Great job singing this song. I was most impressed with your ability to hold the lingering notes, much like the original. Almost every other singer I've heard cuts the notes too short, and that ruins the song (imho). Most impressive job. Please keep up the good work.

This song fits also for the Irishmen that fought for the Mexican army during the War with Mexico, even though it may not have been written for that, it really brings memories reminensce to the Irish battalions that fought in the battles of Monterrey/Mexico City. I love this video; the battalion had the flag depicted on this video (arp). Irishmen migrated to the Americas and give their lives on different sides, different countries. This is one of my favorite songs from Garth Brooks.

@corporal747 As far as I know it was indeed Garth Brooks who wrote this song. Most seem to think it´s about the Irish who escaped Ireland because of the hunger overthere and went to America. With no money they joined the army on both sides of the war. This song is most likely about a small group of Irishmen that knows they won't survive and now hold on to returning to their homeland after they died

I know a lot of Irish fought for the Union, but I wasn't aware there were any or many that fought for the Confederacy. Anybody know anything about how this happened? Some of the Irish that emigrated to Southern states just took up the cause for the South?
