  • LOL! when Billy said THE NC-17 portion of the show!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • holy smokes, i had no idea she could sing like that. amazing performance. wonderful, simply perfect.

  • Su vooooz! wowww! ella es la reina del pop! es increíble! gran voz! gran canción! espectaculr performance...

  • suck it 8ters

  • WOW!!

  • AMAZING!

  • She's nervous because she's a human being, and she's fabulous !

Take that ! She can F'ing sing, and she's great.

    Long Live Queen M !

  • Marilyn Moroe ? rs

  • @ffelipexd an obvious homage as she is performing it at the oscars. marilyn got her image from other people before her as well. however this one madonna even labels as her "marilyn monroe phase". this is the kind of credit certain other "singers" of today refuse to give. sigh. some people should not be allowed to comment at all.

  • Great 2:22-2:32

  • @sashabaronisTheBest AGREE! she can sing after all! who said she couldn't

  • Lol, so nervous because she had to sing it live. She's trembling.

  • @blondgod1999 Yes her voice is trembling!!!!!!!!!

  • The best mezzosoprano what I heard

  • Wow the best!

  • the original , the best, the one and only queen

  • This is why, Madonna is Madonna!!!!

  • Mimed like every Oscar performance.

  • @Kenmorfdublin NOT!

  • @jerryhagan2 YES!

  • @Kenmorfdublin - I'm teh first one to slag off Madonna for lip-syncing. I thought teh Super Bowl performance was a joke. But this is ABSOLOUTELY NOT lip-synced. Performers singing nominations for Best Song don't mime.

  • There was a house in New Orleans.

  • To about real entertainment, this performance is actually pretty boring. But it's seductive and sensual that's why people loved it. I bet a lot of men watching her on this night had a BONER during this entire performance.

  • I'll be the first to admit that Madonna is far from being a true original. And having been a true fan since '82, it almost sounds like a slap in the face. Now, let's just say that if imitiation is the sincerest form of flattery, then she definitely succeeds in this performance. She truly does capture the "look" and moves of vintage Marilyn. And to think she's doing this in front of Academy members who may have actually MET Marilyn, I'd say that's pretty damn bold!

    And that bod---flawless!

  • @JimmBailey It's not boldness, when it's THIS obvious (you can't just "imitate" such an iconic figure; it would be like claiming that drag queens are Cher wannabes :-) and this toungue-in-cheek, then it's not an imitation, it's simply an homage.

  • MADONNA IS F*KING AMAZING

  • grandiosa presentacion de madonna en el oscar de 1990, es la mejor de todas las presentaciones musicales en el oscar, cada vez mas aburrido, es bueno recordar a la reina , haciendo recordar los tiempos de rita haywort, maravillosa

  • I'll bet Marilyn Monroe fans were thinking one thing when they were watching this 20 years ago. Reductive.

  • @dayg715 was a movie character, stupid, and of course everyone knows it, except LM

  • @dayg715 LOL

  • She's trying to hard. Marilyn Monroe didn't try to be sexy, she just was.

  • @MyFistFullOfDollars Marilyn didn't have such as long and successful career as Madonna though. Marilyn may have been around before Madonna but before Marilyn there was Jean Harlow and Mae West. Madonna has done far more than Marilyn ever did.

  • @TheSolitaryHeart That's because she died.

  • @TheSolitaryHeart Marilyn didn't try to sleep with men just to gain her popularity. Madonna did. She had serveral sexual relationships before she was famous. Marilyn started as this modest sweet 16 year old country girl. All of what Marilyn was during her life was the pressure that hollywood put upon her. She wanted to be belong to something, that's why she had no choice but to accept it. Everyone was envious of her even those starts you mentioned. Don't you wonder why many still copy her today.

  • @popups46okay do not swear about marilyn.

  • Who do you know all this???

  • @popups46okay I assume you have proof of those allegations against Madonna?

  • @MyFistFullOfDollars marilyn monroe was fat average 60's trick. ain't nothing special in my book. she's dead and only old fogey's reminiscing about the good old days are missing her :)

  • @ChesterDoraemon Yeah, and that's why they just made two movies about her, one of which was nominated for golden globes and academy awards, her image is a legendary icon, and she is copied by many celebrities (even Madonna here in this very video),. Ask almost any female celebrity who their idols are, and Marilyn will almost always be on the list (including Madonna). Almost everything Madonna has done was done before, she just copies it and makes it mainstream, ignorant people don't know that.

  • @MyFistFullOfDollars Marilyn was just trailer park white trash. Madonna has european italian and french facial features that distinguish her from pure redneck filth.

