nice plane but i like the EF2000 more, its alot more agile and without the expensive und "useless2 stealth thing. Even french made iraqi radar and british radar during operation iraqi freedom could detect the F117 Nighthawk on their radar's. There was an interesting article in the newspaper over this. The EF2000 produced after 2011 will be added with thrust vectoring from a spanish/German company. I like both planes and thankfully they will only strike against terrorists or kind of.

If you honestly think stealth is useless after it has proven itself with THOUSANDS of sorties in Iraq... something is wrong with you. Try going over Baghdad with over 100 AA missile sites, and guns at one time with a normal aircraft... YOU CAN'T!

there were reports and interviews, even from bbc. Try to search with google for it. Stealth has proven itself with outdated radar systems, which 3rd world countrys or east european countrys often use. Against the newest generation of chinese,russian or west european radars it is not proven at all.There are also others ways to detect stealth, be creative and search the internet for it, i wont do this for you :)

People have this misconception that stealth makes an plane totally oblivious to enemy threat radars but that is simply not the case. Its a combination of tactics, support from electronic warfare platforms like the E/A-6 and good intel that make a stealth plane effective and survivable in combat. The idea reduced detection and avoidance.

A stealth aircraft can be detected, but its very difficult compared to conventional aircraft. The general ideal is that you have to be very close to pick up a stealth aircraft on radar. Its the pilots intel that keeps him from steering his aircraft directly into a SAM sight. Radar jamming support doesnt hurt either

As a former F117 Avionics Tech... I attest that stealth does work; The proper terminology is "Low Observable" - so no... it isn't invisible. However it is very effective with proper tactics. F117s have flown many of times into harms way without ECM capability and the enemy didn't know what hit them. When in peacetime and training they have "Enhancers" installed on the sides of the fuselage to increase their radar cross section for air traffic purposes.

My initial job title and training was as a F16 Attack Control Systems tech but I was cross-trained into F117s as soon as I graduated tech school and got to Holloman AFB. I did not re-enlist so F117s are all I ever worked on apart from training on F16s during tech. It is my understanding that if I had stayed in, my next station would have been Korea to work on F16s and then back to Holloman after that tour. If I would have been a "lifer", I could have very well been a "Raptor Keeper" today. :)

The F-22 would be a great airshow machine if everyone ponyed up the $150k a head its taking to operate these suckers; white collar welfare, keep those engineers driving escalades and pilots getting laid while the real work is being done by guys in humvees and robots in UAV. lets get real and stop building this bullshit.

Tinito16, there are figures of around 31k lbs for the empty weight of the Raptor but the official "empty" weight is "40,000 pound class" so if you assume a fuel fraction of 30% then you get a figure of around 60k lbs which matches the accepted take-off weight nicely !

If you go by official figures then -

wing area = 838 ft²

take off weight = 60,000 lbs

wing loading ( lb/ft²) = 71.6

Thats a realistic figure to go by compared to around 73~74 lb/ft² for F15C and around 63~64 lb/ft² for the Eurofighter Typhoon ...

The official empty weight ie. - fuel, armaments etc is listed as being 40,000 pound class. If you then work out the minimum fuel ratio the F22 should have 0.30 then you come to 60,000 lbs for 100% fuel and no armaments.

Don't understand why you think that it's probably got a MTOW of about 80k lbs, with air to air load it will without a doubt be able to go ballistic !

Does anyone here know the actual Wing loading of the Raptor? I've read anything from 66lbs/sq ft to 80 lbs/sq ft. I dont know why every source I come up with seems to have a different wing loading. I did the calculations myself (from info provided in wikipedia) and came up with the 66 lbs/sq ft wing loading. But I don't know that's factual. So does anyone who has any authority on this know?

I think some people rag on the F-22, due to jealousy. I'm Irish, our most advanced aircraft is a prop-powered Pilatus PC-90 and I have no problem admitting the F-22 is a friggin' triumph, so I just don't count.

But people from Countries other than the UK, US and Ireland might have a problem admitting that their Sukhoi's and MiG's (although beautiful and lethal) aren't in the spotlight anymore. The F-22 is awesome and I think some people just need to come to terms with that.
