expends energy and talent on promotion instead of quality or innovation, serves only the most powerful financially endowed corporations who can afford it, and most importantly,... wastes people's time = inefficient.

This is an example. For more examples, watch TV and get 26 minutes from every hour devoted to brainwashing.

Some intelligent people, perhaps such as yourself, recognize advertising is not "Truth" as you say. It provides jobs, yes. However those jobs do not create real goods or direct services, only the indirect service of fueling artificial wants. Further, many people do come to believe advertising as a form of consumerist truth which only deepens the divide between actual needs and rampant consumer lust. Either way, it is still a waste of resources.
