  • "tu madre es loca = she is crazy and…" correct translation weykmanfr.

"tu madre está loca" (note that "esta" is different to "está").

    "esta"= this one

    "está"= (she, he, it) is

so, "tu madre esta loca" could be translated as : "your mother, this crazy woman…"

instead of "tu madre está loca" as: she's crazy now but…" as weymanfr said before.

  • in the Spanish dub, insted of SPanish, mrs Kay taught Rachel some Portuguese, same in the Italian dub, Paolo is Spanish and when rachels shoe goes into the mud at Nana´s funeral (the one where Nana dies twice) she complains about mud all over her expensive shoe from Madrid insted of Rome, and in the French dub, in the One where Joey speaks French, Pheobe tries to teach Him Spanish

  • Me temo que nadie de por aquí domina el español europeo (ni ese ni ninguno). ¿Me equivoco?

  • LOL now that i have had a few years at school learning spanish, i actually understand that! Haha

  • Lol the spanish lady said your mother is crazy

  • "tu madre es loca"

    "such a sweet woman"

    haha i love rachel!

  • tu madre es loca jajjajjajaj la mejor serie de la historia

    "your mother is crazy"

  • here's a grammar mistake in the sentence "Tu madre ES loca"

We have two possible translations for the verb "to be":

    Ser

    Estar

Using one or another depends on many things, but, in this case, they should've used the verb "estar" not "ser". The correct sentence would've been:

    "Tu madre está loca"

  • @MissWhoeverIam i think you're right but it can be 'es' loca right? because the maid wanted to say that her mother is crazy in a longer period of time :P

  • @MrWriter95 Mmm... I think it can't be, actually. You're right about using them both in a specific period of time. For example:

    "Es aburrida" = She's boring.

    "Está aburrida"= She's bored now.

But, with the adjective "loca" you just use "está". However, I think that maybe in South America, México,... they may use it like you said, because the Spanish there is slightly different in some things from the Spanish spoken in Spain, for instance... =)

  • @MissWhoeverIam yeah i'm only familiar with the european spanish :P

  • @MrWriter95 Just like me then =)

That's why it's quite interesting for me watching US series or videos where they speak Spanish... there are many mistakes like this one (the last I've noticed is from Gwyneth Paltrow appearing on Glee... and she speaks european Spanish, so...) =D

  • Tu madre es loca!!!! LMAO...!!!

  • putangina nyo lahat! puro kayo satsat! magchupaan na lang kayo! chupchup mwahmwah!

  • ma mere est une fo... mdr

  • tu madre es loca hahahahaha such a sweet woman hahahahahahaha

  • ''Tu madre es loca.''

    ''Such a sweet woman.''

    Yeah :D

  • ¬¬ hahaha i love it but when you say * tu madre es loca* its wrong xD *Tu madre esta loca* must be xD lol

  • @Lemurri it's ok wether u say "tu madre es loca" or "tu madre esta loca" but the second one sound better, thats all :) my first language is spanish that's why i'm telling u :)

buena suerte en tus clases de español :P

  • @Solniadora jajaja gracias es que soy de Mexico y hablo español :3 ,,, creo que mi Ingles es peor .. pero gracias por el comentario me gusta conocer amantes de friends que compartan mi idioma n_n SALUDOS :D

  • Tu madre es loca = She is crazy and she's always been crazy

Tu madre esta loca= She's crazy now but she wasn't before

  • @weykmanfr Perfecta explicación :D

  • @kaorublue thanks hahaha, and i dont even speak spanish lol, it's the same in portuguese

  • @weykmanfr en verdad muy buena explicacion

  • @weykmanfr not to be an asshole or anything, but you're wrong. it literally translates as "Your mom is crazy" and that's all

  • @POLAROIDSNAP thats because BE is just one in English, In Spanish and other latin languages we BE splits into two different verbs. SER and ESTAR. In English it doesnt really matter. But in Spanish it matters a lot. Tu eres bonita and Tu estas bonita are completely different

  • @weykmanfr well obviously they're different because they both are separate words. And I wasn't talking about the Spanish translation, I was talking about the English translation, which has more (unnecessary) words that aren't in the original Spanish translation.

  • ...... in spanish is: "Tu madre ESTÁ loca"...

  • i miss this song!!

