  • This song is the reason i miss Mike Portnoy. I'm trying to learn this but its so hard, if i knew how to play drums well and knew the drum parts for this song, it would make learning this on guitar way easier. Not even Tool can comprehend the time signatures in this song. The time signatures in this song is like Mind Fuck in a good way!!!! *)

  • I can actually hear the bass guitar more in this song than every song ever made. Also i looked at the tabs for this song and it has some trippy riffs. Actually this song has the most interesting riffs I've ever heard in my life! *)

  • I like how nobody argues over ProLife/ProAbortion on a DT video!

  • i spent the best 2 hours ever learning this song.

  • Holy Shit Mike Portnoy on those hi-hats are just making me melt :S !!!

  • music skips at like 6:20 wth. >_<

  • Master piece!!!

  • Love the bass blasts at 2:28.

  • We were talking about stem cells in biology class today and it reminded me of this song

  • Geeze... not only did Dream Theater pull off a song about stem cell research, but they seem to never once take a side. It emphasizes that there ARE two views, and both need to be considered throughout. It would have been so easy to just support one side... but they show us both. Bravo.

  • @SwiftrunnerXXY and that is the way to make a successful argument in which the reader, or in this case the listener, comes to their own conclusion and view point on the subject in discussion.

  • I need a bass tab for this!!!

  • them and Tool are the most all-around musically tallented bands I've ever heard

  • @cgmsdh If someone thought liberal = retard, then it'd be meaningless for him to call somebody a "liberal retard". I don't get why do at least 25 people (at this moment) find your comment relevant.

  • 4:59 Forty Six and Two by Tool...what an influence! \,/

  • @perrottafamily1 i couldn t agree more!!just obvious:)

  • the best song of history ...with mike portnoy, no dude.the best disc.

  • I've seen this song live.Now,I can rest in peace.Seriously,what a trip.

  • MIKEPORNTOY is the biggest troll in dream theater vidoes. I dont even care anmore and neither should any real Dream Theater fans.

  • 11:29 best chord progression ever, something unexplainable about it, i can't even

  • 4:29 - 4:47 Dream Theater had a Tool moment.

  • This song is influenced by too many Tool songs...

  • @Brom24 Aye. Portnoy's playing a bit before 2:40 always reminds me of Danny Carey.

  • Not sure if this song is supportive towards stam cell research or against it.

  • @NickBolland It allows you to form your own opinion. That is the beauty of this song.

  • *like*

  • Sounds liek a cross between Camel, Rush and Pink Floyd

  • Petrucci's a fag for writing a 14 minute song on stem cell research and not even taking a stand.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY I smell troll. It smells vile.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY Why are you on every dream theater video I see? Go to hell.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY it's actually a song about morality debate of stem cell research, thank you

  • @MlKEPORNTOY agreed..what a pussy lol

  • Epic!!!!

  • 10:00- 11:30 is the definition of Legen(wait for it)dary

  • You song skips at about 6:27. Might want to re-upload after checking the media you used.

  • 6:28... anoying bug

  • Oh bollocks! I accidentaly hit the dislike button. It was a genuine mistake... A stupid mistake, admittedly but a mistake nonetheless. Does anybody know if I can undo it? Either way - please accept my sincerest apologies, I'll be more careful in future.

  • @xstevie666 ahahahahah ok ok xD

  • 9:53 - 11:15 Favourite segment of music ever out of anything...

  • I swear it skips at 6.29

  • @pinkrabbithappiness I noticed that too

  • Stem Cell research is the most advanced medical movement since peniclian!

  • this sounds a lot like tool :D i like it

  • @04:07 "RUN TO THE HIIIIILS"

    ...wait no...

  • Dear god, I love this song

  • Huge thanks for uploading the song!

  • this reminds me of Tool

  • @ShefMastaRyan Agreed ^^

  • @ShefMastaRyan it even follows a 7/8 - 5/8 beat just like schizm :P and his voice and pattern is just like tool !

