Hey, man. I just comment on another video of yours about these basses. I have a 1983 T-40 in the 'burst. Such amazing basses with tones to die for. Do you remember how you had the controls set in this video? It sounds so nice!
@aczeppelindc2908 Not really a hard song. It's just 6 basic riffs played in a specific order. Spend a few days learning each riff, and when you feel confident, put it all together.
how do you keep WMG from taking this off for copyright? I've tried to upload my bass cover of it many times, but they take it down the second its uploaded =\

@Do21or12Die: Thank you so much for your kind comment! Actually, this video was blocked by the copyright owners when I uploaded it, but I disputed the decision and they granted my request. Same thing happened recently with my version of Rush's "Animate". Actually, the only of my videos that has been completely blocked is the one with my version of Tower of Power's "What Is Hip?", decision that I also disputed but the people from WMG didn't change their mind.
@Do21or12Die: Using YouTube's dispute form, I asked to reconsider the decision in the most polite way I could, explaining that I'm not receiving any money from my videos and that I'm only using the original recording as a background for my playing. (continued...)
@Do21or12Die: I know it isn't a valid argument since, according to the law, you can't use a copyrighted work in any way without permission, no matter if you are profitting from it or not. You mean you were able to recognize what each note was without playing it on bass? When I learn a song by ear I just kinda guess around until the pitches match.
@BassGuitarGuy128: Exactly. When you have a good training on aural skills (relative pitch, mainly), you don't need an instrument to know which notes are being played. Thank you for your comment! :^)
@jazzrichard: Thank you so much for your comment! Although I transcribed the whole line and I had the sheet music on the stand in the same room, I wasn't reading it when I recorded the video. I was doing the exercise of not looking at the fingerboard while playing this and that's why I'm looking to the front most of the time. (continued)
@jazzrichard: And yes, sometimes I rush my playing and I noticed it when I was editing the video, but I was moderately satisfied with the take and didn't want to record another one (many failed attempts before this one).
Several years ago my dad showed me his T-40 from when he was in college (1979 version) and he never really used it so I adopted/stole it and have been playing it for the past 2 or 3 years... it's one solid bass. It being my first bass, my arms instantly declare any other smaller bass as wimpy and inferior. :P
Hey i have a Rickenbacker 4003 and a obviously love it to death, but if you are on a tighter budget this is an AMAZING!! sounding bass for the price. You can find them on E-Bay all day for like 300$ and they are in my opinion the best bass's for the price ever made.
@dirtyfunkybass: Thank you so much for your comment! On the video description you'll find the settings I used. Anyway, the Peavey T-40 is a "naturally ballsy" bass and it's not difficult to get that tone. Actually, I consider the T-40 one of the fattest-sounding passive basses ever made and to me, its tone is sort of a blend between a P-bass and a Rickenbacker. It's a great instrument.
nice job man ! that bass line completely kicked me out the very first time I heard it and more than 30 years later this number is still my favorite, from my favorite bass player and from my favorite band, among all . The Lemon Song is a Monument, and you climbed it : hats off !
dude that is one of the best covers of this song i've heard, not to mention that you've got one of the best tones with that Peavey that i've ever heard, great cover man!
Hello, again,I`m gladly surprised to see that you`ve selected nearly EVERY song I consider to have good basslines..to say, not many people know this Zep`s Lemon Song..And I loved it because of its basline..That makes me feel I `m right!!!
By the way, which bass was that of J.Paul `s?
I can asume it`s a Fender, but, I do not know which the model was and it`s not a common one, not nowadays(humbuckers?)
I noticed that, on listening to Babe, I`m gonna leave you,1969-Can you answer on this?
tell me why players shouldn't look at their instruments. Give me a reason why this is bad... if you're good, does it matter what you look at? LMAO... ass
Not that it's bad. It's just that playing without looking whenever you can do it is the best way to develop your muscle memory, which is really useful on sight-reading situations and playing unlined fretless instruments. Thank you for your comment! :)
@danslatente How exactly will you be able to follow the music while you are looking down at your instrument??? Oh yeah, YOU DON'T READ, so this isn't an issue LOL
Sounds great. I was in the market for a bass and I researched the T40. These videos helped make the decision real easy for me. I bought one on ebay and it's on it's way!