  • @ChesterDoraemon And have you seen Madonna's new video? Again she blatantly imitates Marilyn... Just give props where props are due.

  • 1947–1962 - Marilyn Monroe

    1979–present - Madonna

This Performance 1990-91 (I don't really know well)

Madonna did not copied anything about Marilyn -.-

Madonna wasn't even active as a singer when Marilyn was alive! Marilyn is such an ICON and she let a HUGE mark in this world. This is more like a tribute to Marilyn than any other thing! A lot of female stars do it because I don't think that we will ever see another HUGE female star like Marilyn!

  • @MyFistFullOfDollars Madonna seriously is sexy. Here she is imitating Marilyn to a great degree, that is where it may seem hard, but still, she did a great job. Marilyn is an icon. Everyone knows her face and name. Her name equates with sex and being sexy. Madonna realizes this. Whenever anyone wants to emulate something they refer to what they think is ideal. Well except for me, I just look in the mirror. LOL j/k.

  • @roblou62 You're funny!

  • It gave me the chills... Still

  • I have seen millions of her performances, no doubt, this is one of her best.

  • I love Madonna but I think Bernadette Peters does this song much better

  • amo a Madonna!

  • she's minor league. But her fame has blinded reason. I can think of a dozen women who could have sung this better.

  • @zzyyxxo So very true. People are so easily brainwashed.

  • Magnificent !!!! Nailed it !!!! Awesome !!! She showed then perfection + art as usual

  • Great voice and performance. She Got everybody talking about her at the Oscar then. The one and only Madonna

  • Comment removed

  • great voice

  • Her performance at the Academy Awards was named by Billboard as the seventh "most awesome Oscar performance"

  • his people are nuts saying that this is horrible I've seen madonna live signing worse than this!!! This is pretty good actually

  • @odonodaverdadequedoi "Worse" than this?? I've always thought this was arguably her best live performance. For Madonna it's actually pretty flawless. Especially for that period, because admittedly she did improve over the years, but back then... I still can't quite believe she pulled it off this well.

  • This sounded like complete shit, compared to the film version.

  • HORRIBLE VOICE.

  • Loves it the first time I watch it live back in 1991 and still love it now

  • a guilty pleasure Ive always loved :)

  • What's with the butt clutching?

  • billy crystal isnt funny.

  • I don't like her singing here, she's basically just screaming the higher notes. It's still a lovely perfomance, very entertaining. And as Madonna said in interviews back then she modelled her look and performance on Mae West and not Marilyn Monroe. People really don't know anything about the Studio Era anymore.

  • Her voice was horrible in this but it didn't matter who was listening?

  • @MegaPatriot123 You're a fucking idiot since ALL the critics said this was one of the best Academy Awards performances ever. The composer of this song, the great Stephen Sondhiem, said she did a masterful job, vocally.

  • @cowgirlamy1 I think her best asset is being able to market herself. If you think I'm wrong play this again and don't watch it just listen. It hurt my ears. I use to teach music so I know a thing or two about voice.

  • @MegaPatriot123 Riiiight. You're a music teacher. hmmm mmmm. Well, I'll take it from actual critics and the great Stephen Sondheim who all universally praised Madonna's vocal performance here. Maybe you were just a crappy teacher?

  • BEST PERFORMANCE EVER IN OSCARS ACADEMY AWARDS, AMAZING, BRILLIANT, EXCELENT, MADONNA FOREVER

  • God I love this so much. It's so much fun and she looks amazing. No matter what anyone says about Madonna, they cannot deny she knows how to put on a show and keep all eyes on her!

  • Glued to the television watching this absolutely brilliant performance. Love the earring toss at the end.

  • it was in 1991. not 1990

  • Perfection.

  • after all these years watching this still leaves me speechless, breathless...she is one of a kind!

  • Love this performance

  • I love this sista. So creative.

  • Say whatever you want about Madonna as an artist or public figure, this performance was a total fail vocally. This is about the level of Rihanna's vocals when she was 17, and Gaga's never been this pathetic in the fourth octave.

  • @Astariel2525 You mean to say copycat Gaga has never sounded this good. Not that anyone cares about Gaga any longer, since she's already been left behind by people like Adele and Kate Perry.

  • @MrTraherne

Madonna doesn't know what vibrato is here. It's really sad if Katy Perry's live vocals are better than yours. Anybody can lower their larynx to make a bigger sound and sing somewhat in tune. Here Madonna strains harder than Christina Aguilera on a B4.