  • @tonyvice6661616 okay, Schism sounds NOTHING like this song. If you think so you're stupid. Tool is fucking awesome, Dream Theater is fucking awesome. You're only trying to piss people off. TROLL. They might share similar qualities but my goodness where on earth are you hearing Schism in this?

  • @Poonard Tools lateralus was one of the albums used as inspiration for this album.

  • @shredfix1993 i understand that...but that doesn't mean anyone can just say "oh they copied Tool" far different styles and sounds. Both of these bands are incredible and I'm all about giving credit where credit is due. Dream Theater created a masterpiece with this album and Lateralus is a masterpiece too.

  • @Poonard i agree, a key example is on scenes from a memory, they used OK Computer as one of their influencing albums, and i reckon it doesn sound anything like radiohead!

  • I was a minute and fifty seconds into the song when I realized, I could be watching this in a higher quality.

    :OOOOOOOO

  • @MyMytalMajesty That's awesome! It's too bad I live in Minnesota since I looked at their tour dates and they're not gonna play here this tour so that sucks.

  • Fates Warning had a little obsession going too on that Disconnect record

  • their toolest song after Home .they had that thing about 46&2

  • Comment removed

  • I never get tired of the bass intro. I was hoping they'd play this last year when I saw them, but the only song they played from this album was an extended version of Solitary Shell which more than made up for it ^^

  • Saw these guys play this last night.

    Quite possibly the greatest thing.

    Ever.

  • I love the way dream theater put the question in front of you without taking a side and let your mind burn with thoughts. I think that the great debate is not only if we should or shouldn't use stem cells - Science just made we find once again a much older philosophical debate. It's about what can we call alive and what we can call human.

  • this reminds me of 46 & 2. anyone else with the same opinion?

  • @nikolas99t yes the same riff at some point. ahahah

  • @nikolas99t It has kind of a tool vibe... but if you want to hear some DT stuff that's just like 46 & 2 just chek out "Home", in Scenes From a Memory... the intro sounds just like Tool's...

  • @BrianWilson720 Holy shit let me correct myself, I just heard the part about 5 minutes into the song, it's exactly like 46 & 2 hahahaha...

  • @BrianWilson720 indeed, home's intro has a 46&2 feeling. not weird since portnoy has said that tool is one of their major influences for both of these albums.

  • 480p Wins

  • So this is what happens when Dream Theater writes a Tool song. I like it

  • Comment removed

  • My favorite song of the album :)

  • I've heard that a male scienctist had a breakthough in the lab using stem-cell research to succesfully make sperm! That is a major problem for men. If you make scientific discovery and use it to create something that involves procreation, life, and letting a certain gender go into extinction,Chances are your'e not just distroying humanity, you're distroying the laws of nature!

  • @359lillian Well - the Y chromosome is dying out (apparently) and this breakthrough (if humans dont evolve to cope with it) may be the only thing that can keep the human species going. Not that im justifying it - but you need to look at the facts - they are not going to mass produce sperm - that is just absurd - why would a male scientist create his own destruction - but now we know if something does happen to the human race then there is a chance of recovery - if there is no other alternative.

  • @159Atko Good point.

  • 5 people are justified...as fools.

  • @DarqTalonAzel mayber they are members of Tool. justified.

  • skips at 6:29 :(

  • I like how a song about stem cell research has now turned to a debate over the war in iraq (and the dickhead who said saddam hussien killed more people obviously is a liberal retard)

  • @iansayfol

    Being a liberal =/= being a retard.

  • @cgmsdh Think you could throw the lyrics into the description?

    Would be much appreciated :)

  • @iansayfol i'd think conservatives would think that, thus justifying the invasion...

  • i don't agree with stem cell research.... just like the lyrics say, "what justifies taking life to save life?". and i mean that in a embryo sense, not a life saving sense cop on duty sense.

  • @panamajr7

But the US army has been taking lives from people of Iraq and other countries for so long, and the government justifies that it is to protect American people's lives. Doesn't it just sound like "taking life to save life"? The same conservative people (Republicans specially) who support the war are against steam cell research. Isn't it "controvertial"?

