@QuelDr0ma The fictional MiG-31 Firefox is an original design for this film. The SU-35 came long after. In 1982 even the SU-35's predecessor SU-27 had not entered service. In fact, a plane that would really be called MiG-31 entered service coincidentally in 1982, but it was not seen by Western observers till years later. If the filmmakers had knowledge of new Soviet aircraft they would have given this fictional MiG-31 a higher number.
i was six years old, this scene sent chills up my spin when i watched it in the theater with my dad. for any conscious survivor of the cold war... cheers.
The Maurice Jarre gives the FireFox large scope of its menacing size!
Ive watched this film many times on DVD in six-track Dolby stereo with split-surrounds that just roar all around on x12 surrounds! The fucking anti-missiles are bad ass on that jet fighter that takes out the Russian helicopters KABOOM!
I am just rereading Firefox and except for the description of the Mig (and maybe Clint being a bit more noticeable than the character in the book) it seems to be on of the most faithful adaptations ever!
Why is it I get the feeling theres a conspiracy here to keep us the public from owning a score from this film. And six-track Dolby 5.1 on DVD audio would be huge highlight, stuff two channel.
THAT. IS. DARTH VADER'S. RIDE!!

I remember reading a few years ago when I was looking for a copy, that the original master recordings were lost in a fire back in the late 80's

Those song wouldn't have been released on a soundtrack... It'd have been on the score.
Which you might be able to sage if you're good enough.
