This song is the reason i miss Mike Portnoy. I'm trying to learn this but its so hard, if i knew how to play drums well and knew the drum parts for this song, it would make learning this on guitar way easier. Not even Tool can comprehend the time signatures in this song. The time signatures in this song is like Mind Fuck in a good way!!!! *)
I can actually hear the bass guitar more in this song than every song ever made. Also i looked at the tabs for this song and it has some trippy riffs. Actually this song has the most interesting riffs I've ever heard in my life! *)
Geeze... not only did Dream Theater pull off a song about stem cell research, but they seem to never once take a side. It emphasizes that there ARE two views, and both need to be considered throughout. It would have been so easy to just support one side... but they show us both. Bravo.
@SwiftrunnerXXY and that is the way to make a successful argument in which the reader, or in this case the listener, comes to their own conclusion and view point on the subject in discussion.
@cgmsdh If someone thought liberal = retard, then it'd be meaningless for him to call somebody a "liberal retard". I don't get why do at least 25 people (at this moment) find your comment relevant.
Oh bollocks! I accidentaly hit the dislike button. It was a genuine mistake... A stupid mistake, admittedly but a mistake nonetheless. Does anybody know if I can undo it? Either way - please accept my sincerest apologies, I'll be more careful in future.
@tonyvice6661616 okay, Schism sounds NOTHING like this song. If you think so you're stupid. Tool is fucking awesome, Dream Theater is fucking awesome. You're only trying to piss people off. TROLL. They might share similar qualities but my goodness where on earth are you hearing Schism in this?
@shredfix1993 i understand that...but that doesn't mean anyone can just say "oh they copied Tool" far different styles and sounds. Both of these bands are incredible and I'm all about giving credit where credit is due. Dream Theater created a masterpiece with this album and Lateralus is a masterpiece too.
@Poonard i agree, a key example is on scenes from a memory, they used OK Computer as one of their influencing albums, and i reckon it doesn sound anything like radiohead!
@MyMytalMajesty That's awesome! It's too bad I live in Minnesota since I looked at their tour dates and they're not gonna play here this tour so that sucks.
I never get tired of the bass intro. I was hoping they'd play this last year when I saw them, but the only song they played from this album was an extended version of Solitary Shell which more than made up for it ^^
I love the way dream theater put the question in front of you without taking a side and let your mind burn with thoughts. I think that the great debate is not only if we should or shouldn't use stem cells - Science just made we find once again a much older philosophical debate. It's about what can we call alive and what we can call human.
@nikolas99t It has kind of a tool vibe... but if you want to hear some DT stuff that's just like 46 & 2 just chek out "Home", in Scenes From a Memory... the intro sounds just like Tool's...
@BrianWilson720 indeed, home's intro has a 46&2 feeling. not weird since portnoy has said that tool is one of their major influences for both of these albums.
I've heard that a male scienctist had a breakthough in the lab using stem-cell research to succesfully make sperm! That is a major problem for men. If you make scientific discovery and use it to create something that involves procreation, life, and letting a certain gender go into extinction,Chances are your'e not just distroying humanity, you're distroying the laws of nature!
@359lillian Well - the Y chromosome is dying out (apparently) and this breakthrough (if humans dont evolve to cope with it) may be the only thing that can keep the human species going. Not that im justifying it - but you need to look at the facts - they are not going to mass produce sperm - that is just absurd - why would a male scientist create his own destruction - but now we know if something does happen to the human race then there is a chance of recovery - if there is no other alternative.
I like how a song about stem cell research has now turned to a debate over the war in iraq (and the dickhead who said saddam hussien killed more people obviously is a liberal retard)
i don't agree with stem cell research.... just like the lyrics say, "what justifies taking life to save life?". and i mean that in a embryo sense, not a life saving sense cop on duty sense.
But the US army has been taking lives from people of Iraq and other countries for so long, and the government justifies that it is to protect American people's lives. Doesn't it just sound like "taking life to save life"? The same conservative people (Republicans specially) who support the war are against steam cell research. Isn't it "controvertial"?
Even after invading Iraq and occupying the country for years, the cost in human lives wasn't even half that of the innocent lives lost just under Saddam's rule (literally not even half, look it up!). You need to look around at the world and see how brutal it can be before you start pointing fingers at the United States.
@specialguy1911 Just because one party has taken more lives than another does not make the party any less guilty. The fact that he killed twice as many people as the United States' army in the amount of time that they were there won't bring the lives of the murdered people back from the dead. poptic's point still stands, the death caused was 'justified' with the cause of saving lives; which is taking life to save life.
In the 40's, Hitler was charging against the world. The world was just definding itself. This comparison is an absurd! Furthermore, the USA has supported dictators in Latin America since the end of the WWII. The attacks to Iraq can only be justified as a search for oil and money money money to the War Industry, still going on even during the crises which started and 2009. And I'm not pointing fingers to American people, but to that country's big companies and government.