plus he also plays like a bagillion other instruments b/c he was a session recorder for whatever bands needed him. OH!, and he completely improvised this entire bassline on his first shot because he had forgot to come up with something before recording. JPJ is my hero. :D cheers
The T-40 is an awesome instrument. Built like a tank, it has a very own character. But it can also sound like classic Fender/Gibson basses thanks to its simple and clever wiring. The only drawback of this bass is it weights a ton.
I can't remember, man. Probably two weeks after transcribing it. What I can tell you is that transcribing the line was a big help for memorizing it. BTW, haven't played it in a long time, so I must re-learn it (but it will be easier anyway). Thank you for your comment!
welcome! well you made an awesome cover of it and its definitely not an easy song, nothing but improvisation in it. I can play lots of stuff on bass but this is probably the hardest thing i could be able to play
Sure! Go to stewmac (.) com and follow this path (posting the link here is a real hassle): Look on the "Departments" section for "Tools" and then > All tools - Wrenches > Pocket Truss Rod Wrenches. The item # 6106, for 5/16" Gibson nut is the one you need.
Let me know if you need further assistance. Thank you for your comment! :)
keep it funky man (y), this is a fine example of why JPJ and bonzo were the backbone in led zeppelin. I would like to have myself a bassguitar.. :( fuck the communism and its exchange rates...
No, man. I haven't been able to put the three-finger technique to work for me aside from single string triplets/gallops. What you see here is strict two-finger plucking. Thank you for your comment!
One of the greatest bas lines ever. J.P.J. is one of the great bass players of all time. Between his bass work and compositional work for Zep, Imo far too under rated for his overall contribution to Zep. I'd like to see you live, for while you've got it pat, it seems yor timing and "feel" are hindered by trying to match the track. Good job.
gotta love the T-40! I bought my first one back in '87 when I first started to play...had a car accident and couldn't hold a pen let alone play and after a year and a half ended up selling it (cried all the way to the pawn shop, honestly) In 2008, I bought my second T-40 which although the nerve damage I sustained makes playing difficult, My 16 yo daughter is now playing it and loving it. Personally, its one of the best basses out there, if you can find one.
The song "In Orbit" is on The T-Birds 3rd album "Butt Rockin". Also his playing on "Let Me In" and "C boy's Blues" both from their 1st album (retitled) "Girls Go Wild" Thanks for your video
Nice job! Well done! One of my favorite basslines from one of my favorite bass players. In my opinion. John Paul Jones has been a much under rated bass player. He has often stated that James Jamerson was one of his major influences and to my ear you can hear it in this song even though James wasn't a blues player. One of my other favorite bass players is the late Keith Ferguson, the original bass player for The Fabulous Thunderbirds. You should check out his playing on a song called "In Orbit".
I agree with short . your playing enhanced and put a different spin on the song. Always thought is sucks bass is always mixed way down, except for funk and porn soundtracks.
Im Pretty stoned right now and that triped me the fuck out... good shit man... 5***** kill shit you got good fret control and i nice strong sound to it... i also hardy seen you look down..
rock music realy evolved from blues and country, what brought blues to the country were african americans, thanks to them we have Korn,Slayer,Metallica,Halen, etc...
I think it's great!! What is really bizarre is that JPJ walked into a tiny studio in California one day 40 yrs. ago and played this off the top of his head. To argue over copying that one time event 40 yrs.. later (and beyond) is silly. That's when you get into Beethoven, Bach and Mozart.
Not really man, its all blues intervals. Songs like these are why Zepp is the greatest. They start up on a blues jam and these notes came out. This line in particular, JPJ knows the chord progression, the phrasing, and from there fits in his rhythm with John Bonham, stamps it with what he's feeling and out pops one of the greatest bass lines of all time. Great job on the cover man.
Not perfect, you know that already, but impressive nevertheless. Peavey had a reputation for being "uncool" back in the day, but the T-40 was an awesome and versitile instrument. Good job dude!
nobody cares about your obnoxious opinion. Your a big talker over the net, but your a fucking little shit who has nothing to say. This was a great cover of a long busy song.
dude, lay off a little, yeah it isnt perfect, but nobody can feel the bass exactly like John Paul Jones, and hes trying, i give him more credit than the people out there criticizing other people's hours of effort
Can anyone believe how extraordinary this is?!! My god what preparation you show and what a fabulous technique you possess. I have never seen any bass player use their left hand little finger so much but to such advantage. You're soooo wonderful!!!!!
kick ass im learning this on bass and this was a great help thank you

