I threw a PJ996 alkaline battery into a fire and it made a bit of a noise but didn't fly out.

you should try a d-cell, a 9 volt has 6 small cells about the size of AAA while the D is one big cell. I'm not sayin it will do this everytime, but the one time i did it i got a pretty good pop
