Bless the Spoonman! I saw him perform a couple days ago and I never knew what an inspiration he was for Soundgarden and so many other artists. He's an incredible performer and a wonderful soul - take the opportunity if you ever get the chance to see the Spoonman play his spoons because he may not being doing it much longer - his body is falling apart and he has little money to take care of himself :( I only hope he is not forgotten in the wake Soundgarden.

So what is Spoonman's story? Someone around me told me he was a neglected child that didn't have much, started playing with spoons & ended up turning them 'into an art.' If you really know the guy, please tell.

Hey, He had a mother and stepfather there for him. His stepfather called him Artis, which he has as his legal name alone, no last name etc. His mother bought him a set of musical spoons at a young age, and the rest is history..

Thank you for clearing that up. Funny how rumor's start isn't it? I used to always feel bad for the guy b/c of that story. I'm glad that wasn't the case. He is awesome!

The rumor is to an extent true. Artis has always struggled, but refuses in anyway to be commercial. There are tons of videos, some interviews on this site, check them out very interesting.
