The power steering fluid reservoir in our van overflows from time to time, however when it's cold it appears to be filled to the right level -- which is odd considering some is very obviously leaking out around the cap. Would that be the pump or is the pressure hose blocked? Is there an easy way to test that? Thanks!
@MikeTheITGuy only way you can test em is with a power steering pressure testing kit, they cost a ton. Hoses are cheap aftermarket, I'd try that first.
@scottykilmer At $20 for the pressure hose and $41 for a new pump, I'm thinking of just replacing both considering they're >10 years old now. Thanks as always for the response.
@fordwindsor351 what's in a name. the tensioner pulley is the one, but really, it's an idler pulley too. you just use the one that moves, one will move back and forth, the other won't.
@scottykilmer OK, was just checking, just from what you said in your video i was little off for on my 98 Expedition, the idler and tensioner are two different parts. Thanks and take care.
@Scotty Kilmer , Hey I drive a Saturn Ion and my car has an electric power steering(no fluid). Would replacing it be pretty much the same process i.e. removing the pulley and assembly, then reverse for installation?
@Thecarguy1254 Toyoda is writing in 3 stroke. Toyota is writing in 8 stroke. in Japanese, 8 stroke writing bring good luck. something like that. Asian are very superstitious.

hi scotty, thanks for all your videos, hey i have a 2002 dodge grand caravan , im all ready change the rack and pinion, and power steering fluid, the steering wheel is moving free now, ther is nothing rough or hard to move, but still a noise when you move the steering wheel, , can be the pump?maibe?thanks, and keep up the good work
Hey Scotty. If you don't mind, what's the name of your shop in Houston? I think I might swing by for a second opinion as I seem to trust you more than most mechanics today. Thanks, and your videos are great!
Scotty, the steering pump on my 2005 Honda Civic seems to be making a whining noise that gets louder with increasing revs. Steering is sometimes fine but gets hard under braking. There are also air bubbles in the reservoir (is this normal?). Once earlier, the belt that drives the pump actually came off and I used a roadside mechanic to put it back on. Do you think it is the belt making the noise or the steering pump?
@scottykilmer Just thought I'd give you feedback. I didn't do anything to the belt as that seemed fine, but I changed the fluid in the pump as that seemed black. And the whining is greatly reduced. It is only audible at full lock now, which means it's probably a bad pump. The power assist works fine for now, so I guess I use it till it fails completely?
scotty... when i turn the steering wheel to take a corner the steering wheel doesnt straighten itself after the corner... i have to straighten it myself everytime... does this has anything to do with the pump or is it the rack?
My mom asked me to look at her car cause it started making a low humming sound and it stops when I turn the wheel. Do you think it could be a power steering pump?
scotty. Im fixin to replace a ps pump on a 85 Silvarado equiped with Hydroboost. Have always been told you got to purge all the air out of the system by turning the wheel from lock to lock after you got the new pump in and full of fluid. bub you did not do that on the cadalack. is this only teue on the older stuff??
hey scotty, I own a 2010 mazda 5(wagon) I purchase it new in dec 2009, it has 23500 miles.. lately I heard a humming noise comming when I turn the steering wheel.. could it be that the pump needs to be replace? thank you!!
Hey scotty, I have civic 2002 and i change the power steering belt and it sill squeaking. I check the fuild and it look good, but could be the pump going out bad?? What doyou think??
Good video however you should mention what vehicle you are working on prior to disassemblly so we can better get a handle & find out bearings...pun intended.
From ErictheCarGuy forum, it's better to spend money on Taiwan tools. If they break, buy another one. American's the greatest country on earth, but they tools are priced too high.
@hom2fu American tools are expensive...but at times, they are definitely made to a higher quality.
My Chinese made tools I purchased at Pep Boys lasted about 2 weeks at the shop. My 10mm sockets soon because 10.5 and 11mm after heavy use. Your best bet is to buy tools with lifetime warranties. Sears's Craftsman series tools are excellent, well priced, and last quite awhile. If you break it, just hand it back, and you'll get a new one.