@ledzepacbasslyn423 I don't really either. The T-40 has way more output and less distortion of tone.

@shedisek a friend of mine has one (ric) and i played it for the first time ever.....i thought it was overrated as hell i really was expecting more

my t-40 needs some neck adjustment do you know what type of wrench i need?
ColdToiletSeats 2 years ago

hey once it gets faster are you three finger plucking???
mrMCGEEofTWELVE 2 years ago
No, man. I haven't been able to put the three-finger technique to work for me aside from single string triplets/gallops. What you see here is strict two-finger plucking. Thank you for your comment!

Man, that's REAL nice!

Hi mate! First of all, great video! Now i have a question, i have a Peavey T-40 too, how put you the knobs of your T-40 to get that sound?

EricCirca6566 2 years ago
Nice job!

I'm lovin' that old school Peavey T-40 bass! Peavey should re-issue them!!

make it more smooth and connected dude....some of your notes are too short and there needs to be more fluidity between them

flat?

I agree with short . your playing enhanced and put a different spin on the song. Always thought is sucks bass is always mixed way down, except for funk and porn soundtracks.

rock music realy evolved from blues and country, what brought blues to the country were african americans, thanks to them we have Korn,Slayer,Metallica,Halen, etc...

i don't understand the hate for this cover i thought it sounded ace
RICECAKEGOESWHEE 3 years ago
I think it's great!! What is really bizarre is that JPJ walked into a tiny studio in California one day 40 yrs. ago and played this off the top of his head. To argue over copying that one time event 40 yrs.. later (and beyond) is silly. That's when you get into Beethoven, Bach and Mozart.
solowbass 3 years ago
Not really man, its all blues intervals. Songs like these are why Zepp is the greatest. They start up on a blues jam and these notes came out. This line in particular, JPJ knows the chord progression, the phrasing, and from there fits in his rhythm with John Bonham, stamps it with what he's feeling and out pops one of the greatest bass lines of all time. Great job on the cover man.
shaggydoo021 3 years ago 2
Not perfect, you know that already, but impressive nevertheless. Peavey had a reputation for being "uncool" back in the day, but the T-40 was an awesome and versitile instrument. Good job dude!

He is not a pro and it's a hard bass line so give him a break. Bass is not as easy an instrument as it looks.
NickInMesa 3 years ago
Agreed. Everyone thinks bass is so damn easy.pick it up and find out for yourself!! Good job sir. I have been trying this one for a loooong time
meathead66 3 years ago
Each time I was demo-ing to buddies, there was always one who was growing impatient to show that he could do it too.
As soon as he was strapped with the bass all you hear was buzz-dooom-buzz-buzz-squeesh-buzz

dude, lay off a little, yeah it isnt perfect, but nobody can feel the bass exactly like John Paul Jones, and hes trying, i give him more credit than the people out there criticizing other people's hours of effort

If it angers you, then post a better one and stop this video. He also states in his comment his playing is not terrific.

Can anyone believe how extraordinary this is?!! My god what preparation you show and what a fabulous technique you possess. I have never seen any bass player use their left hand little finger so much but to such advantage. You're soooo wonderful!!!!!
