What was the actual result of the mistake? The guy not being able to drive or the column he hit being in the wrong place? And on another note, did they have felt-tip pens back in 1939?

@Madness832 What happened was that the car needed 1/2 a mile to brake, and another 1/3 of a mile to veer and go around the column. When Cooper added the fractions he got 2/5 of a mile out to start the evasive maneuver. But that wasn't enough distance to slow and go around the column, and so SMASH!

I have'nt had to work with fractions like that since grade school. I had to actually think of how to do this again. I use decimals 1/16 is 0.0625 so much faster and easier.
