@TheMartialartsJedi I think martial arts is the art of beating the shit out of someone. The whole, slef respect, spiritual stuff is great if you are that type of person. But look at guys like the Diaz brothers or Brock Lesner. These people are not very respectful, yet they are among the best martial artists today.

I understand martial arts has a deep tradition of respecting opponents and oneself, but at its primal core, martial arts is the art of physical combat, it is the art of destroying your opponent, being faster, more accurate, and more powerful. It is about physical dominance, and sadly, being a nice guy is not a requirement. I don't really like guys who act like assholes, but in the end, what matters more is how fun they are to watch to fight.

Guys like Nick and Nate Diaz, Brock Lesner, Wanderlei Silva,, (Jon Jones is more discreet), Matt Hughes, and Chael Sonnen are just a few prime examples of mixed martial artists who have a well recorded history of being very, very disrespectful to there opponents and all these guys still happen to be some of the best fighters in the entire world. And you can't face these guys and say, 'your not real martial artists'.

@TheDTD500 I am saying that you as a person, choose how you wish to treat others. That is our own personal, conscious decision that we all have to make. I feel that many martial arts do teach and support discipline and respect to oneself and the environment, but at its core, yes, martial arts is the art of seeing who is the best combatant...and being a sweet respecting guy is just not a requirement. Your a martial artist if you train and fight like one, personality is your choice.

@TheDTD500 well...if your a martial artist...you stop whenever the ref stops you. The job of a martial artist is to win the fight at all costs. Back in the day, there were no refs and when two men fought on the field of battle, it was to the death. Whether you choose to show mercy to your opponent or not depends on you and the circumstances.
