Chains actually wear out the the sidewalls of the tyres. WA1200's were I work are constantly getting tyres rotated to keep them from wearing out before the tread. Obviously this company has plenty of money though to allow an operator to load that far away from the truck. I bet that loader would do a 100,000k's before it hit 20,000hrs.
@mintclint Do you want him to be so close he can't even turn or something. I thought the distance from the truck was spot on. You gotta burn diesel to lift the bucket up anyway so you might as well be moving forward as well and have a bit of space.
thats a difrent thing on those small loaders, their can last for 20,000 hours but in these machines when you drive over rocks sometimes it eats the tires more quickly. (sorry for the typos english isnt my best)
The Caterpillar 994 and the LeTourneau L-2350 loaders are bigger but even those loaders will be eclipsed by larger loaders that are designed to load haul trucks with 750+ton carrying capacity. Those loaders will boast 5000+HP diesel-electric engines, 70+inch diameter wheels shod with 17+foot tires, and 100+cubic yard buckets. They will probably be about 30 feet wide, 30 feet tall (with the bucket down), and 50-60 feet long. And, yes, they will also need chains on their front tires.
At 100,000 machines are pretty bad, chasis cracking badly and that kind of thing, usually time for a new one (we rebuild them in between). It's rare for us to get a full 20,000 hours from a machine with no major component failure.
Our gear (988G/H, 992D/G, 994's) run in hard rock open cut pit operations on mostly dry hire type work where the operators dont give a f****k mostly. This might have something to do with tyre life, but we wouldn't get a quater of 24 years from our tyres. Not doubting what you say, must just be a different application.
chains are only req on the front the reason is when your loaded you cant see the ground in front so if a tyre hits a rock u stop coz the back tyre follows and the chains give less traction on rock and dirt, but i love the joystick stearing we have a 988f with it
uhhh, lets do the numbers, one tire on that loader= $15000??? life of tire- limited. set of chains for that tire= cheap, life of chains= forever. lets see, thats a tough equation. put the chains on and forget about the tires going bad for awhile or shit all over ur $15000 tire? id stick with the chains all day long, front and back
?? Tyres last the life of the machine ?? I want what ever tyres you have. Our machines will get probably 50,000 - 100,000 hours before they are really destroied (we rebuild them inbetween) Tyres won't see 10,000 hours, depending on operator and working conditions, 4,000 - 7,000 is more expected.
@oipbhakeld What kind of idiot puts chains on a loader Hahaha especially on a hard surface. Limited tyre life my ass you'll get 20,000 hours out of a rear set easily.
@KillerBeeGuts When you do not know what causes it, nothing is said ... If the strings are made, it poue have the info por aderente and the tires last the life of the machine, even with chains
why use chains? thst must be the dumbest question in a long time. if he rips open the tire, think of the loss of time and production. anyway, its nothing wrong with his work, as THE PERSON OPERATING THIS MACHINE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING, IN CONTR. TO THOSE IDIOTMORONS HERE ON UTUBE PRETENDING TO KNOW SO MUCH...NUFF SAID
Why use chains? It must be an american thing, if correctly blast and level floor and employ a good operator, then the $/tonne is cheaper than $/tonne with chains trying to save tyre wear!
why there chains on the tires? operators spinning the tires to get a full bucket not good? park closer next time....its all about production and time ya know?
Bridgestone is, I do not know any more if it is radial nerves, I shall look on Monday morning and I shall say to you dimenssions this week, greetings Mitch
That make funny see itself in video, especially that it is the first time.. But when we work on this Cat 988 hours one do not report any more the luck which we have to have a monster similar!
Chains are there to protect the tire. there's a video on here somewhere of them doing it to a tire.

That cab looks very light - Is there ROPS / FOPS built into it ? If there is, it's very hard to see where..
Muffinrider 2 years ago
Good afternoon! Yes there is a ROPS bar / FOPS integrated, it is inside and according to all accounts, it is more resistant!

@Mitch4you So, are the chains on there for traction or to protect the tyres?
KillerBeeGuts 1 year ago
@oipbhakeld chains do not last forever...they eventually get ground down to nothing
DamnStraightM35A2 1 year ago
@DamnStraightM35A2 fair enough. a set of chains is much cheaper than a new tire at any rate though.
oipbhakeld 1 year ago
agreed with the chains, we use them where i work on the tractors.
how much longer does it take to wear down the treads with them

chains front and back work three reasons. protection for the tire, longer tread life, and extra traction
supaky 3 years ago
Chains on the back wheels is a little excessive, but on the front defintly a good idea.
