Great video! I would say that the instructor knew what he was doing. I would do the same thing in small increments too considering Detroits are famous for Runaways when the fuel system isnt fully purged of trapped air. Great job!
In about 30 minutes, i am going to go try and start my 8v71. Had its batteries on a trickle charger overnight. its been 5 months. dipstick shows a 3/4 of an inch past the full point. Wish me luck...I have no idea what i am doing.
first time start ups on a detroit r scary...an axe helps to cut the fuel lines....if she starts to run away....got to be fast though....tuff job teaching...somewhere down the road....those young fellers will remember who has helped them the most in life...as fer the haters...well...aint much u can do about them...but they need help too...hahahahaha
@indianguy51 Never heard of the axe to the fuel lines, but we would always have a small piece of plywood on hand to cover up the air intake in case one started to run away.
Hated working on Dogtroits as a youngster, now I look back fondly with nostalgia. Good times.
@Mysterio2276 not in to it hold it over the air inlet ,it works if the engin is in good shape it hey are wore real bad they can suck oil past the ringsadn may even run away , a pice of 3/4 inch ply wood works the best
Sir, I do take criticism from people well. However your use of the English language and punctuation put your intelligence too for me to take any advice from you.
The really aren't spinning at a high rpm...The only reason they sound like they are is because they com bust on every stroke unlike a 4 stroke...which is every other stroke...
So did I! I got a chance to enjoy these engines during my childhood. MARTA had GMCs, Flxibles, and Neoplan N416As with this engine. The loudest ones out of the 3 buses I just typed in were the Neoplans
Also why they are so popular as generators in hospitals and such, they take more kindly to revving from cold, and hospitals need electricity all the time.
I suppose thats true, Detroit Diesel are probably the toughest engines ive ever seen. I have more than a few stories from loggers and such about Detroits than ran for years with whole piston and rod assembelys through the block into the crankcase!! They said "that engine was always a little off"!!
Anyway, I still wouldnt rev a cold engine if I could help it. Just uneccesary wear and tear. personal preferance.
yes, i was talking about GASOLINE small bore 2strokes. If you lug around a detroit or let it idle all day its bound to score cylinders because of oil starvation and cause excessive carbon build up on injector tips, pistons, rings, intake ports at the bottom of the cylinder, and valves... not a good idea to idle any diesel for that matter for more than 10 mins.
Why the fuck is he revving a cold engine? You can raise a few hundred rpm to high idle, but no more till this at operation temp or at least slighty warm. Thats just stupid, reving a cold engine, moron.
Metal does not like to go from cold to hot or vis versa. It become brittle and fails.
True, Detroits are tougher than nails. Just uneccesary wear in my book. Probably would have no large effect even if you did that ever time you started it cold, but still...
@Xx69roadrunnerxX If it's on a dyno there is a good chance there is a water heater/oil heater for pre-heating the engine... My dyno has that facility...
I dont know the person who ownes it maybe? Its a training engine so why wouldnt you want to train correctly?
No-im not a Detroit tech, but it doesnt take a genius to understand how metal reacts to large and sudden fluctuations in temp. and cylinder pressure OKAY!
Do whatever the fuck you want with it....I dont care.
I don't know if any of you agree with me or not, but if you listen to the sound of a motorcycle it sounds like a smaller version of the 8V71 and 8V92 engines. Sounds Hardcore!!!
hey jackass, are you leaving nasty comments to EVERYONE ELSE calling the guy in this video an idiot.. Scroll down, you'll see. And don't be jealous that my 8v71 is destroy anything you can throw at.
Wow, thanks! I have wondered all my life why American buses (Fishbowls et c) rev so damn high... They don't! They are two-strokes! LOL this is one light bulb moment for me..
I have a vehicle with a manual fuel pump...it will NOT reprime if I do it that way. It needs some good 30 second cranking bursts if it's going to re-prime itself. Brand new fuel pump too.
This engine won't be much differant in this respect.
If it's got an electric fuel pump, flip the key on and wait a minute, then just turn it till it fires.
Great video! I would say that the instructor knew what he was doing. I would do the same thing in small increments too considering Detroits are famous for Runaways when the fuel system isnt fully purged of trapped air. Great job!

@indianguy51 - I've also heard that throwing a phone book into the turbo will choke it out as well... Does this really work?

So f'n annoying having him crank it for 1 second stop, 1 second stop, 1 second stop!

shew those 8v71 sounds like they are going to fly apart at around 2600. doing adjustments and running the rack can be a pain though.

Plus, that's an 8V-92, it has a turbocharger.

exactly, and actually they somehow last longer while redlined then if they are lugged along at low rpm

just like 2-stroke dirtbikes and snowmobiles... you wil foul plugs all day long if you dont rev the piss outta them

@DionysiosA76 ....there diesel they dont have plugs and you dont mix oil in them they have an oil sump......

@jrasmuson There was no reason to do that. There was white smoke present. Nice video though :-)

@jrasmuson Then explain the white smoke from the exhaust.... or was it really really cold and it was just water vapour???
