i absolutely love the graceful movements put into the hula. it looks very simple, but takes practice to really nail down. the way the dancers in the video danced it, it looked like it took no effort at all. they made it look easy from the swaying of the hips to the hand movements. because of this video, i am actually taking an interest in hula.
Oh my goodness, the hula is SOOO beautiful!!! The movements are so graceful, and did you see that look on concentration on the dancers faces? Very disciplined, because I know as soon as I got the hang of the dance moves, I would've been grinning like a Chesire cat X-D Very lovely. I dont know how i'm going to find hula classes in Chicago. . .but I'll do my best!!
he taught my kumu how to dance and he is an inspiration.... he gave us special permission to do he mele no lilo:) we carry on his style of hula... with the flat footed steps as well:)
Sure you can there´s no age limit to learn hula :D if you have the dessiere to dance.
But as any other sport, dance etc you need to prctice. As Kumu Mark says " is you only dance a couple of hours a week, you´ll look like a couple of hours dancer"
with enough practice she will be good no matter what age she starts. The two most forgiving dances that can be learned at any age is hula and bellydance.
I am in awe over this video! I've seen it time and time again at the end of Lilo and Stitch as my daughter replays it to try and learn the dance. lol She is only 8 but she wants to be able to do this dance at her next talent show. Good thing it's not til next year, but her heart is in the place. Her and her friends are practicing every day and for now they are learning the basic steps. L8er the hands! lol I have loved all kinds of hula since I can remember. AWESOME JOB ON THIS VIDEO MARK! MAHALO
8 is a good age to learn any dance form! Why don't you find her some lessons? I'm sure she'd love them - she's already inspired and her mom loves the dance too. What a great way to start! :)
if anyone knows of any classes where i can learn this and any other dances id be grateful i live in london by the way and all the classes ive found are in the usa :(
@babycham86 I would suggest that you look for either Cook Island hula classes or Tahitian. Cook Island and Tahitian hula are a slight variance of one another but still carry the same foundations of what is installed into the Hawaiian hula i.e. the use of hand gestures and the movement of the lower body. I prefer the Cook Island tamure then Tahitian but that's just my preference. I hope this helps!
I'm not hawaiian, oh well, I'm not even american, but I love and respect Hula. I think it's an amazing dance, like the language and the whole culture, actually.
that was very nice!! maika'i no!! adn that is very interesting how this halau puts ther hands up when they do there baicis...because my halau puts there hands on there hips instead. it is very cool to see all off the different styles of hula!!
I just must to comment about this someone else´s culture talk... I love to listen and dance tango (Argentina), samba (Brazil), fado (Portugal), hula (Hawaii) and so many other music and dances from all over the wold. I`m not from any of those cultures, but still I can and have right to enjoy listening and dancing those music and dances - why not? With all respect music is universal and so is dancing too. And lets dance, how about merengue, salsa or polka ;)
Hey does anyone know how I can download a video like this. I have a project to do on Hawaiian culture and I would love to be able to show this rich culture to other so they to can be enlightened......please help me.
Do a websearch for a YouTube to iPod video download program. The one I use converts to mp4 if I recall correctly. I use another video conversion program to comvert it to mpg. Of course, I can't use the program names here, but a search should make it obvious.

I really want to learn Hula, it's one of the most beautiful dances I've ever seen...
But the next school where you can learn Hula is nearly 100 km from my home so...
I have to wait and learn first (my beloved) belly dance, and when I'm living near a school where someone teaches Hula I can learn

just wondering........can u still learn a dance and be good at it if u start at 12?? my cousin wants to start and she is 12.
Will she still be able to dance good if she learns now?
xXDenverXx1 2 years ago 3
Probably. It depends on how dedicated she is to it. And if she's willing to have enough patience to become a terrific dancer.
cocacolagrrrl1234 2 years ago
yea she is dedicated all right! She loves to dance. Thanks for answering ma comment ;)

I started when I was 12, all need is dedication and 12 is still young, so she will be able to pick things up fast
