@sp00kyb00ts Actually, my comments had little to nothing to do with the actual movie itself, but rather with the snide/insulting remarks some people were making about stay-at-home moms; I was merely trying to make a point about feminism not being exclusive to working and/or childfree women. The fact that people were attacking being a SAHM just really struck a nerve - I never meant to insinuate that the SAHM lifestyle is for everyone, just that the choice itself is not a backlash to feminism.
@FunKCX It's a thriller because the Ira Levin novel, upon which it was based, was a thriller. There was some dark, insinuating humor in the book, but it was by no means broadly comedic. Director Frank Oz and screenwriter Paul Rudnick took a huge tonal liberty w/ the original source material.
@redeye007 Part of that, I feel, is because they lost the point when they cast a good looking man as the husband. The point of the story is that, even though the men themselves aren't keeping up their appearance, they want their women to look Playboy Perfect. Modern movies aren't as brave as they were in the 70s. Unless it's a guy like Sean Connery or Patrick Stewart, you'll never see a bald man cast as the husband of an attractive woman in a movie.
In 2003, there were 98,000 stay-at-home dads out of a total of 5.5 million stay-at-home parents. That is 40 years after women were able to enter the workforce in any significant numbers, time enough for 1 or 2 generations of women to make their choice. If SAH parenting was really a choice, it would be 2.25 million dads, not 98,000 -- which is roughly 2 percent of all dads out there.
its funny that u are offended by this because this is a horror about getting what you want and finding out that it goes terribly wrong and it is a satire to warn against but satire always seem to offend. There is nothing wrong with being a housewife but the bad side of the stereotype is what the book and the movies are warning about.
I was 9 in 75, just finished watching a Disney movie on a Saturday afternoon..kinda hung out in our theater seats for a while goofing off.. the place started filling in again, so, it was like ..all right.. were in it now..it was TSW showing...I watched, just entranced, it was cool to catch a free show under age, but it was also a really fascinating movie.. young enough that my cynicism hadn't set in yet,and fairly impressionable...the good old days
Pretty good film. Very disturbing and an interesting product of the time (ie backlash against the women's lib movement) in which it was made. If you see the film, keep your eye out for Ginger from "Gilligan's Island" and Willis from "The Jeffersons".
The remake of this film was so horrible I couldn't even suffer through it (and I've suffered through a whole lotta bad films).
@terrier136 It's a harbinger! - i.e. that the robots can't/don't work properly for too long. In this scene, the housewife proudly exclaims (plausibly) her joy of cooking - ...to another housewife/robot?...to a lawn chair(!)...to the lawn itself(!) - Go figure!
If you find a way, please do it. This is a great movie. Like another person already said, it's more creepy and disturbinglike than anything else. Still a great movie though.
The old Stepford Wives movie was supposed to be satire. No woman would want to look or behave like that, pretending to be an airhead, acting dumb etc, At least thats what we thought in the 70s.The movie was also a satire on male fantasies of docile wives. Now you risk the "dyke" insult if you point out that many young women act real Stepford. Is it a pose? Just a passing fashion? Bright, educated girls doing that wiggling, giggling, omigod-I'm-like-so-dumb. Why would anyone choose that image?
what's more? us men don't want girls to act like those extreme stepford wives. they gotta be more interesting.a girl's social life and pro. accomplishment are completely separate.she can be a lawyer yet knows how to have fun and giggles with her friends when a hot guy shows up. guys also have to project certain image such as frat guy type, macho, muscular, surfer, hip hop mogul to gain respect from their peers and love from the ladies. we, like celebs, all project images that aren't 100% real
LOL...some women actually do this "im stupid and dumb but look at my boobs"thing..because they have self esteem issues and the easiest way to be validated by a man ( for them) is to show their a**).
@deatha44 A lot of women "actually" do this, and girls, more than ever..the best part is that tits and ass come and go..so it's a pretty pathetic " validation" by " a man" esp. when he's looking at the next tits and ass that comes along...evil men ! When my esteem is low I put a large sausage down my leg and look for validation at ladies night....
@tirnanog20 It's tricky. For starters, the narrative isn't (and isn't intended to be) literal - it's intended to be symbolic. The theme itself may be expressed through sex, but it's not actually about sex - it's about social roles.

