look at his timing, his commitment to every syllable is mind blowing; if you understand the Japanese Language you will understand how perfect his singing really is. I em envious. Truly one of the great masters. It is unfortunate the western world will probably never really get it. I love you Kyu-chan.
I absolutely wore out two 45rpm records of this as a twelve and thirteen year old when it became popular in the States. When I first heard it I thought it was so sad even though I didn't know what the lyrics meant then. I heard that Sakamoto Kyu was a very good man and I mourned when he died. Thanks for posting this and the lyrics agin, which I'd lost in a hard drive crash. I've never before seen him perform.
Thanks kathtreks for these,it's one of the very best songs ,sensitive and universal.Seeing translated lyrics was no surprise by what the song conveyed in Japanese.Yet the poignant sadness is expressed with a beauty that lets us really embrance the full dimensions of life and loves. Sakamoto is unique and an unbelievable loss. Untill now I'd never seen his performance.
Was he the whistler in the song?

Even though it is a sad song, it has a hypnotic and soft melody that is so alluring. It is no wonder that this is a universal famous song.

I see what you mean. : ) He was committed to his singing even though it may not seem that way when he was a goofball.

Ue O Muite Aruku is a great song.
Ash'ta ga Aru is a great song too.
Thank you for posting the extra information regarding Sakamoto Kyu.
I grew up in Scotland hearing "Ue O muite Ariku/Sukiyaki" on the radio - I have always loved this song.
My Japanese friends taught me the words.
