Under the current treaty, yes, they are within their rights and the law to collect specimens. The more you collect the better picture you'll get of the health of the whale population. It's not just the diet of the animals, it's everything in them. If you want to keep tabs on the health of a population you need to know the health of a large number of individuals within that population. That means any bacteria or viruses or toxins need to be sampled, the organs examined, etc. The bigger the sample the better the picture of health you'll get of the population. And remember that we're not talking about 1k Blue Whales, they sample multiple species.

Under the current treaty, yes, they are within their rights and the law to collect specimens. The more you collect the better picture you'll get of the health of the whale population. And when they're done with the research they'll probably have a lot of dead whale bits left over. If Japanese people are willing to pay top yen for dissection table scraps then that just means more money for science.

Actually, SS activists have illegally boarded Japanese ships and do carry firearms. There was a big hullabaloo a while back when 2 SS activist got arrested when he boarded a Japanese ship.
SSCS has a history of violence that starts with its founding in 1977 when Watson was booted from Greenpeace for attacking seal hunters, temporarily costing GP their tax exempt status. SS lost their IWC observer status when they sank the Icelandic whaling fleet in 1986.

It's not just the diet of the animals, it's everything in them. If you want to keep tabs on the health of a population you need to know the health of a large number of individuals within that population. That means any bacteria or viruses or toxins need to be sampled, the organs examined, etc. The bigger the sample the better the picture of health you'll get of the population. And remember that we're not talking about 1k Blue Whales, they sample multiple species.

I wonder how the US Navy would be forced to respond in such a situation. If there were a US carrier or US warship nearby and the Sea Shepherd sent an SOS that they were taking small arms fire from Japanese ships... I think the US Navy ship would have to come to it's aid. Watson lies. Impossible that he saved 4-500 whales last year. They spent 4-5 days out of 5 mo with 1 ship out of many. He's just taking credit where credit is not due. It's normal for Japan to take 4-500 whales total. SS is not directly responsible for anything but committing ecoterrorist crimes. And finally they are in deep doo doo.