  • haha transcribed its: To my, there's no god

  • actually, she still remembers the spanish her nanny taught her

  • such a sweet woman XD

  • @lalalachachacha0123 i thought the exact same thing. like im not spanish so i didnt really get it until someone explained it to me.

  • how does the audience even know what that means?

  • @lalalachachacha0123 lol second language of US is spanish, like canada and french,

  • @lalalachachacha0123 Why wouldn't they? If you know English, you can figure it out quite easily.

  • @SurenK7 wow they all figured it out very quickly then

  • reading all of the discussion of ser vs. estar, both could be right in different senarios-if the person was saying "your mother is crazy in general" it would be ser, but if it was only in that moment it would be estar-im not fluent in spanish so don't get mad at me but that's what i think!

  • ella es loca

  • @speedguitar88 Both ways is right, I'm from latin america. To be means: Ser (identity, adjective) and ESTAR (places, current condition, mood).... TU MADRE ES LOCA, or TU MADRE ESTÁ LOCA... it means the same after all. THEN STOP DISCUSSING, FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!

  • Can some spanish dude/girl tell us what tu madre es locka(spelling?) means?

  • @GeoOoo7 your mother is crazy. anyway, it's tu madre ESTA loca not ES loca. But well, it's friends so I still luv it XDDD (sorry bad english)

  • @Lanakikuta es lo mismo

  • @Lanakikuta well yes, but she doesnt remember exactly what her nanny said :)

  • @BufasB yeah xDD I luv rachel anyway, i luv all of them jejej xDD

  • i don't speak one word of spanish but i was able to figure out wat this meant, have to say im quite proud of my self, thumbs up if your the same lol xxxx

  • ES, ESTA, QUE IMPORTA.... ELLA NO HABLA ESPAÑOL TODOS LOS DIAS.... CORRIJAN A ALGUIEN QUE SI LO HAGA.... Y COMO ESCRIBIERON POR AHI... QUE NO SOLO LES BASTA REIRSE Y YA

  • Such a sweet woman :D

  • alguien sabe de quetempoarada es este episodio? y dejen de joder por si dice es o esta loca!

  • @elmarron3980 temporada ocho :D

  • ur mother is Shakira

  • XD ur mother is crazy

  • tu madre es loca , y tu madre esta loca , its just the same , theres no difference.

    regards from argentina

  • Je ne parle pas l'anglais ou l'espagnol

  • Jajaja

  • and now i understood this joke! :D

  • lol que utilizó traductor Google para resolver esto? lo que es una pérdida de tiempo :D

  • its not "tu madre esta loca" its "tu madre ES loca"

  • @GuiPedra1212 Actually, it's TU MADRE ESTA LOCA.

  • @TheCoquimartinez should be, but says "es"

  • @TheCoquimartinez No it's Not. I'm Brazilian and I learn spanish in school. If you say "tu madre es loca" it means: your mother IS crazy. So,"tu madre ESTA loca", is not what Rachel says.

  • @GuiPedra1212 "to be" can be translated both as "ser" or "estar" in spanish. The difference is that "estar" is something temporary, and "ser" is something permanent. In spanish we would say "tu madre está loca", sounds much better, although... it's friends! We should just laugh and keep going =)

  • @GuiPedra1212 you can say it either way

  • LMAO!

  • Siempre me parecio muy sexy esa vieja como habla en español, me gustaria saber por que lazan esos detalles en ese capitulo al inicio me acuerdo, estan en un juego el cual Joey va a presentar creo que se llama "embaucado" o algo asi, y le preguntan a Chandler, cual es la capital de Colombia y el responde Bogotá, pero Joey le dice que es Bogóta, pero que se la vale...despues Rachel habla en español se me hizo algo curioso eso, jejeje......

  • Easier language? there's no such thing!

  • What's with all the comments about which language is more difficult to learn? D= None of them are easy (No language is) they "could" be easy if you separate learning a tongue from its culture, and that way you are not learning to speak a language... for it is empty without its context... On the other side, spanish grammar is really complex even for spanish speakers, so no, it's not an easy language...

  • @alixlilix90 it depends on the person actually, i got fluent in italian in 1 year. Spanish, i dont even have to learn the grammar deeply cuz i speak portuguese, so i can figure things out. By the way, i dont know why portuguese speakers can understand spanish even though they dont speak it and spanish speakers have a hard time understanding it. and english took me a bit longer.

