I am from Northern Michigan, where exists no spectators to a wild fire. Every car stopped by a fire is emptied out and everyone given a mask and a shovel. Having fought two fires, I have nothing but respect for fire fighters and jumpers. Fred Jack
This is super! I'm sending it onto the Museum of Mountain Flying at the airport as they have a large smokejumper display and the DC-3 that dropped the smoke jumpers into Mann Gulch that day. I've never hiked up to the 13 crosses, but have fished the river several times at the landing.
Takes me back to those feelings, to men I've jumped with, day and night. Some are gone now, some are still here. I've passed this on to them. There is a place some where we will all meet again, we will all listen to songs like this and more. We will drink and toast the times and remember together.
I have been a wildland firefighter for fourteen years and have visited many of the fatality sites through out the west. However, standing in Mann Gulch truly hit me the hardest. There is so much that can be learned from the fatality sites that all fire fighters should really try to visit them. A beautiful tribute that song always makes me teary
This is a timeless song, it should touch you where you live! I've walked this haloed ground, the feelings and emotions were and still are overpowering. OUTSTANDING version, very well put together. To those still in Fire Service Be Safe and God Bless. Signed a Old Ashkicker

This breaks my heart. Thank you for all the pictures. "Young Men and Fire" is one of my favorite books, and this video and song evoke such sadness and loss. Despite the distance of years and lives, I am affected by this story, of brave and strong youth gone too soon. I would like to visit Mann Gulch and pay my respects.
A great tribute. Written by Canadian James Keelaghan. I haven't been able to find him doing on the 'Net, but another very moving version is done by Jane Leche and the Fiddlin Foresters. Google Mann Gulch Fire Tribute. Very, very good. She sounds a lot like Joan Baez.
I have tried to sing this numerous times but never succeeded. I get a lump in my throat and cant continue. Richard Shindell does my favourite version. Respect to the guys that do this work. .
Tom "tj" marovich answered his last alarm on 7-21-09 on a USFS chopper and he and all of the others who have fallen before him and after him will never be forgoten, all are created equal but only a few answer the calling to become a fire men RIP my fallen brother
I have been a smokejumper out of Missoula for 20 years. Being Macho bastards, this song makes me cry. Go figure. I have had 4 jumper bro's die in that time. Done Mackey, Walt Smith, Ken Hair. I hope I never see anymore.
I am a wildland firefighter and I just wanted to thank you for making this video it's a beautiful tribute with a wonderful song, full of lessons we should never forget. Thank you for helping insure these men and what they did are never forgotten.
oh sad but beautiful song on this tragedy thanks barb for putting this up and excuse my ignorance but the term smoke jumpers is new to me , do they actually jump into the fires to put them out .
Yes, they jump out of planes into forest fires. At 2:18, 2:32 and 2:45 you can see some shots of them coming out of the planes or near the ground. Often, the fire locations are too isolated to get to any other way in a hurry. Awesome, huh?

By far the best musical performance, in terms of arrangement, and a wonderful video, too. Nice work.
