Honestly i find Jerry rly authentic :) I love the way he plays and i dont understand how ppl keep telling he is not bernard edwards. Of he is not bernard , but who said he had to be ? He is good, and i love hearing him playing ;)
@JustusFriedolin My comment meant that I loved his sound!!! I mean the fact that he's playing a Fender Jazz Bass means that it's even better. I just really prefer Fender Jazz Basses over any other bass. His sound is good!
@JazzBass7 but its a suhr J style bass ..thats what i meant.. you cant tell by the headstock and the slightly different shape. they make very high quality basses aswell though. maybe now you understand me better. greets. hes got great sound indeed
@JustusFriedolin Ooooohhhhh!!!! I understand. Haha, I didn't look at the headstock or anything. I'm fairly still new at bass but Suhr J basses are awesome!!! But yes, I understand you now. Thank you for clearing that up for me!

Whew....somebody open up a window, light a match and get the air freshener!!!! It got stone FUNKY in here!!!! Those brothers FUNKED it up!!!! LOVE IT!!!!
Whew! If we were worried that Niles couldn't find a bassist worthy to replace the late great Bernard Edwards, I guess we shouldn't worry anymore. This Jerry Barnes is a bad man.
I've just finished a remix of the superb Chic song "I Want Your Love". Please have a listen and I hope you enjoy (Although it doesn't have the outrageous funk of this)...
this is funny because in the dvd he talks about bernard being from NC and this jerry guy from there...I am also a bass player from Winston salem NC...i started in orchestra in 85...i grew up on soul train..funk dance and new wave and nile was SO tied into all those pockets....as a baby i loved chic and as a preteen duran duran..madonna..powerstation..love that stuff and it seems im the only one in clveland that still loves it! lol
This was great! The bassist is truly funky! Of course he isn't Nard, but he shouldn't try to be...Nard was awesome and had his own style and is truly missed, but I have to give my brother bassist his due! He and Nile kicked the funk in the pants on this groove!
This design is made in 1962 by C.L.F. under the Name Fender Jazz Bass. In these days nearly every guitarcompany build this model in a better or more bad way. But I'm sure about, the sadowsky basses made in a good quality. I think they use selected wood and the headstock is a little different. Thank you
im 35 and im very familier with chic.replacing bernard edwards in any sense of the term is impossible..I like Nile because he is still out there playing giving people a good time and making it an event..the man has done damn well considering the ups and downs in his life..if there was no bernardedwards then they may have never been a john taylor as a bass player..when i heard duran duran and wham as a kid it made me want to pick up bass..long live john taylor and deon estus RIP bernard edwards!
Nile said after Bernard passed he never even thought about playing another Chic song. That was until Jerry Barnes called him up and told Niles if you ever play Chic music again he wanted to play. Nile said himself after 5 minutes of hearing Jerry he hired him on the spot...
I'm sorry but IMHO that slap technique on the bass is all too generic and overused and it does not make up for true talent. Chic's original bassist, Bernard Edwards rarely slapped and popped his bass yet had a rich style that is hard to follow and helped make Chic what Chic was. Slapping the bass should be like hot sauce on a taco, not the taco itself. It should be like "garnish" relative to normal bass playing, otherwise it gets cheesy real fast. Like a song full of clavinet, it gets old fast.
Let´s not get all sour and frustrated here ;)This is a solo feature dude, not a song.. This ís the hot sauce on the taco! I have seen better solo´s though..
I agree wholeheartedly, Thopter; Bernard plucked with the first two fingers mostly, he only slapped as an accent to the previous note. The bassline to "Good Times" is sheer virtuosity...PEACE.
Nile has his clique and he's very good at what he does.I think you're taking it a little too serious mkdrum. They're just jamming, not competing with LJ and PJ. and the do rock the house. PJ is an exellent guitarist. I wish i could play like him, but everyone does what they do best. There's no competion here. Everyone has there own favorite.
I gotta admit I was in a funk --- sorry --- and missing me good ol fashion authentic Chic groove! Hey I love Nile too, he's the reason I play a Strat. It's just this "jam" seems more fun to play than to listen to.
mkdrum....if you listen to any of chic old stuff...you note that Nile Rodgers always kept in the rhythm pocket with his solos...he's from the disco era not funk and thrashing and slashing just wasn't way we played because dancing to our music was the thing we wanted and a whaling guitar solo was just out of place.....Damn I miss those days...Are you a drummer?