  • @weykmanfr porque nós temos nosso jeitinho ;)

  • @weykmanfr I think that also depends on the person, I can understand portuguese and the things I don't fully understand I take them by the context and figure it out... It was somehow easy for me to learn english even though I learned it by myself... French is giving me a hard time though, I love it, is just not easy when you don't have a guide or teacher...

  • @weykmanfr Old, but Spanish and Portuguese are very related languages. Very similar vocab and grammar and everything.

English: When I was in Minnesota, no one spoke Portuguese.

Spanish: Cuando yo era en Minnesota, ningún habló Portugués.

Portuguese: Quando eu era em Minnesota, ninguém falava português.

  • @VanSensei Just correcting.... Spanish: Cuándo yo ESTABA en Minnesota, NADIE HABLAVA Portugués

Portuguese: Quando eu ESTAVA em Minnesota, ninguém falava Português

  • True, but english has some bs grammatical rules. I have no problem following them, its my immigrant grandparents I show concern for. They've been in this country 30 years and they still have trouble speaking the language. They speak it fluently but the accent is heavy duty dominican, and their grammar is always off by several words. Spanish is actually relatively easy to learn when compared to english. In grammar, spanish words all tend to have the same suffixes. English is way more complex bro.

  • @alixlilix90

I'm spanish and i don't think spanish is a difficult language to learn. For example, we don't have phrasal verbs or something similar.

    Bye!

  • @iperez1909 You're only saying that because you are Spanish, I bet if you ask alot of people, they would think it's hard, for example: me, I'm failing my Spanish course :( And I really wanted to learn it, but I'm not getting anything

  • @alixlilix90 theres an actual international rating system of language difficulty. spanish is considered one of the easier language as opposed to japanese which has 3 different writing systems

  • lol XD your mother is crazy

  • in fact spanish is a real easy language to learn for english speakers.for its easy speling and gramer.waht you see you reed.specially if you reed it with spanish accent not latino amerikano.becouse of differente beetween some letters.

i,v learned it in almost 3 mounths.

by the way tray to learn Arabic or Polish to see what is difficult.

spanish speakers must be proude becouse of their reac literature.

  • in fact spanish is a real easy language to learn for english speakers.for its easy speling and gramer.waht you see you reed.specially if you reed it with spanish accent not latino amerikano.becouse of differente beetween some letters.

  • Spanish is sexy

  • The satisfied smile on Rachel's face after she manages to remember it.

  • tu madre es LOCA!! hahaha she actually says the spanish R very well :D

  • *insert comment about spelling error here*

  • The cocky Spanish comments mocking English speakers are exasperating.

  • @TuathaDuOrothrim that is so true... smug lot they are... they're not as good with english as they think anyway. Ha!

  • @CrUithNee Yeah, so true, Spanish people are all cocky and smug, you were lucky you as a Spaniard cause you learned this great language and you can be an exception to that rule. Good contributing to your own stereotypes.

  • @Eilliniel more than Spanish I meant South American (they are the smug lot), in Spain people don't really care how the English speakers pronounce, cos' they know that their own diction in English isn't that good... and that's not even their fault so... xD (I love Spain, hello, I was born there)

  • @CrUithNee Allright, it's only that I don't like making generalizations. The thing is we should just be able to laugh in a good way in both directions cause you know, it's always funny when someone doesn't master a language and is learning it, but from respect of course. I am aware too that most people at least here in Spain don't master English, but I also think this is changing... though slowly. OK, sorry if I was a bit blunt. What I don't like is people who only speak 1 language complaining.

  • @Eilliniel that's ok, I think too that English is getting to more people in Spain, and that's great! & taking into account that the system they use to teach English is pretty bad... OMG

when I went to school/high-school there I knew more than the teacher, for instance. But I also know, from personal experience, that south american immigrants that came to my same school laughed at the other spanish kids cos' they though they were so much better at languages... that was my point LOL

  • @TuathaDuOrothrim Long live stereotypes... Like there's no shows mocking Spanish people speaking your language.

  • ma quanto è bella

  • you mother is crazy...