  • @popotic

Even after invading Iraq and occupying the country for years, the cost in human lives wasn't even half that of the innocent lives lost just under Saddam's rule (literally not even half, look it up!). You need to look around at the world and see how brutal it can be before you start pointing fingers at the United States.

  • @specialguy1911 Just because one party has taken more lives than another does not make the party any less guilty. The fact that he killed twice as many people as the United States' army in the amount of time that they were there won't bring the lives of the murdered people back from the dead. poptic's point still stands, the death caused was 'justified' with the cause of saving lives; which is taking life to save life.

  • @flait7

So since people have to die in order to stop dictators and mass murderers.... We should never do it?? :/

I'm glad people like you weren't in charge in the 40's...

  • @specialguy1911

In the 40's, Hitler was charging against the world. The world was just definding itself. This comparison is an absurd! Furthermore, the USA has supported dictators in Latin America since the end of the WWII. The attacks to Iraq can only be justified as a search for oil and money money money to the War Industry, still going on even during the crises which started and 2009. And I'm not pointing fingers to American people, but to that country's big companies and government.

  • @popotic

Excellent rebuttal! Just because the United States DIDN'T make any money and DIDN'T take any oil, that's NO reason at all not to cling to those views! ;)

You talk about Hitler as if he overtly stated his intentions to everyone. When in fact, he was a devious, political double speaker and propagandist just like Hussein and his neighbor Ahmedinijad. With your charming level of naivety, you probably would've fallen face first for it. No offense, you seem like a nice guy.

  • @popotic yes it is, also hypocritical.

  • who the F_ _ K dislikes this song? probably jealous of the all around genius around it!!!!

  • @andreougr

Probably someone pissed of at the 6:28 thingy.

  • I love the way when Rudess makes it look like a distortion in Labrie´s voice at 4:48

  • 11:15 - 11:20 Should sound when Mario gets a star.

  • @987monkeyman Yess, haha

  • @987monkeyman Not even Mario would be able to handle the awesomeness of that riff

  • @987monkeyman if that sound when mario gets a star every fucking koopa would turn inside-out

  • This is interesting music. So much more thought and musical expression go into this than 98 % of the stuff you normally hear.

  • that's one of the best solos ever..can t wait to hear it live in Greece!

  • @DescentFromHeaven

You're mixing up "The Great Debate" with "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" (the song). The title track is 43 minutes long, but this is not the title track.

  • Like no.300 :D

  • LIFE TO SAVE LIFE!

  • @perrottafamily1 Turning away would be a terrible mistake

  • OH Damn i was in the top comments of this video xD

  • Thank you! Those of us with handicaps and have a real need for good stem cell research, appreciate your upload!!@!!

  • @Beadbud5000

    My pleasure.

  • @cgmsdh did you screw up when tried to put the full song on there

  • Thank you! Those of us with handicaps and have a real neded for good stem cell research, appreciate your upload!!@!!

  • why is there a glitch in one of the choruses? sorry, I'm being a complaining bitch, but in the words of popeye "I am what I am"

  • @OfficialTSC

Because I attained this file VIA less-than-legal methods, and this is what I got for that...

  • @cgmsdh you should buy the album and support the band. Just sayin.

  • @dbvideoinc

Oh trust me, I've supported them, too.

I have a few CD's and some of their DVD's.

  • all this stuff isnt about god or no god or whatever, we need the diseases to regulate the human race because we are already overpopulated and we dont have enough food and other resources to feed everyone in the world adequitely (dunno how to spell that) so if these diseases are cured them the worlds population wil increase making poverty and starvation increase.. it will not be good. and i have lost people from cancer and shit so im not just being an ass, it just is to dangerous i think.

  • @FeatherOFLead1 Actually those diseases are there to control the population, like HIV/AIDS, man made virus, made for bio-warfare and to controll the masses. It was spread in Africa and Middle East first, to keep those people 3rd world. "Robert Gallo the man who created aids" search that on youtube. Shocking.

  • WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

    ARGUMENTS! SO MUCH FUN!

  • Oh dear.

So many people agumenting on here....

  • @boilingpoint3

It's the internet, and that's kinda good what it's for...

