LukeLovesRose : I forgot about Deep Star Six and Leviathan. I suppose they could have affected the success of The Abyss. The Abyss is a far better movie than the two of them combined. I still think it's James Cameron's best movie.
Did this movie left an impression on you when you saw it in theaters as a kid too? well it did bombed in theaters despite good reviews, i think it's the 2001 of the 80s ain't i right?
@Johnlindsey289 Yeah, i was truly amazed by this movie when i saw it in theaters as a kid and i thought the special effects were some of the coolest i had ever seen up to that point. I could never understand why this movie bombed at the box office because it was critically acclaimed and you would have thought that audiences would be dying to see the next Cameron film after the awesome success of The Terminator and Aliens. Um, wasn't 2010 the 2001 of the 80's? Nah, just kidding, and you're right.
I heard Ed Harris in an interview....he didn't get along with Cameron when filming this flick. The part where he saves his wife from drowning was taken about 40 times and Ed Harris snapped
The Special Edition of The Abyss is a masterpiece. If anyone is really interested in the career and brilliance of James Cameron, they have to check out The Abyss: Special Edition.
It's not as action-packed as people expect, but it's intense, raw, powerful, dramatic and captivating. It's really Cameron's character study film. It's Cameron's Martin Scorsese picture you might say.
Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth are fantastic. Oscar-worthy performances if you ask me.
I agree! I own it as well. The Special Edition is a HUGE improvement over the original, and the Under Pressure doc was incredible. Truly makes me appreciate one of the most difficult films shoots ever.
I think it's more on a Kubrick scale than Scorsese since it's the 2001 for the 80's! the extended cut is far superior to the theatrical cut in every way and one of the most unique Sci-fi movies of the 80's.
Did you ever saw this in theaters like i did as a kid? if not then you don't know what it was like experiencing this masterpiece on the big screen. It was a true experience that made me awe and ooed at every detail.
For WorleyClarence: Close Encounters of the Third Kind is my most favorite. The scene in the Abyss where they put the rat in the breathing fluid is not faked. It's real. We've had that technology since the early 1980's.
It's hard to belive that it has been twenty years since this movie came out. I think it is one of the greatest movies ever made. It's my number two all time favorite movie.
I can't understand why this movie was basically a flop at the box office. I think it is one of the greatest movies ever made. I think it's James Cameron's best movie, even better than the Titanic.
And the box office doesn't mean anything ! bad films are great success , like Resident Evil and Transformers ( all michael bay's fiilms ) and so many more... Look at Raging Bull , who was a big flop at the time , a Masterpiece who will stay in Cinema History , Scarface too , back in 1983 , John Carpenter's The Thing and so on ...
Conan the Barbarian never seemed to be too succesfull at first either but later became a masterpiece of its genre...of course...u have to like that world...
I think Abyss is brilliant! In my opinion better, more intense, more original, and more amazing than AVATAR...but thats my opinion...
I think it did make a lot of profit 20 milion and didn`t make more profit because of how high the budget was I mean 90 milion for that time for such a film is a lot, it made more then The Terminator, it was great just not good enough to break into the giga blokbuster era, which is very hard to break trough, I think the directors cut would have done better but still it would be like 110 milion like Aliens at most. Also a dozen milion profit is enough which Raging Bull had, it is the kind of film.
Better than Titanic? I don't know about that. But, The Abyss deserved better recognition. Now that Cameron is making more and more popular films, hopefully more and more will see this underrated masterpiece.
Better than Titanic? I don't know about that, but you're right. It's impossible to think that this movie didn't earn much at all. It's a wonderful masterpiece. I mean, you can see why I think Bud and Lindsey are Harris and Mastrantonio's finest characters just by watching this trailer.
But, we can thank Leviathan and Deep Star Six for ruining the reputation of The Abyss before it had a chance to swim, so to speak..
@LukeLovesRose Hey you are that huge Cameron fan right???? I dion1t mind that of you or Kaywildcat, ib fact I totally respec it, I just hate how you and Kay continuesly need to be mean towards me just for being a Lucas fan, and having a different opinion. Oh and The Titanic`s drams was hit and miss in my opinion, because I thought th lovestory hadsome prettyforced but also just grosd momets like Ross and Jack spitting over the rail but also how overdramatic they were about Rose using the axe.
@StephenB58 It was well a box office dispointment no flop, but because the film was originally intended as and therefore marketed distributed and released as a 40 milion dollar film for which 90 milion would be great, but the production budget ended up getting bigger without the duistribution and marketing and release being improved accordingly and without an attempt to put it more in the ream of over 100 milion dollar films. I mean it made more then Terminator and not much less then Aliens.....
@StephenB58 anything is better than Titanic.for me Titanic is a chick flick with good special effects.if there wasn t any love story i bet anything that it would have flopped
You've probably found out already, but the music is from the soundtrack to Chronos by Michael Stearns. I was lucky to find a copy at a record/CD fair a few months ago. Look around on ebay or Amazon tho, theres sometimes people selling it 2nd hand.
The scene where they submerge the rat in the breathing fluid is not faked. The rat really did breathe that fluid. They've had that technology since the early 1980's, or before. You breathe a fluid in your lungs. The rat survived.
An absolutely amazing film, and one of the greatest trailers ever too - it was edited by Cameron himself when 20th Century Fox's marketing department couldn't come up with a suitable trailer.

I don't know if The Abyss was really the same kind of masterpiece as 2001. But, I think it's right up there.
And, what's funny is that Cameron set out to make a 2001 based underwater. Since he pulled it off, that says a lot.
LukeLovesRose 1 year ago
@LukeLovesRose Yeah, it's sort of an underwater cross between 2001 and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

WHERE is the HD version or a better DVD version, Mr. Cameron?
Avatar sucks! We do NOT need a part 2 of this crappy movie!
I want The Abyss on BD!
