Thx really helpful.. I def wanna try putting my mic closer to the fretboard like you did.. My bedrooms acoustics doesnt sound great n dont have the money to treat the room as well.. thx again.. dont have a condenser mic.. only a shure m57 4 now but i will make it work!
@Th3C4ke Shure sm81 är en mikrofon som är väldigt bra för gitarr. Den ligger på mellan tre och fyra tusen men den låter bra och du kan använda den till mycket.
Now I understand why using a pencil-shape microphone than the one that stands on a base. If you wanted to get close to the second type, you'd have to make a lot of effort. Not so much with the first type.
@montezumasrevenge I think they suck too and I think I can explain why. It just has this chicken squacking sound. It is all high mids and just sounds really brittle. Absolutely no warmth. Pencil condensor 6 inches from the 12th fret is the way to go.
The 12th Fret with a single mic really is the fool proof way to go isn't it? It sounds good pretty much all the time. Do you double track then since you're only using one mic? If you only single track where do you pan the guitar in the mix?
@Celticsaint777 I actually use two mics. A Pencil on the 12th like I said, and a large diaphragm condenser approximately 1 foot from the sound hole but now directly in front of it. If you put the mic directly in front of the hole then you get all that wind noise. So to answer your question, I do double track but with two different mics.
the mic holder near the base of the guitar where the neck joins the body says "shure", the company that makes the m57? just a thought that caught my mind, other than that, this video definatly helped me. the sad part is that i have a radio shack dynamic mic :(. but i do plan on getting a condenser mic soon.
Seen as i have an amp plug on my computer, i just insert an amp lead to my acoustic. Then Add a transformer cap to make it fit into the microphone input. All the sound around me is not captured, and is just focused on guitar!! ;]]
I thought that phantom power got it's name from the fact it is carried over the positive and negative lines of balanced mic cable. Because the noise from the power supply is identical on the pos and neg and the pos and neg are 180 degs out of phase the noise is completely canceled and can no longer be heard therefore providing a silent or "phantom" power power supply for powering condenser microphones, DI boxes etc, but I could be wrong.
My point was if the power is coming from the battery it can't be strictly be called phantom because it's not coming via the balanced cable. Anyway I'm just nit picking :)
OH, I understand, you're right. I got what you were talking about now, but I think the companies still market them as "phantom powered" But anyway, yeah, I didn't think about that.
What about using the mic` AND the pre amp at the same time..?That way you can use the mic to get as natural a sound as possible and the pre amp signal to add effects or for more extreme EQ settings etc..!Why does nobody mention this technique....?
Thanks for dis video. Jus one thing though. It sounds like you are moving your head a lot so the the volume of your voice keeps getting louder and softer and that makes it a bit harder to listen to.
Thanks for sharing your recording ideas. I was wondering why I was getting so much resonance and bass and alot of unwanted overtones. My mic was not only too close to the sound hole but was placed directly in front of it. Your video will solve my problem.
I use an MXL 991 condenser mic, should I look into buying a different mic?
Also what kind of guitar are you using?

Whats the name of your mic?
I play acoustic finger picking style like Andy McKee, and i'm in need of a recording mic..
I don't sing, just playing the guitar. Is there any special mic that sounds better if you just recording the guitar?
Sorry for my English, i'm just a 15 years old kid from Sweden.. haha

Phantom power sends a DC electrical power through microphone cables to operate microphones that contain active electronic circuitry.
voltage is usually between 12 and 48 Volts,
The DC phantom power is transmitted simultaneously on both pin 2 and 3, with the shield (pin 1) being the ground.
hope that help you understand a litle bit ;)
my suggestion for the best mic regarding budget/quality mather is rode nt1000.
the preamp is an important part too if you want to really get something good.

Thanks for the tips!
Can you suggest me some good condenser microphones under a 100 bucks.
I came across Nady SPC-25 with good reviews, and it doesn't require Phantom Power.
osfarooki 2 years ago
All condensors require phantom power. Go with an MXL.
CodyAllenmusic 2 years ago 6
Or an internal battery.
readerwriter 2 years ago
Yeah, or an internal battery, in which the case still means that it has phantom power acquired from a battery, it could be from a mixer also.
CodyAllenmusic 2 years ago

Anyhoo .. great tutorial.

Yes, you are exactly correct... But did I even say anything to contradict that? lol.

the MXL 990, 991 package is pretty decent for recording acoustics.... they're real cheap, the set goes for under 100 bucks...
