Very interesting....also for the fact that, whilst time has obviously gone some way to mending old wounds, theres a palpable tension between all four men still present.
@BelatedCommiseration I adore PC but...I think the reason for the tension was that Peter was so drunk, the others saw him as a loose cannon (which he was). Not only was he slurring his words, but his thought and speech were slower. Very sad.

@ThePythonfan It's rather amazing that there was never any crossover between these guys and the Monty Python crew... or am I speaking from ignorance? I mean, did any of these guys ever work with anyone from Python?
FYI I expect you to live up to your screen name and provide the definitive answer here!
@TroyOi Look from what I know no crossover has been between them whatsoever...I mean the 3 of them Peter Jonathan and Alan worked several times with the Pythons one of the best times is Secret policeman's Ball. And Peace In Our times with John Cleese and Peter or in pete Cook and Company again. There was always a sort of mutual admiration.Beyond the Fringe cast were heroes to the Pythons. But then when they worked together they thought the Pythons were great.Heard Peter in an interview saing that..
@ThePythonfan Now you've got me totally confused. By "crossover", I just meant, did any of the Python folks ever work with these guys. (And, by the way, why did you leave Dudley out of your list?) In any case, your answer is clearly yes, they did do some work together. Thanks!
@TroyOi Ooops...I am so sorry I thought you meant "arguement" haha! But yes and they have worked together indeed.I have left Dudley out of my list because while Peter and the rest worked with the Pythons he was in America.Only a few times before the 70s he was with them. After that he did one or two things with Peter and then went to America.Much later they reunited for Secret Policeman's Ball and other stuff. That's why I left him out!Otherwise I wouldn't think of it I love Dudley he's my fav!
@ThePythonfan Oh, so I gather "crossover" is one of those words that doesn't quite make it over the Atlantic intact. Maybe it was a poor choice of words even from the Yankee standpoint. Sorry.
At 3:20 when Peter blows that huge puff of cigeratte smoke all over Alan Bennett while his talking to Parkson. You wouldn't get that now in a talk show.
I thought it very entertaining all the same. Aidan McArdle had a pretty good handle on Dud, while Rhys Ifans's portrayal of Cook was hilarious and tragic.
i know smoking will kill you, and i know i am putting myself up for instant and justified ridicule, but Peter Cook does look cool when he smokes! I know, i know.....
@redteapot1 As right as you are, Cook may well have looked cool waving a plastic dog turd in front of his nose. Not only that, he's obvioulsy wildly wasted in this clip, and still probably more charismatic than your average Hollywood 'legend'.
@redteapot1 It's not really the fag though is it. You could have a tosser smoke one and look stupid. Peter was just at ease and confident with himself so it doesn't matter what he's doing he still looks it.
@tommarjuki But he wasn't at ease or confident with himself at all and that's one reason he smoked so much and definitely the reason he drank himself to death at such a young age
I've been wandering through the peter cook interviews on here and barely seen him without a cigarette in his hand in any of them. Hard work, having a 60-a-day habit..
Great video. And I'm glad I've been reading some of the other comments. I didn't know there were others out there who found Pete *extremely* attractive as well as funny!
Peter seems visibly angered by Dudley's remark that Peter is "...aggressive." Peter's face is a study in fury, and the stage director seems to have clued in too, as there is a quick pan to another guest, and the topic is quickly changed.
Aye Peter's so drunk... he delivers what he thinks is a funny line and get's no response. Poor Dud - I'd rccomend Not Only But Always - it's a biopic on Peter and Dudley.
That biopic was a hatchet job on Peter Cook. I'd rather remember him as one of the greats of comedy than a depressed alcoholic which that drama singly showed him to be.
yeah me too, but you have to face the truth sometimes... he was an alcoholic.... not so much depressed all the time but he wasn't the happiest of people
Apparently that biopic was taken from manly one bio of him written of him in 1997, and is only one view of his life. Anyway how do you know that some of that drama wasn't dramatic license and not fact? Biopics are not complete documentaries they are dramas with highted reality to exaggerate certainly incidents in his life, to provide entertaiment.
I know someone who was friends with Peter, he told me that he could be a happy drunk and depressed drunk... I don't want to get into a fight with you over this.
expressing an observation about the drama "Not Only But Always". I know that Peter was a chronic alcoholic and he suffered from depression throughout his adult life. Your haven't answered my question about the programme: can we rely on these drama to give us factual evidence about some body's life? Especially as complex as Peter's was? Surely we can have an intelligent adult discussion over this point?
yeah i understand, I'm expressing my opinion. I know we cant rely on a biopic - take Sid and Nancy for instance - but I know someone who said it was pretty close to the truth
A year later, I'll agree with you on this, I re-watched it and it wasn't made incredibly well at all. But apparently it *is* close to the truth according to someone who was friends with Peter Cook in his last few years...
peter cook what a drunk, he made everyone on that show feel uneasy, apparently after the show he went to the hotel bar and got wasted and ended up being pick up by the police and taken back to the hotel
I'm terribly fond of Alan Bennett; have listened to "Beyond The Fringe" on vynil and audio tapes so many times and never had the chance to see any video clip; so am very happy with the You Tube stuff!!! 6GRUE
have you heard of TALKING HEADS it's a BBC RADIO COLLECTION 100 % Alan Bennett.if not go to bbc audio tapes and order it on line. a chip in the sugar is my favorate
Thanks really interesting stuff. Cook is so mullered it's a wonder he can still do characters. Maybe Youtube could do a context wiki for these types of footage if the team that made them are around to add notes and stuff. That would be brilliant. Like for example I have no idea what the American tour they refer to is about.
I can remember this one airing. I was quite put out when after this everbody started calling Dud "Cuddly Dudley" I saw him first & named him same. Damned bougiose!!
He seems to be quite drunk in this. He also used to turn up for the 'Behind The Fridge' shows being almost unable to stand. Alcoholism is a bitch. (n)
I am quite surprised how well spoken he still is with all that booze down him...