  • @augustrm721 youR mother is crazy

  • @LxE1993 tu abuela es loca :)

  • @augustrm721 HA Lxe1993's grandma is crazy XD

  • that is so cute! i love her accent!! actually her voice is kinda sexy in spanish lol

  • this wrong it should be "tu madre está loca" still funny

  • @dasophie99 You just copied what the above said.

  • @mupp33n lol, didnt notice that sorry

  • @dasophie99

its not wrong.both of them are correct and has different meaning.

unfortuntly thers no verb to describe diferente between "Ser" and "Estar" in english. both of them are "To be"

  • lol your mom is scatterbrained? wait no...

    lolol

and your grandfather está muerto hahaahaha

  • tu madre es loca :D

  • @MwoniKa Your a retard.

  • @CrabsLover You're a retard for spelling YOU'RE wrong.

  • καλά ό,τι και να κάνετε ελληνικά δεν μπορείτε να μάθετε με τίποτα...

means...whatever you do you can't learn greek

  • I don't speak Spanish, so I'll have to take your word (all of you) that it's incorrect. But remember that Rachel is remembering something she was taught as a child about 20 years ago - even if the writers made an unintentional mistake, it still makes sense that she might not say the phrase correctly.

  • lmao at all the comments about it is incorrect.

    That is WHY it's funny

Plus obviously what it means :P

  • herpes

  • what did she say???

  • @MwoniKa your mom is crazy

  • que manera de discutir guevadas por un capitulo de friends...no pueden solo reirse y ya??

  • @cesardarito estas en lo cierto!!! yo solo quise resaltar lo mucho que me gusta mi idioma y estos gringos se revolucionaron!! friends forever, my favorite show ever!!!

  • From which season is this ?

  • "such a sweet woman" auheuaheuaheuahea

  • It's not Rachel's Highschool Spanish, it's the sentence her old nanny told her when she was working for Rachel's mom. That's the funny thing about it.:D

    Love it!:)

  • Los latinoamericanos no hablamos español; sino castellano latinoamericano con sus diferentes variantes: argentino, chileno, uruguayo, colombiano, peruano, etc. etc. etc. El español sólo se habla en España.

We latin american native speakers don't speak Spanish, guys, but latin american castellano. It's the same thing between you guys and England native speakers. For example, you use "truck" instead of "lorry", or "trash can" instead of "dustbin".

  • @jordan3461 Español y castellano son la misma cosa, revisa la definición en el diccionario, no mal informes. Ademas el Ingles es Ingles en Inglaterra que en USA aunque usen diferentes palabras para definir la misma cosa, a eso se le llama sinónimos. Y no existe aun el argentino o el peruano como idiomas o variantes de un idioma.

  • @hernandez200 Español y castellano NO SON LA MISMA COSA, Y LO QUE OPINE TU DICCIONARIO ES IRRELEVANTE.

Por eso en cualquier academia de inglés del mundo te dicen "Use American English or British English, but you have to be consistent when you choose one". Por eso que es relevante marcar las diferencias: yo, viviendo en Argentina, muchas veces no entiendo lo que dicen los españoles. Inclusive hay ciertos lugares en Latinoamerica donde se habla un castellano que es incomprensible para otros.

  • @hernandez200 Por último, querid@, revisa de nuevo tu diccionario: si buscas "argentino" seguro que te dice "natural de argentina". Si el idioma que hablamos no es natural de mi país, ¿en que idioma hablamos? Español argentino suena medio raro, ¿no? Las variables del castellano en America Latina son absolutamente legítimas, y es válido nombrarlas según el país en donde se hablan. Para finalizar: noto como un cierto deleznable orgullo carpetovetónico en tu comentario.

  • @jordan3461 Argentino es natural de argentina, pero eso no convierte a su idioma en algo particular, no inventes términos, para ganar una discusión en la que sabes que estas mal. No soy española, soy mexicana.

  • what does tu madre es loca mean??!!

  • @avetowagnim123 "Tu madre está loca" means "your mother is crazy"

  • @avetowagnim123 it means "youre mother is crazy" in spanish

  • Comment removed

  • jajajajajajaja

  • jajajajajaja tu madre es loca

  • TU MADRE ES LOCA !!!

hahaha ... .. I love Jennifer Aniston But when talking about both Spanish is so funny!

sorry for my bad English U_U

  • Wow, "tu madre es loca", jaja... y que razon tenia!