Feminism means liberation, and a chance for women to gain an education and to find worthy and stimulating employment. Feminism is for women who have better things to do than change nappies and breed. The backlash against feminism that we have seen over the past ten years or so is frightening.
As a WILLING mother and homemaker (though certainly nothing close to a Stepford Wife, thank God), I take a lot of offense at the insinuation that there is somehow something wrong with me because I choose to "change nappies and breed," as you so crassly put it. Feminism is about choice. Not about feeling superior because your choice is different than someone else's. My lifestyle has just as much merit as that of a single, high-powered female executive. No more, no less.
I completely and totally agree. Being a homemaker has as much merit as being a career woman. My own mother has been a homemaker, and I greatly respect all that she has done to raise me in a comfortable home. I consider myself a feminist and women's rights advocate and I consider this belief really ALL about being about choice--a woman has the choice to be a homemaker or have a job/career. The plot of Stepford Wives was all about force, though, i.e. the force of the husbands.
@rulerofthebog Nothing is wrong with tending the hearth and raising children *per se.* Given that we'll reach 10 - 11 billion people during the next century (google "A Special Moment in History") -- your choice is questionable if you have more than one child who, by age 21, will consume more stuff than an Indian village. As for the SAHM -- it's not a vocation. Theoretical physics (which gave you your computer) is a vocation. SAHMs choose drudgery over excellence. Getting defensive won't help.
@blazefleur Drudgery is a matter of opinion. I love my kids and think raising them is a joy - even the difficult days and nights that sometimes come as part of the package. Why, may I ask, is SAHM not a vocation? Because I'm not getting paid? Apparently raising children to (hopefully) be happy, successful adults is nowhere near as demanding, time-consuming, rewarding, or worthwhile as building a computer. Point is, both jobs - and yes, SAHM IS a job - have merit, and neither choice is superior.
@rulerofthebog There is nothing wrong with that kind of choice, as long as it is your choice alone. Sadly in most cases - it isn't. It happened to my aunt, she weren't allowed to take a job by her husband, and she's turned into a neurotic mess because of it.
@rulerofthebog You are right on the mark, many people of both sexes never "understood" the simple idea of what women wanted, which was to be able to choose what they wanted for their lives. Not simply become some stuck-up power snob and also thought that hating men was the right attitude. Luckily the newer generation of women are not putting themselves (and men) through that. They simply seem to accept themselves for who and what they are. Of course men have had to accept many changes also…
@rulerofthebog Oh hush if you are so happy and confident in the choice you made you wouldnt be online ranting about it. I despise women who sit around the house all day anyway! Im certainly never going to be that way as a matter of fact the whole institution of marriage is obsolete!
@msnewsenior And I despise women who have this hoity-toity idea that all SAHMs do is sit around on their butts all day doing absolutely nothing. Yeah. Right. Because, you know, I just sit on the couch eating potato chips and let my newborn lie screaming in her own poo while the two-year-old drinks Listerine. *SARCASM*
Quite frankly, my dear, people like you are the reason I'm "online ranting" about my choice - which, incidentally, is exactly what you are doing, you hilarious hypocrite you.
@rulerofthebog Am I telling you all about my life?? No! So it's hardly hypocritical. I least respect women who are confident in their choice and don't go online telling everyone about it! Doesnt mean i like it but i respect it! It obviously bothers you or you wouldn't be here. Did I say you sat around all day! NO I said i dont like women who do it! Maybe you should read comments more carefully Miss Suzi Homemaker!
@msnewsenior Your comment "I'm certainly never going to be that way" seemed just as "ranty" about your own choice as you were accusing me of being - hence why I mentioned hypocrisy. I AM confident in my choice, but yes, it does bother me that many people have a gross misperception of what it means to be a SAHM. And your comment about women who sit around all day certainly seemed to be directed, by context, toward all SAHMs (and thus toward myself). Apologies for misunderstanding.
I also take a bit of issue at the fact that you apparently have less of a problem with SAHMs who aren't vocal about their choice than SAHMs who are. What - so it's okay to be a SAHM, as long as we're quiet about it? If anything, that just perpetuates the Stepford Wife motif - perfect little homemakers who sit down and shut up. I'm not being preachy by saying I'm that it's perfectly okay to be a SAHM - I'm making a point about feminism being about the ability to choose.