  • @Astariel2525 Now that everyone is so accustomed to hearing vocals autotuned to hell and back, they've forgotten that a real voice is imperfect, and no this is not a flawless vocal performance. She's one of the most important cultural icons EVER and all you can do is dissect this one stupid performance out of thirty years of performances, and throw around all kinds of technical terms to make yourself look like an expert.

  • @Candyfan993 people say madonna cant sing, yet seem to overlook that madonna has sold over 300million records...

  • Comment removed

  • @Astariel2525 Who the fuck cares about octaves and vibratos? Just because a singer isn't perfect note for note doesn't mean they can't sing. I see you're from the American Idol school of thought..The idea that vocals have to be perfect pitch for pitch with no regard for PERSONALITY, STAR POWER, and PRESENCE which Madonna has in spades. She's MADONNA and without her you wouldn't have that ugly cunt in the featured video on your profile, so show some respect.

  • @Candyfan993 Please don't listen to that idiot. If that thing thinks Gaga has a great voice then you gotta just laugh. Gaga has a soulless, generic voice. Gaga has never and can't ever give a vocal performance like Madonna does here on her best day. Madonna's voice is awesome. Perfect? No but very very good. That idiot can't even throw around the correct techincal terms anyway. LOL.

  • Comment removed

  • @Candyfan993 Exactly, not only that there is more to music than just technique. its like saying jackson pollock was talentless because he didnt paint landscapes and watercolours. most people who like gaga are philistines and know nothing of the creative process. and it works for gaga, she basically feeds their delusions with all this little monster shit, which is a load of bs

  • @SuperSimonuk

I never knew Madonna fans were so easily offended. I can't post an honest opinion on youtube? :/

  • @Astariel2525 Well this is a Madonna video after all, and most of the people that watch it are Madonna fans, so naturally most of us disagree with you. Say what you will about her, it wouldn't be the first time she was criticized, but at the end of the day her status as a living legend speaks for itself, as does the fact that she's still the benchmark by which all the other girls are measured.

  • @Astariel2525 save your fucking comments ;)

  • @Astariel2525 You're using the wrong approach. Madonna is neither a naturally talented nor trained singer. She can do fine (provided she's sitting down), but everybody (including herself) knows she's not to be compared to artists with a proper vocal range. You have to compare her live performances of that period with this one and at that point you'll see that this was actually top-notch, it really was. The way she delivered the final lines makes up for any flaws you can list.

  • @cowfman Madonna is plenty talented vocally. She isn't a big voiced singer, that is where everyone makes the mistake trying to dissect her voice. She is a medium voiced singer who can sing in a big voice if she wants to. She actually has a very decent range. Stephen Sondheim ( who wrote this song) said she is a very underrated vocalist ( as did David Foster).

  • @cowgirlamy1 what do you think she is? I THINK Alto. MAYBE mezza-soprano, but I doubt it.

  • @axltyler Mezzo-Soprano for sure

  • @MrTraherne

I also like the way you add the "copycat" to Gaga's name. Very mature.

  • @Astariel2525 Spare us your biased bullshit regarding Madonna. As far as Gaga goes, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Adele and Taylor Swift all have left Gaga in the fucking dust. Nobody gives a shit about Gaga anymore. She has jumped the shark. She has waaaaaay overdone it and everyone is sick of her. It is laughable you even bring Gaga and her autotuned boring ass voice into this equation...

  • @cowgirlamy1 then again, nobody gives a fuck about rihana taylor swift etc, either

  • Comment removed

  • @hidalgo699 Lady gaga is so fake its beyond serious, i mean, she doesnt even use her own name. and we dont really know what she looks like. At least madonna isnt afraid to be herself

  • @Astariel2525 Thats probably because at the age of 17 Rihana was probably copying madonnna, but then she still does just like gaga, et, al and who gives a fuck about octaves seriously. its like saying you would only buy a mercedes because the engine looks nice. Is rather listen to an average voiced madonna, than some glass shattering bore

  • madonna also made absurd perfomance MARYLIN MONROE

  • @eduk6669 its meant to be ironic

  • Long live The Queen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Anyway back to Madonna! LOL

This performance is just a bolt of lightning electrifying! This has got to be the most legendary Oscars night performance by any big artist ever!

Madonna had everyone in the palm of her hand

  • Pure class <3

  • Ohhh, that Arsenalgooner-guy has really no life, Zero, nada!

  • GOOGLE MADONNA IS A COPY PASTE QUEEN OF RIP OFFS.

  • Wow, Madonna's incredibly talented and very courageous to sing live at the Oscar. Even Renee Zellweger decided to back down on performing live at the Oscar for her Chicago nominated song.

  • Love it, THANK YOU!!

