I think American or any other English-speaking markets are still hard for Asian singers to get big, not because they lack any talents but because the general environment/attitude/etc that the people in those countries have... Why not in Chinese? I'm not sure... But quite a lot of Korean singers also promote their works in Chinese-speaking countries... Maybe it's just that Japanese is a little easier for korean people to learn than Chinese?
Actually, it's the other way around. The Korean and Japanese languages are more similar in grammar (and even sound) when compared to the Chinese language.
What happened was that Korean borrowed Chinese characters and brought over to Japan so Japan also borrowed Chinese characters. But Chinese and Japanese + Korean are not very related. In fact, Japanese + Korean may or may not be related. Linguists are still disputing if they are part of the Altaic languages (includes Turkish).