those press on power steering is a bitch (hard) to install. who come up with press on method should die. because you must remove the pulley first to access to the bolt.
@hom2fu I agree, cheap engineers just making em junkier and junkier, use to have 4 bolts holding em on, but hey, those bolts cost BIG money and leaving em off saves all those pennies. Strangely enough, they're not giving the cars away though. scotty
@solonictoyota9186 most tools are made in china anyway these days. I just go to auto zone when my old ones break and get their top end tools with lifetime warranties. They break, I get new ones free and they're two blocks away. Scotty
Note after driving for a few mins or just turning the wheels in your drive way you're going to want to check the level again and add fluid if needed because of fluid in the lines ect.
Scotty I have a 96 sonoma 2.2 that keeps overheating. I have replace the radiator, fan clutch, and temp sensor but it didnt seem to help. The check engine light code said that there was a miss fire on cylinder 2. Could that cause the engine to overheat? Previouse owner replaced water pump.
@itavio misfires can cause overheating, but overheating more often causes misfiring. Watch my video "How to fix an overheating car" and try all that. Scotty
my uncle has a toyota corolla 1989 model car. It has a carburetor type engine, I have just replaced the alternator because it shorted (smoke came out of the hood from the alternator itself), when my uncle tried to turn the keys to "on" position w/o starting the car. The car won't start but it cranks good. Fuel pumps working good also. The horn has good power and sound. I've seen mechanics pour small amount of gas onto the carb suction area. Would you post a video on this? If not, any suggestion?
scotty my Daewoo had a option for foglights but i dont have them and i looked i dont even have the harness i have a fog light indicator in the cluster but no fog light switch is it possible i can get factory fog lights, a wireing harness and factory fog light switch and a factory foglight relay and wire it up to the fuse box in the car and pretty much install OE Foglights and switch with a aftermarkert harness will this work?
@scottykilmer well it took me 90 mins to do it but the impala has a set screw to adjust and its not easy they still arent in perfect alignment but alot better
How convenient, the past month, you've covered the two things wrong with my car...master cylinder, and power steering pump. You want to cover how to adjust the e-brake next? In my '87 Corolla, the adjuster at the handle is already as much as it can go.
@mariofreak91 you either need new brake shoes in the rear, or the cables have stretched and need replacing. watch my video "replacing brake shoes on your car" first. Scotty
in bleeding the power steering,do you need to raise the vehicle and then turn the steering wheel lock to lock? or you can bleed it without raising the vehicle?
@wangbungal you might be able to get away with just leaving the cap off and turn the wheel all the way right and left few times. Have someone to add fluid if needed while you do that. Breaking the lines loose is what makes the air get into the system. Never heard that jacking the car up is gonna help any.
@HussamStands actually jacking it up and turning it wheel to wheel does work on some cars, by removing the strain of vehicle weight on the system. Scotty
Scotty, when installing a new pump like this, is it reccomended to bleed the pump before starting the car up? ive heard youre supposed to turn the wheel back and forth with the engine off to bleed the pump then do it with the engine started/running
Hey Scotty, my powersteering moans a little when i steer when the car idles, just a little maoning, its a saab 9000 -95 there is fluid , no leaks and a new fanbelt on it too.
My 2005 Nissan 350z engine is a vq35de and lately it been knocking but not loud at all. I could hear it inside the car. It is not a tick but more a skip knock. What could it be? Please help!!!! Thank you in advance.
@UrbanGin Open the hood and listen to the engine, and then take the oil cap off and listen inside there. If you hear it inside the engine, Bad news, it's wearing out inside. People beat the heck out of those cars and the engines often break from that. Scotty