  • @cgmsdh

yeah,(i don't wanna sound rude) but almost 70% of all comments are absolute nonsense.... :-))

  • Comment removed

  • Is that a trollface?

  • @boilingpoint3

    nevermind...

  • if god wanted someone dead for one reason or another, theyd be dead. we'd have absolutely no control over it. who lives or dies isnt in our control. ofcourse we can influence life and death but it is ultimately beyond us.

  • i like how everyone is trying to force religion and science to contradict each other. in fact i dont think either should be viewed without the other. But as it says, isn't using these embryos much more useful then throwing them away??

  • It is "The Great Debate" for a reason

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @kaboose1994 because it's a debate?

  • The people who stop this research for the beliefs of their gods, they aren't the one's who have to suffer without the use of their limbs, or knowing you have a terminal illness. The cures to these diseases must be researched and found. FORGET RELIGION, if it was the religious people about to die, they would beg for the cure to be given to them.... How can they can they watch innocent people die, and deprive them years of their life, just because people believe in something that others do not....

  • Harvesting existence Only to destroy Carelessly together We are sliding Someone else's future Four days frozen still Someone else's fate We are deciding Miracle potential Sanctity of life Faced against each other We're divided

  • are you justified are you justified are you justified justified taking life to save life

life to save life life to save life

  • 3 people turned away.

  • 12:29 sounds sad

  • i wish they had a great debate video that 13:46 not 13:41

  • what if someone said promise lies ahead

  • Are you justified in taking life to save life?

  • Just fucking cure HIV/AIDS and cancer already!

  • @Btyson2121

    Yes, because it's that simple.

  • @cgmsdh Next he'll suggest we bomb the middle east and bring world piece.

Also I like how this song has nothing to do with either of those diseases.

  • @cgmsdh is there another great debate video that doesn't skip Don't be frightened of the shadows it creates

  • The modern pinnacle of medical science, stem cell research, requires life taken/harvested to create/save life. So the understanding is that it takes life to create life. In creation, God was life that was used to create life. Death entered the world through original sin and reigned for ~4,033 years until the sacrifice of Jesus' life gave give life to those who believe in Him........ Sounds like modern science is in accordance with God's law......

  • @rbx01x Uh, stem cells aren't necessarily obtained through taking someone's life away, you know that right?

  • @NailsForDinner Yes, I am aware :) They can come from skin, etc. But the point is that is comes from existing life. I've even heard stems cells can be synthetically created in a labratory through chemical reactions. But even so, is that not the scientist (Life) creating a stem cell (life)?

  • @rbx01x True, but that's a stretch. I guess I got the wrong vibe from your comment, sorry man.

  • @rbx01x Kinda sounds like your a religious nut job. no offense buddy.

  • 6:51 Every time I hear it, I think of the bridge to Lifting Shadows off a Dream! Anyone else notice how similar they are?

  • This song just shows how DT can do an amazing song even with such a controversial subject. I love this band. XD

  • @ 04:48, am I the only one thinking Tool?

  • @Jeoandrg Nope. Forty Six & Two?

  • @Jeoandrg not the only one!

  • @Jeoandrg yeah, The Great Debate is totally Tool.

  • GEORGE W BUSH.

    I couldn't help it.

    Great song.

  • We may play God, but God Petrucci may shred us to death aswell!

  • Finally a video without douchebags trying to get thumbs up by saying stupid shit about Justin Bieber.

  • By the way for future reference should anyone want to argue or discuss religion and views with me, please inbox me in future (a bit hypocritical) but i don't want to the fill the chat to much more on such a great song :) i apologise profusely to those annoyed :)

  • Religion is nothing more than a man-made vehicle that serves to help guide people through life. Some people do good with it; others don't.

    Anyway ... good song. :)

  • the lyrics in this song are fucking angry. Amazing!

  • Are You Justified In Taking Life To Save Life?

Lyrics on this album are freaking awesome, first entire album to actually stand out lyrics-wise since I&W or Awake.

  • if rush and tool procreated this would be the result....o yeah.....
