Wonder if Newman walked off the scene and started cracking up. For a second, I thought he might have lost it during the scene. Obviously, that wouldn't have made the final cut, but I am sure that there is a blooper reel of this. Strother Martin was awesome

Many of the funniest scenes in this movie involve Strother Martin.

He was one of the greatest character actors who ever lived, best known as the warden in another Paul Newman flick, Cool Hand Luke ("what we have here is failure to communicate").

After many years of playing bad guys, he finally had a chance to show off his skills as a comedy actor. It's too bad it didn't happen sooner in his career, especially since he died at 61. :-((((

With Paul Newman, yep. Newman & Martin also appeared together in "Pocket Money" (1972), though I haven't gotten around to seeing that one yet.

I've often wondered if Newman & Strother were friends in real life. Since Martin appeared in at least three of Newman's movies (that I know of), I figure they were.

@ajbalfour Paul Newman was no dummy - he surrounded himself with fellow actors that he worked with all during his career - this made his acting better because he was used to working with this incredible array of talent and yes, I believe they were mostly close friends in real life.