Thanks Scotty, but ever since owning it for 3 months now with 34,000 is when it start to happen. I changed my first oil change with fully synthetic 5w 30 is when I started to hear the knock. Could it be valves, piston slaps, or fuel damper? heard a lot of other 350z owners having problem with this issues and I hope I could really get it resolve. PLEASE HELP ME SCOTTY!. I brought to mechanics here in MASS. but none haven't got a clue to the noise but just assumption.
@UrbanGin Yes, could be any of those, but you'd have to take the engine apart to do valves or piston slap. Generally those occurs from over revving the engine. Scotty
@scottykilmer would bouncing off the rev limiter twice by accident in a GM 5.3 v8 cause a collapsed lifter? And after its fixed...could the problem come back after a year? or would it be a different one?
@scottykilmer over revving...um hmm cough...yes I did a little of those but I should stop it. How much would it cost at a repair shop because I do not have those type of tools to do it but just basic maintenance?
How would I go about flushing? My reservoir is separate and I drained that, put fresh in, but I can tell that the old stuff mixed with it I is there a way to drain the pump?
@bjretas nothing's really in the pump. Flushing is best by removing the return hose, putting it in a bucket with an extension hose, and pouring fluid into the reservoir, that way the old stuff goes in the bucket Scotty
leasing a car starts to look like the garden of EDEN !!!! let's dump all this junk and give them the electronics after 3 years,..not ours to keep ANYMORE ,...and God bless US !
Nice car Scotty! Is that your Boss 302? I am going to be getting a 2012 mustang GT soon, and can't wait to drive that 5.0! What's your opinion on the new 5.0?
Scotty my Ford Ranger sometimes won't set into park when you shift it to park. The result is the truck will sometimes roll and I have to use the parking break to make sure it stays. I looked on the transmission and it looks like the little lever may not be fully extending on the automatic transmission. Should I replace the shift cable or are they adjustable?
my volvos power steering is really hard to turn?? is that normal?? it is 20 years old but should it be easier to turn? its hard to turn the wheel with one hand. and it takes a lot more force than newer cars i have driven. and older cars!
Scotty, have you ever gotten so deep in a repair and were unable to finish because you were lost? If this has happened how did you finish it? This has happened to me and it took a high bill at a local garage to fix it.
@xxlkrustylxx it depends, but caddie work is always more expensive, cause I have to deal with the idiots at the Caddie dealer who took 3 tries to order the correct part. Scotty
@alh1007 Because it's easier that way. You could take the pump off with the pulley on, but then the bolts are harder to get off from no working room. Getting them back on is a lot easier. Scotty
3:07 ... You know what's missing.. the 3 hours of swearing as each step never works as easy as your videos make them out to... I wish I could change a steering pump in 3.5 minutes.. ;)
I would have loved to have a set of those crows feet wrenches last march when I had to replace the intake gasket on my 4.3L GMC Jimmy. The bolts to loosen the fuel lines sre right against the firewall. Could I get those wrenches at HFT?
@scottykilmer i've ran lucas fuel injector cleaner before but still no fix. maybe my IACvalve is bad? i got a code for load failure for my IAC or circuit failure and and also my cam sensor was bad. i replaced the sensor so far.
Hey my 2000 ford mustang, idles rough when it starts up from a cold start, and kinda wants to die right when i take off, but once i drive for a minute or two, it drive normal and fine. any ideas?
@MoneyMarcMes SNAP ON TOOLS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE BUT AT THE SAME TIME VERY STRONG,BUT WHY BUY THEM AND HAVE A CREDIT CARD BILL TO PAY ALL YOUR LIFE AND THE ECONOMY IS BAD ALREADY ALOT OF MECHANIC LOOSING THEIR JOBS AND SELLING OUT THEIR TOOLS VERY CHEAP IT MAKES NO SENSE JUST BUY SOME CHEAP DECENT TOOLS.
@MoneyMarcMes I use stuff I've gotten over the years. Snap On is just a rip off company now, overpriced and most of their stuff is now made in China too. Scotty
@scottykilmer most american car parts are made in china too. i work for jeep and 90 percent parts are made in china.. poor quality and fails at low millage.
I should add that when the van is hot, the fluid is literally over-filled all the way up to the cap.

