I lived on Woodbine Street, between Cypress and St. Nicholas avenues. I remember the old Ciro's restaurant across from Key Food. And, yes, you're right: the old Madison Theater was beautiful and should have been designated a landmark.
Commenting to: rdgwd 237: Thanks for updating these videos. It's strange seeing my old Queens neighborhood like this. So many of the stores have long gone. I remember the bank restaraunt & Arthur Threacher's & Murkens too. I wish things would stay the same, but unfortunately they don't. It was fun seeing my old neighborhood again. I'm just sad they closed both movie theaters down. Bummer!
I remember the old Ridgewood. I loved it, I can see all the old stores, Woolworths, Kresges, Urdangs, Lerner Shops. a chicken rotisserie store, Glendale Dept. Store, I swent to St Pancras School and Church. lived on 65th Place, off Central Ave. One block up further was Myrtle Ave. Anyone remember Aggies Candy store? beautiful church on Central too. MJullers Delicatessan? Across from that was a Safeway Store,
i was in myrtle today and saw the people puting up the decortaions up. i went to duane reade and nothing much going on. but i didnt hear the m train because its not working this weekend. i went to liberty pretty big just to be a department store i know why cause it was madison theatre. went into rudys expesive stuff great cakes.
@rdgwd237 do you have any old videos of myrtle ave before it looked like this if you do please put it up
omg! I was looking for pictures or video of my old Ridgewood Queens house.I also used to go to St.Matthais Wow. The cvs used to be a big skating rink too!! wow..you made my day!! :) Thank you so so much!!!
wow another great video. I remember the bickfords talked about below. To fill in a few more blanks at putnam/Myrtle just past the theater was a HOWARD mens clothing store. Got my communion suit there I think. on the other side of Myrtle one or two doors down on Putnam was Stahls bakery (made great Black forest cake)
Out near Myrtle and Decatur was a Times Square store. Near Wyckoff Avenue was GOTTLIEBs a Jewish deli type of restaurant. You have no idea how these videos are making me smile...
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed my video. I will be making more. This is just a hunch but by looking at your channel name tgimbel50...Do you have 2 sisters..one named Linda?
Yes, I have two sisters, my younger sisters name is Linda. My older sister Barbara pasted away some time ago. How do you know this? We lived on St. Nicholas Ave across the street from St. Brigids RC Church.
You stated that you lived at St Nicholas/ Grove, went to St. Brigid, as most of us did, but the biggest hunch came from your channel..tgimbel50. I lived in the neighborhood. Most kids in the neighborhood knew each others name by sight even if they were not friends. I remember your sister Linda, she had blonde hair. I have a slight recollection of your other sister Barbara, so sorry she has passed. I made another video of Saint Nicholas Ave. Take a look, I am sure it will spark more memories.
I've waited a couple of days to give someone else a chance to jump in, but it looks like it's going to stay a private conversation. I read on a related site that the Steuben Day parade began on Myrtle Ave in 1957 or 1959. I could be wrong but I think it was 1956. The parade began at Durow's at 80th St. and ended at Wyckoff Ave. It was quite a turnout.
Two more old landmarks: Ridgewood Grove and Schwaben Hall. Channel 13, long before it became public television, used to televise wrestling matches from the Grove. I'm not sure if my memory is playing tricks on me, but I seem to recall that when the train left Wyckoff headed for Seneca, you could see a notice painted on the side of Schwaben Hall that the Bund met there. If I didn't actually see it, I heard of it. The Bund was an American Nazi group in the 1930s, very active in Ridgewood.
Wow, Hitchcock and Fonda in Ridgewood. Last summer a movie with Bruce Willis/Tracey Morgan called Cop Out was shot in Ridgewood. I think it opened recently......Boy, what a downslide from those Hitchcock days....
The old Lerner's, now NY company, defnately had a back entrance on Onderdonk, however, Woolworth's also had a back entrance onto Onderdonk. I also remember Kresgee's having a staircase to a lower level....Lerner's never had that staircase..it was always one level...
@rdgwd237 Stranger Among Us and Shining Through are 2 different 1992 Melanie Griffith movies. I haven't seen Stranger; so it was definitely Shining that had the vintage film of Myrtle Ave. Another movie with a Ridgewood scene is The Wrong Man by Hitchcock. My friend who lived on Catalpa saw Hitchcock and Henry Fonda down the block at the police station.
......oh and if you go farther down myrtle ave into glendale there was a McCroy's near saint pancras. I really miss those old five and dime stores....
NY Company used to be a Lerner's , a women's clothing store. As you walk along Myrtle, in the direction of Forest Ave, a store or 2 away from Lerner's was a Woolworth's. Farther down on the next block was Kresgee's, I think. Now, NY Company might have started a few decades ago; Lerner's was there when we moved to the area 50+ yrs ago. I think U might be wrong about the location of Kresgee's. I am almost positive that Lerners, woolworth, kresgee's were in business at the same time.....
@rdgwd237 I googlemapped 69th Ave and Onderdonk where 69th ends. Directly across Onderdonk is a wide, now boarded up building which I definitely remember was Kress or Kresge's. From the aerial view, you can see that the building bends left halfway back and narrows and goes through to Myrtle. If I got the street view of the right building, it would be NY Company. I'm talking more than 55 years ago.
At Decatur and Myrtle is the Post Office. The tall portion of the building used to be a theater, but I have forgotten the name. Next to it was a store that sold Bavarian kitsch, cuckoo clocks, leder hosen, und so weiter. There was a 1992 Melanie Grifith movie, Shining Through, in which she played a Ridgewood girl who, because she spoke German, became a spy during WWII. A terrible movie but it opens with a shot of Myrtle Ave in the day.
When I was very young, my grandma took me into Menninger's Bakery at 56-50 Myrtle. All the clerk's and all the customers (except Grandma) spoke German. On the other side of the street was a men's-boys' store named Burkey's where I got my first suit when I graduated from 8th grade. To get there, we walked down 69th Ave to Onderdonk and, sometimes stopped in the Kresge's (or Kress??) Dept. store whose side entrance was on Onderdonk. The front entrance is now the NY Company. To be continued.
Great video. Memories from my past. I grew up on St. Nicholas Ave. and Grove St. and went to St. Bridgets Catholic School. I went on to Aviation HS in Queens then left Ridgewood and joined the Marines in 1970. Do you remember Bickfords which I believe was near the Madison Theater?
Ridgewood!! Currently living there towarsd Cleveland HS. Man you must have gone at a very early time, cause Myrtle ave. is usually buzzing with people anytime after 3pm. Very nice video though, and even I moved here not so long ago (probably about 10 years) its nice to go back in time and see what it used to be. Since ive moved here, Ridgewood has changed alot.
there usedto be a good coffeeshopthere is it still thertedo you remember the mj train that went to downtown brooklyn

And the Milkman delivering the milk and cream, the horses hooves covered with
rubber to muffle the hoof beats early in the A.M..