Excellent rebuttal! Just because the United States DIDN'T make any money and DIDN'T take any oil, that's NO reason at all not to cling to those views! ;)
You talk about Hitler as if he overtly stated his intentions to everyone. When in fact, he was a devious, political double speaker and propagandist just like Hussein and his neighbor Ahmedinijad. With your charming level of naivety, you probably would've fallen face first for it. No offense, you seem like a nice guy.
You're mixing up "The Great Debate" with "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" (the song). The title track is 43 minutes long, but this is not the title track.
I listened to this once when I was very high on MDMA and it was very meaningful. It definitely struck a chord with me, so to speak, and I think I actually began to appreciate Dream Theater that night.. Props to ecstasy and Dream Theater :)
all this stuff isnt about god or no god or whatever, we need the diseases to regulate the human race because we are already overpopulated and we dont have enough food and other resources to feed everyone in the world adequitely (dunno how to spell that) so if these diseases are cured them the worlds population wil increase making poverty and starvation increase.. it will not be good. and i have lost people from cancer and shit so im not just being an ass, it just is to dangerous i think.
@FeatherOFLead1 Actually those diseases are there to control the population, like HIV/AIDS, man made virus, made for bio-warfare and to controll the masses. It was spread in Africa and Middle East first, to keep those people 3rd world. "Robert Gallo the man who created aids" search that on youtube. Shocking.
if god wanted someone dead for one reason or another, theyd be dead. we'd have absolutely no control over it. who lives or dies isnt in our control. ofcourse we can influence life and death but it is ultimately beyond us.
i like how everyone is trying to force religion and science to contradict each other. in fact i dont think either should be viewed without the other. But as it says, isn't using these embryos much more useful then throwing them away??
The people who stop this research for the beliefs of their gods, they aren't the one's who have to suffer without the use of their limbs, or knowing you have a terminal illness. The cures to these diseases must be researched and found. FORGET RELIGION, if it was the religious people about to die, they would beg for the cure to be given to them.... How can they can they watch innocent people die, and deprive them years of their life, just because people believe in something that others do not....
Harvesting existence Only to destroy Carelessly together We are sliding Someone else's future Four days frozen still Someone else's fate We are deciding Miracle potential Sanctity of life Faced against each other We're divided
Harvesting existence Only to destroy Carelessly together We are sliding Someone else's future Four days frozen still Someone else's fate We are deciding Miracle potential Sanctity of life Faced against each other We're divided
The modern pinnacle of medical science, stem cell research, requires life taken/harvested to create/save life. So the understanding is that it takes life to create life. In creation, God was life that was used to create life. Death entered the world through original sin and reigned for ~4,033 years until the sacrifice of Jesus' life gave give life to those who believe in Him........ Sounds like modern science is in accordance with God's law......
@NailsForDinner Yes, I am aware :) They can come from skin, etc. But the point is that is comes from existing life. I've even heard stems cells can be synthetically created in a labratory through chemical reactions. But even so, is that not the scientist (Life) creating a stem cell (life)?
Let's Play! The pursuit of science itself is the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of God. Lets take.... Stem cells for example! Which some might say is the modern pinnacle of medical science. Stem cells have to come from life, weather skin or a fetus, or whatever. The life taken from existing life is then used to create or save life. That's odd.... It takes life to save/create life....
By the way for future reference should anyone want to argue or discuss religion and views with me, please inbox me in future (a bit hypocritical) but i don't want to the fill the chat to much more on such a great song :) i apologise profusely to those annoyed :)

@cgmsdh Next he'll suggest we bomb the middle east and bring world piece.
Also I like how this song has nothing to do with either of those diseases.

@rbx01x Uh, stem cells aren't necessarily obtained through taking someone's life away, you know that right?
NailsForDinner 8 months ago
@NailsForDinner Yes, I am aware :) They can come from skin, etc. But the point is that is comes from existing life. I've even heard stems cells can be synthetically created in a labratory through chemical reactions. But even so, is that not the scientist (Life) creating a stem cell (life)?
rbx01x 8 months ago
@rbx01x True, but that's a stretch. I guess I got the wrong vibe from your comment, sorry man.

@rbx01x Kinda sounds like your a religious nut job. no offense buddy.

6:51 Every time I hear it, I think of the bridge to Lifting Shadows off a Dream! Anyone else notice how similar they are?

By the way for future reference should anyone want to argue or discuss religion and views with me, please inbox me in future (a bit hypocritical) but i don't want to the fill the chat to much more on such a great song :) i apologise profusely to those annoyed :)

Religion is nothing more than a man-made vehicle that serves to help guide people through life. Some people do good with it; others don't.
Anyway ... good song. :)

Lyrics on this album are freaking awesome, first entire album to actually stand out lyrics-wise since I&W or Awake.
