This is a very nice march. I really like the second chord in the trio... it's really unexpected, and Mr. Frei uses a really nice melody note to go with it. The interlude is good too, with the descending chromatics.

I can tell he was trying, however slightly, to break out of the boring old mold that most European (especially German and Austrian) marches tended to be written in.

Many American march composers had already been changing and developing the march for a while.