  • i dont care if you like Madonna or not. if you ignored who the performer was in this performance, you have to admit, she did a great job.

  • Back when she still had a womans body.

  • She is identitly at JAYNE MANSFIELD!!....

  • это по крайней мере бездарно..она в подмётки не годится сегодняшним "певицам"...

  • 3:27 time mark, i didn't know she had it in her! she rocked this video.

  • @TheArsenalgooner What about Marilyn Monroe "copying" Jean Harlow's look? She was the original hollywood blonde bombshell.

    There you go.

  • @TheSolitaryHeart SORRY!!!!!! Don't make excuses for this boxy square shaped loser.

  • @TheArsenalgooner If I ever met you I'd bark like a rabid dog at you and take a dump on your face. And you would enjoy it. WOOF WOOF!

  • @TheSolitaryHeart madonna has some SMALL ass tits.

  • @TheArsenalgooner No, It's Breathless Mahoney honey!!!

  • @TheArsenalgooner

You're making a fool of yourself. Truth is, Madonna is channeling Jayne Mansfield way MORE than Monroe here! LOL.. This performance is EPIC.

Unlike Gaga who just COPIES, END OF, Madonna takes someone else's imagery (like Monroe's) & turns such image on its head & makes it entirely different. That's ARTISTRY. Her Monroe (or Harlowe-esque) image has since become a symbol of empowered female sexuality, self-aware & self-exultant instead of Monroe's subservient victim bombshell

  • @brushpicks23 hahaha you are a liar! Madonna's has SMALL tits-MANSFIELD HAD HUGE TITS!! Go look at the "madonna is a copy paste queen of rip offs list" and scroll down to the side by side Jayne with Madonna-it is like a boy next to real, buxom woman. Madonna's got ugly lat and triceps here and this ENTIRE ROUTINE-the costume, the moves-IS STOLEN-COPY PASTE! WAKE THE FUCK UP UP. A COPY IS A COPY! and madonna has really small tits.

  • @TheArsenalgooner

You base "copying" on the size of tits??? Brains, meet TheArsenalgooner! Hahaha

    Listen:

Mansfield/Monroe are NOT pop stars but moviestars. Madonna appropriates their imagery AS A POP STAR in the pop music milieu and THEN add crucial elements that thereby TRANSFORM the appropriated imagery into something FRESH & NEW. That's Madonna's art. Get it? Maybe u couldn't! LOL

Besides, Monroe & Mansfield themselves were PATTERNED after Jean Harlow!

    Gaga.. just COPIES. End Of.

  • @brushpicks23 Sorry, her tits are so fucking small you can barely see them.

  • @TheArsenalgooner

Small or not, her tits (all natural btw) are just fine. Mega Fabulous! It's your eyes that are defective. Go see an optometrist. LOL

  • From The Eye Roller: "Besides "Material Girl" video, Madonna copied Marilyn Monroe's appearance at "How To Marry A Millionaire" première when she performed at the 1991 Oscars which was also a rip off of Marilyn from start to finish; copied many MM photos in April 1991 issue of Vanity Fair; copied one of MM's looks in "Bus Stop" on Truth Or Dare posters (aka In Bed With Madonna);

  • @TheArsenalgooner

Oh.. you seem so much a superficial observer of pop culture (if you did ANY observation at all! U just latch on to what a website says, eh? LOL) and can't quite grasp the nature of Madonna's work & the ALL-ORIGINAL impact & influence she's had in pop culture or culture in general. Or in ART. YT is too limited a place 2 tutor u.

But rest assured, those who grasp what's going on think quite differently from you. In fact, Monroe's estate can't quite THANK Madonna enough ;)

  • @brushpicks23 yeah, right in your dreams. nothing you said made any sense. When you are RIPPING off THE EXACT WORK of close to THIRTY different people and another 30 odd people you look VERY close to THAT IS CALLED A RIP OFF-NOT A TRIBUTE. Madonna's impact as been slut culture, hardcore porn going mainstream, chicks with bodies like guys with narrow hips and small tits (see above), hater culture and greed. THAT'S NOT ART THAT IS CAPITALISM.

  • @TheArsenalgooner

Hahah.. Of course, I won't make sense to you coz you have no sense to begin with! Hahaha

But, sorry for you, Madonna is already a mega LEGEND OF LEGENDS with ONLY the Beatles and Elvis belonging to her level. ALL pop-- no, make that MUSIC-- stars now are doing things according to what SHE established. BAR NONE.

