Teddy Riley is a more of a producer and music arranger, and not really a singer. This song is entitled "Teddy's Jam" which means he's the focal point of the song, so we're listening to what Teddy does best. Had it been entitled "Aaron's Jam", I'm sure it would have had more lyrics. You are right though, it was a hit back then, now it's a classic!