@rulerofthebog This movie isn't about looking down on your lifestyle. This movie is about a time when women didn't have the choices that you do. People forget how hugely different things were just 20 or 30 years ago. Those women grew up in a time when they couldn't rent their own apartment or have their own credit card. Women from that generation are ALWAYS telling me to have children. Nobody's telling you to abort.
@rulerofthebog Good for you, don't let anyone of these feminists bully you into their mode of thinking and behaving. It's because fo those, that American men are seeking overseas brides! I would like to see them all marry foreigners, then the moaning feminists can go to hell, they've brought it all on themselves!
It's sad that men would seek (mostly uneducated and poor) women from overseas mainly because they can't handle women of their own social class calling them on their b.s. and privilege. I fell sympathy for men like that and the women who feel the financial need to go along with such an arrangement. This is not the fault of feminists, but tragic and archaic social institutions of inequality. Most women who label themselves as feminists would be better off dying alone/happy than being with such men
THIS MOVIE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES OF THE 1970s! THE REMAKE DIDN'T HOLD UP TO THE ORIGINAL! I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THE KATHERINE ROSS CHARACTER GOT AWAY AND ONLY PRETENDED TO BE A ROBOT FOR THE SAKE OF HER KIDS! IF YOU LOOK IN HER EYES AT THE END OF THE MOVIE, THEY APPEAR TO BE MORE HUMAN THAN ROBOT.
This film couldn't of been released during a better time - during the women liberation movement of the Seventies.
Somehow, a recurring theme in author Ira Levin's work seems that the women characters get bashed upon than the men, like in "Rosemary's Baby". Why was that?
I mean, if its not husbands selling their wives' wombs to the devil, to bring hell on earth, in exchange for success, then its husbands murdering their wives for the perfect robot replacements.
They made the newer one funny because these days movies can't have too deep a message for us dumbed-down 21st century sheeple. We might get dangerous ideas in our heads like women's liberation and fighting for our rights and civil liberties again like back in the 60's and early 70's.::shudder::
A movie this creepy is a real rarity. It is just so disturbing, and this trailer of the movie doesn't give away too much, but it sets us up for real true scares. Thr remake was an absolute waste of good big screen space.
Saw this on TV last night for the first time and I admit, the ending was creepy and even tragic. I knew the basics about the movie but that was it. I really hoped she would make it out.
I loved this movie and the way it slowly built up suspense. It just amazes me how effective a movie can be without relying on all the crap they rely on in today's movies. I can't see a movie these days and believe anything about it. No more good orchestral scores, no more believable actors (everyone has to be beautiful), no more simple stories about regular folks. Sad state of affairs if you ask me.
After seeing the original version, which was a suspense thriller, the remake comes off as ridiculous with it's attempts at humor and turns the original plot into a bad joke. I couldn't believe that Christopher Walken agreed to be in it. And yes, the book is awesome.
@Californiachik85 She nearly does escape. "Diz" tricks her by kidnapping her children and playing a tape of a child crying in the main mansion (this lures her to the simulation chamber where her double is waiting).
mhmm,I liked the new version to, and I agree that the trailer doesnt look that great
I really want to see the old version though, it looks creepy :)
I dont see what everyones problem is with the new one; its just bringing the movie to a new generation of people who havent gotten the chance to see the old one
If you read the book and watch the 1975 film you realize the new version completely wrecked the entire concept of what the storyline was supposed to be about in the first place.
Also, jw, in the original verson, were they supposed to be upper class family like in the new one (w/ range rovers mercedes and the fact that it took place in CT)or was in a normal middle class family?
The remake was awful...a total comedy and not a very funny one at that. The original was very atmospheric and creepy...this is actually a good trailer too.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie when i first saw it, & Paula Prentiss was especially good. I remember one very unkind critic wrote about it, "It was difficult to tell the difference between Katherine Ross the housewife, & Katherine Ross the robot". Nasty!!, but her performance really was not that bad.
I saw this not too long ago and it was great. I have the remake on DVD and it is just as good.