  • Rachel rocks(:

  • thanks 2 all that leaves comments saying the English translate!!

  • we know, stop typing what they say just to get thumbs up!! you dont get paid when getting thumbs up

  • I JUST saw this on friends.

  • rachel is hot

  • es divertido ver como el español suele ser tan dificil de aprender para los que hablan ingles, el ingles es mucho mas facil y simple de entender.. me hace sentir orgullosa de mi idioma, que es hermoso.

its funny to see how spanish can be so difficult to learn for english speakers, english is easier to understand and learn.. it makes me feel proud of my lenguage, viva latinoamerica!!!!!

  • @kellita2009 Wrong, English is ten times harder than Spanish. That Americans don't care to learn Spanish and never do is one thing. Spanish doesn't have all the exceptions to the rules as English does and it doesn't mix words from every other language either. It seems like half of English words are Greek in origin for crying out loud.

Tambien hablo Español. No lo digo de ignorancia.

  • @thelordmemnoch eres la primera persona en mi vida que oigo decir tal barbaridad!! el ingles es lo mas sencillo de este mundo de apender, por eso es un idioma universal (entre otras razones) en cambio escucha a un gringo hablando español y te das cuenta de los horrores gramaticales que cometen.. y no es por mal sino porque en realidad les cuesta trabajo.. pero bueno es tu opinion y es respetable :)

  • @thelordmemnoch English may have all those exceptions but still it's easier because you don't have to learn all the forms of the verbs (that vary incredibly much). I'm not saying that you can learn English overnight, it's a language, it's hard, but Spanish, in many people and in my opinion, is harder. I must admit that English is harder in pronunciation.

  • @thelordmemnoch ok, if that solves it, greek is the most difficult language, maybe after chinese :) I speak english and i'm learning spanish(half of the words, i understand them already)

  • @Dimitra1911 Yes you're right! I am half italian and half greek. Since when I was a child my mother always speak greek so that I could learned. Now I only speak greek with my relatives but it's really a difficult language. It takes more than 9 years to learn it very well! But it depens from our language you speak... for me spanish is not so difficult because it looks like italian very much..but I don't think that english is more difficult than spanish...

  • @Keepdreaming0094 so you know ;) well, i totaly agree with you

  • @thelordmemnoch No lo dices "por" ignorancia.

  • @thelordmemnoch alot of english wordshave greek roots...even those who have to do with health and disease!!!ok...say one english word and i 'll tell you the greek root.!!!i'm greek by the way, and believe me it is an amazing language with so many words with great meanings!!!i ve learnd some frensh too, bue spanish, oh i wish i could join a class this year!!By the way ,can anyone translate please what rachel says.?

  • @thelordmemnoch alot of english wordshave greek roots...mostly those who have to do with health and disease!!!ok...say one english word and i 'll tell you the greek root.!!!i'm greek by the way, and believe me it is an amazing language with so many words with great meanings!!!i ve learned some frensh too, but spanish, oh i wish i could join a class this year!!By the way ,can anyone translate please what rachel says.?

  • @demmyk Yes I know and it is funnier cause I just saw that movie for the first time not too long ago. He is right though. There are so many English words that have Greek roots.

  • @demmyk Oh sorry she said, "Your mother is crazy".

  • @kellita2009 jajajaajaja es correcto mil votos

  • @kellita2009 oh really so you know all 16 verb tenses of English? it's not hard to learn Spanish, people just don't care to learn it. Mexicans however die to learn it so they can get a job

  • @tutu1987 como sea!! mi comentario es el mas votado, lo que quiere decir que 35 estan deacuerdo conmigo en que mi idioma español es complejo y un orgullo ser latino :) si tanto sabes español, argumenta tus ideas en este idioma, y demuestrame lo facil que te es hablarlo. ah! y te recomiendo ver el video: one semester of spanish love song jajaja.. hilarious!! sayonara! ;)

  • @kellita2009 well, try to learn GREEK to see whats difficult

Difficult language isn't something to be proud of...not a big deal

  • @PaSxaLak0z thank you for pointing that out

  • @kellita2009 im not an english nor a spanish native speaker...so, i can say that english is probably easier, but spanish is not that difficult either...i mean, i learnt spanish from watching tv, so how difficult can it be;)
