I sent you a video response of a day when I was in the same area, near Brighton Ont, filming the CPR on a day where it was -20 before the wind. Very cold, but a beautiful day none the less.
Does the rails get hot after a long train rolls by? - No. Even in winter, the rails stay ice cold. The steel wheels just roll along like on glass.
Now, if the train was moving at say 50mph...and suddenly the train went into emergency where some of the wheels lock up, then yes....but it will be the wheels taking the heat. That's how flat spots happen. The wheels gets hot....sliding on the rails. Not rolling.
great footage I have done some shooting up there like this in the dead of the Canadian winter but I was in Banff Alberta on the CP nothng against CP but I prefer shooting the CN however I was up there for Christmas so why not shoot whats there LOL
Refering to the post about CN Gp40s does that include companies' Gps swallowed up by CN, or is that just Mainline Canada? Because here in Wisconsin I see gps like that all the time, (but i think thats switching, or its to curvy of a route for anything bigger) Hell, ive even seen Longnose gps out here in regular use, even alcos
This was great! This video was beside CanCoil in Codes Corners. I love the whinning sounds! What is that? I hear that a lot here at home. The CN main is a couple of blocks over from my house here in Amherstview.
thanks for the info. On the branch line in my town we have old CN GP40s I think they are with wide cabs, they are pretty cool espically seeing 2 of them lead 30 car train through town!
Yes and no. IC had the standard SD70 while Conrail, before it was taken over in 1999, bought SD70MAC's with standard cabs, a la Norfolk Southern specifications.
Widecab SD40-2 were only common on CN. Started in the 1970's, railroads and manufacturers alike jumped on board and made wide cabs standard.
EMD did try widecabs in the 1960's, with F45's and FP45's. ATSF, GN and Milw, jumped on that. These units were full width and length carbody's. Pumped up F units so to speak.
GE did try a wide cab in the BQ23-7 series for Family Lines (L&N - Seaboard System) in the 1980's. It was ugly. They're now relegated to B units and not many are around.
there is still alot of IC engines in original paint but they are slowly being repainted to CN. I wish I could see IC 6071, the original (1st?) SD40 built on a SD35 frame, but I found out it was stored in Memphis TN. AARGH! CN!!!! I would buy that SD40 unit from you and repaint it into original GM&O colors.
I feel the same way about the SD80MAC's. When it comes time to retire them, I hope NS donates at least one to our museum in PA and repaints it back to Conrail. From what I've heard, CR was the only road to buy them, and even bought the 2 demostrator units as well. I just hope that they're not lost without saving one, like the fate of the T1's and S1.
Canadian Pacific Railway retired their small fleet of SD90MAC's which were true 6000hp on November 20 2008. They were very troublesome. Numerous problems with them. Only ten years old. I don't think CP would set one aside for preservation.
The other SD90/43MAC's are still running well at 4300hp. 6000hp is a huge hurdle for the builders to overcome. 4000hp seems to be very adequate for the railroads of today.
I agree. I've heard it said that the whole reason for a 6000hp unit was to be able to run a single unit on a hot pig or triple crown train. The problem with that is, it's gotta be 100% reliable, and can any locomotive be trusted to do that.
The SD80MAC's are reliable engines. Proven technology. It was surprising that other railroads didn't order the SD80MAC. They all wanted higher hp. 5000hp was ample enough. Conrail placed an order for the SD80MAC's when the locomotive was only on the drawing board.
CP just ordered BRAND NEW SD90MACs last year, now their scrapping all of them. I hear there's only about 4 left, and CP is going to eventually scrap them too!
two other units I'd wish to obtain would be are one of the ex-EL SD45-2's from either NS, CSX or HELM, and one of the original SD40's that the old Chicago Great Western ran. A few still exist.
The new SD70M-2's really have a weird sound when they start building energy to move. I remember seeing the new SD70's with the flaired radiators when UP ordered them 4 years. You could hear them howling from over 5 miles away! Kind of like the old SD45's from the 1960's.
IT's funny how far trains actually travel. I was told that as of yesterday, CN 5785 was back in Halifax, NS doing local work. Must have come back on 120 or 308.
Great meet and horn! I can't imagine how cold that must've felt.... it sounds bad but it must've been horrible. At least the shots turned out fantastic!

Stupid question for you, does the rails get HOT after a long train like runs by? always wondered that!

@radionut63 - there never is a stupid question.
Does the rails get hot after a long train rolls by? - No. Even in winter, the rails stay ice cold. The steel wheels just roll along like on glass.

It's called "FRICTION" there will be a small variance in tempurature after a train goes by, wether it be winter or summer, might not be noticable
jmac2729 6 months ago
@radionut63 - The sound you hear of some wheels going "thud thud thud", is a flat spot.

CN Freight trains are so long. If I didn't love trains so much I couldn't imagine waiting for 2 CN trains to pass a crossing. Nice shot.

The CN GP40-2L(W)'s were the backbone of CN's fleet for years in the 1980's and 90's. There were 278 of them. Today, only 59 are left.

Nice meet! 5785 was on the Moncton/Saint John, NB run 405/406 on January 26th and 27th.
It also sounds like even though 8821 was the lead, they were using the horn from 5621.
saintjohnrailfan 3 years ago
it was 8821's horn as I saw the air waves from the horn but it didn't show up on the video.
ConrailSD70MAC 3 years ago
My mistake. It just sounded like the exact same horn when I saw 5621 back in November.