Getting defensive won't help.
blazefleur 1 year ago
@blazefleur Drudgery is a matter of opinion. I love my kids and think raising them is a joy - even the difficult days and nights that sometimes come as part of the package. Why, may I ask, is SAHM not a vocation? Because I'm not getting paid? Apparently raising children to (hopefully) be happy, successful adults is nowhere near as demanding, time-consuming, rewarding, or worthwhile as building a computer. Point is, both jobs - and yes, SAHM IS a job - have merit, and neither choice is superior.
rulerofthebog 1 year ago

Of course men have had to accept many changes also…
JoeMC7 1 year ago 2
@rulerofthebog Oh hush if you are so happy and confident in the choice you made you wouldnt be online ranting about it. I despise women who sit around the house all day anyway! Im certainly never going to be that way as a matter of fact the whole institution of marriage is obsolete!
msnewsenior 1 year ago
@msnewsenior And I despise women who have this hoity-toity idea that all SAHMs do is sit around on their butts all day doing absolutely nothing. Yeah. Right. Because, you know, I just sit on the couch eating potato chips and let my newborn lie screaming in her own poo while the two-year-old drinks Listerine. *SARCASM*
Quite frankly, my dear, people like you are the reason I'm "online ranting" about my choice - which, incidentally, is exactly what you are doing, you hilarious hypocrite you.
rulerofthebog 1 year ago
@rulerofthebog Am I telling you all about my life?? No! So it's hardly hypocritical. I least respect women who are confident in their choice and don't go online telling everyone about it! Doesnt mean i like it but i respect it! It obviously bothers you or you wouldn't be here. Did I say you sat around all day! NO I said i dont like women who do it! Maybe you should read comments more carefully Miss Suzi Homemaker!
msnewsenior 1 year ago
@msnewsenior Your comment "I'm certainly never going to be that way" seemed just as "ranty" about your own choice as you were accusing me of being - hence why I mentioned hypocrisy. I AM confident in my choice, but yes, it does bother me that many people have a gross misperception of what it means to be a SAHM. And your comment about women who sit around all day certainly seemed to be directed, by context, toward all SAHMs (and thus toward myself). Apologies for misunderstanding.
rulerofthebog 1 year ago
I also take a bit of issue at the fact that you apparently have less of a problem with SAHMs who aren't vocal about their choice than SAHMs who are. What - so it's okay to be a SAHM, as long as we're quiet about it? If anything, that just perpetuates the Stepford Wife motif - perfect little homemakers who sit down and shut up. I'm not being preachy by saying I'm that it's perfectly okay to be a SAHM - I'm making a point about feminism being about the ability to choose.

Nope, more merit.
High powered female executives are invariably anti-family.
As are a hefty percentage of high powered male executives.
aRomanSoldier 1 year ago
@rulerofthebog This movie isn't about looking down on your lifestyle. This movie is about a time when women didn't have the choices that you do. People forget how hugely different things were just 20 or 30 years ago. Those women grew up in a time when they couldn't rent their own apartment or have their own credit card. Women from that generation are ALWAYS telling me to have children. Nobody's telling you to abort.
sp00kyb00ts 10 months ago
@rulerofthebog Good for you, don't let anyone of these feminists bully you into their mode of thinking and behaving. It's because fo those, that American men are seeking overseas brides! I would like to see them all marry foreigners, then the moaning feminists can go to hell, they've brought it all on themselves!
sagilady52 8 months ago

Jal8919536 3 years ago

This is so much better than the remake its not even funny.
CinemaZebra 3 years ago 8
After seeing the original version, which was a suspense thriller, the remake comes off as ridiculous with it's attempts at humor and turns the original plot into a bad joke. I couldn't believe that Christopher Walken agreed to be in it. And yes, the book is awesome.

What happened in the end of this movie? Did she turn into a stepford wife?
Californiachik85 4 years ago
Yep. but you gotta rent it--soooo creepy!!!
xocolatl3409 4 years ago
@Californiachik85 She nearly does escape. "Diz" tricks her by kidnapping her children and playing a tape of a child crying in the main mansion (this lures her to the simulation chamber where her double is waiting).

She was so close of getting out of stepford at the end so close!

The ending is indeed happy for men, but the follow up which is called "The Stepford Daughters" redresses the balance.

mhmm,I liked the new version to, and I agree that the trailer doesnt look that great
I really want to see the old version though, it looks creepy :)
I dont see what everyones problem is with the new one; its just bringing the movie to a new generation of people who havent gotten the chance to see the old one
girlredefind 3 years ago
If you read the book and watch the 1975 film you realize the new version completely wrecked the entire concept of what the storyline was supposed to be about in the first place.

Also, jw, in the original verson, were they supposed to be upper class family like in the new one (w/ range rovers mercedes and the fact that it took place in CT)or was in a normal middle class family?

The remake was awful...a total comedy and not a very funny one at that. The original was very atmospheric and creepy...this is actually a good trailer too.

well i kinda disagree, i think they made it a comedy to not steal what the orignal steford had, if you know what i mean.
