There was not intent to "punish" the player, therefore the rule doesn't apply. The QB was hit a millisecond after releasing the ball while in the grasp. Cowboy fans are miffed that their QB was lit up and got knocked out of the game.

3. No player shall strike a runner with the crown or top of the helmet in an attempt to punish him.

This was spearing, and hitting someone with the crown of your helmet can break your neck. According to NCAA publications, defensive players are 4 times more likely to suffer spinal injuries.

In this case, spearing should be called to teach Number 95 (Henry Smith) a lesson, because he is the one who will eventually suffer a broken neck if he continues to hit with his head down. Zac Robinson could have suffered a broken rib, but Henry Smith that would be a quadriplegic. Very dangerous!

It was not a late hit, nor was it a spear. He buries his facemask into his chest. Plus the only way it is considered a "spear" is if you are trying to cause harm to the player. Read the rule book.

It is obvious after watching this video in real time that the hit occurred immediately after the ball was released. It is misleading to watch this play in slow motion. In slow motion, appears that the defender had time to stop his momentum when in fact he did not in real time. Clean hit all around.

Let's see, the replay on the DVR is at 1/15 the speed of the original replay (which is also slowed down). Robinson released the ball at the 1:08 mark and gets hit by the second defender at the 1:13 mark. That's 5 seconds that go by while the film is slowed to 1/15 speed. Again, the original replay was slowed a little from real time. By my math, less than 1/3 of a second went by between when he released the ball and got hit. Definitely should have been a flag there...