Breaking the lines loose is what makes the air get into the system. Never heard that jacking the car up is gonna help any.
HussamStands 4 months ago
@HussamStands actually jacking it up and turning it wheel to wheel does work on some cars, by removing the strain of vehicle weight on the system. Scotty

Scotty, when installing a new pump like this, is it reccomended to bleed the pump before starting the car up? ive heard youre supposed to turn the wheel back and forth with the engine off to bleed the pump then do it with the engine started/running

Scotty,
My 2005 Nissan 350z engine is a vq35de and lately it been knocking but not loud at all. I could hear it inside the car. It is not a tick but more a skip knock. What could it be? Please help!!!! Thank you in advance.
UrbanGin 4 months ago
@UrbanGin Open the hood and listen to the engine, and then take the oil cap off and listen inside there. If you hear it inside the engine, Bad news, it's wearing out inside. People beat the heck out of those cars and the engines often break from that. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
@scottykilmer
UrbanGin 4 months ago
@UrbanGin Yes, could be any of those, but you'd have to take the engine apart to do valves or piston slap. Generally those occurs from over revving the engine. Scotty

@scottykilmer would bouncing off the rev limiter twice by accident in a GM 5.3 v8 cause a collapsed lifter? And after its fixed...could the problem come back after a year? or would it be a different one?
318Captain 4 months ago
@318Captain it could cause that or many OTHER THINGS. Stop doing it. Engine work is expensive.Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
@scottykilmer Hey now...it was an accident why it happened. i thought it could have been a possibility. Thanks.
318Captain 4 months ago
@scottykilmer over revving...um hmm cough...yes I did a little of those but I should stop it. How much would it cost at a repair shop because I do not have those type of tools to do it but just basic maintenance?
UrbanGin 4 months ago
How would I go about flushing? My reservoir is separate and I drained that, put fresh in, but I can tell that the old stuff mixed with it I is there a way to drain the pump?
bjretas 4 months ago
@bjretas nothing's really in the pump. Flushing is best by removing the return hose, putting it in a bucket with an extension hose, and pouring fluid into the reservoir, that way the old stuff goes in the bucket Scotty

wheres the pump in a 2001 Impala and do u need that tool to remove it?
Matthew55904 4 months ago
@Matthew55904 Yes, most GM systems use that same pulley, cheap press on, instead of bolt on. Pumps lower on yours, much harder to get off. Scotty

Scotty my Ford Ranger sometimes won't set into park when you shift it to park. The result is the truck will sometimes roll and I have to use the parking break to make sure it stays. I looked on the transmission and it looks like the little lever may not be fully extending on the automatic transmission. Should I replace the shift cable or are they adjustable?
moofushu 4 months ago
@moofushu try adjusting it and PRAY it's not inside the transmission where the parking prawl is wearing out. Scotty

my volvos power steering is really hard to turn?? is that normal?? it is 20 years old but should it be easier to turn? its hard to turn the wheel with one hand. and it takes a lot more force than newer cars i have driven. and older cars!
DaBossk 4 months ago
@DaBossk Not normal, but on something that old, try flushing the system out as I show in my other video "Fixing binding power steering. " Scotty

Scotty, have you ever gotten so deep in a repair and were unable to finish because you were lost? If this has happened how did you finish it? This has happened to me and it took a high bill at a local garage to fix it.

Why did you have to the pulley off to remove the pump, but put it back on before re installing it?
alh1007 4 months ago
@alh1007
*Take the pulley off
alh1007 4 months ago
@alh1007 Because it's easier that way. You could take the pump off with the pulley on, but then the bolts are harder to get off from no working room. Getting them back on is a lot easier. Scotty