And yes, she IS capitalism.. The best to fuse ART and CAPITALISM..and those who can't work out capitalism are the ones ANGRY about it. LOL

  • @brushpicks23 Madonna copied MM's April 1952 Life Magazine cover in a scene from Who's That Girl; copied MM riding a circus elephant (same exact costume) in a Japanese TV commercial; copied 1960s MM in Hard Candy promotional photos.

Copying the same star on and off for 25 years is called a RIP OFF, NOT a tribute, NOT an inspiration."

Copying the same star on and off for 25 years is called a RIP OFF, NOT a tribute, NOT an inspiration."

    -The Eye Roller

  • @TheArsenalgooner Wow, you're so smart! You've noticed how Marilyn Monroe was one of the biggest influences in Madonna's career! I didn't know that the "Material Girl" video was based upon a scene on the classic and eternal movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"! I can't believe it! And you will have noticed as well that most of the times Madonna has been influenced by the movies, particularly the classics of Hollywood's Golden Age. It's actually no secret. It is something she has always admitted.

  • @RushyOverhill

Copying the same stars on and off for 25 years is called a RIP OFF, NOT a tribute, NOT an "INFLUENCE." Google Madonna is a copy paste. and wtf? she has the shittiest body. It looks like a man in drag.

  • @TheArsenalgooner When you figure revolves around a concept, that concept is always there in your work. Any artist works this way: “pick up and adapt”. Madonna has always done that and I’ll tell you more, if instead of listing the times she has “copied” (as you say) you stopped to watch what she started and created, you would understand why for 30 years her relevance has continued intact. No fraud survives more than 30 years, time is the best judge... She became gold.

  • @TheArsenalgooner

Your understanding of pop culture and art is BREATHTAKINGLY next to zero.. and your using the microscopic and skewed "knowledge" or "understanding" you have as arguments proves that a little knowledge goes a long way in making fools out of one. So, REALLY try to understand things first so u can begin making urself less of a fool..

COPY-PASTE? THAT'D BE THE STALKER GAGA, the most flagrant Madonna WANNABE. Oh, well.. Gaga's on the last 30 seconds of her 15 minutes, anyway..LOL

  • BREASTLESS MAHONEY.

  • LOL, I see a lot of 'not a great live performance singer ' comments, and all I can say is thank GOD i'm not a music critic cos I think this is awesome ang that I think she sounded phenominal....& i'm pretty sure this is not lip sync'd. wish more ppl would realize they are witnessing an living among a legend.

  • The awkward moment the glove gets stuck on her arm at the beginning of the performance O.o lmfao. Other than tht, great job madonna.

  • awesome !!!!

  • 1 of the best live performance by Madonna that I have ever seen. QUEEN!

  • Madonna was the first to say it that she was no great singer,,,esp live...

But i will tell ya this!

She did a GREAT JOB HERE!

  • This is one of her finest performances. She was a little nervous. She had a lot to prove and hollywood and the world was watching. She totally nailed it! An absolutely flawless performane! It is one of the defining moments in her career. Watch this and then watch Human Nature or Frozen or ... and so on and soooof forth.. ah... Legend

  • @megagrandemassive sorry, this was someone elses, namely Marilyn Monroe's ENTIRE ACT STOLEN.

  • The fact that she's not a great singer only adds to her appeal. This performance, and her entire career, is sensational despite god-given talents. She built it all herself, the Lord be damned.

  • Her hand is shaking like a leaf. So fucking adorable.

  • Foi a melhor apresentação musical de um artista cantor no Oscar ! NInguém até hoje fez o que Madonna fez... cantou, representou, surpreendeu e causou furor !

Um marco na Academia... inesquecível !!!!

  • Phenomenal performance by a legendary star! No one else can command an audience like she can with only her voice, a faux fur boa and diamond necklace.

  • Weak vocals and lulz at how nervous she was about singing live. LOL.

  • @blondgod1999 She wasn't nervous about performing live, you halfwit. Madonna almost always performs live. She was nervous about performing at the Oscars. She's always wanted to be taken seriously by Hollywood

  • J'adoooooooore!! Et que de souvenirs pour moi! Merci à celui qui l' a postée, c'est cool.

  • It's 1991. Where MJ and Madonna went together for the awards!

  • the act was good the singing sucks

  • This is amazing!

  • can you imagine the oscars giving 6 mins to ANYONE today?

    Oh, Madonna- HAPPY BDAY Week.

  • I can just see all the people in the audience with their mouth open and their chins on the floor

  • I was just gonna listen to this in the background but this is a truly en-capturing performance. Literally couldnt take my eyes off of it, it isnt that complicated or extreme but this is everything a performance should be... and thats why she has influenced so many people. This is evidence why she is the queen of pop.

  • SPENDIDA..... UNICA....
