This guy is terribly mistaken... The original Hebrew word was 'hebel', which means vapor, breath or midst. Vanity in Ecclesiastes shouldn't be interpreted as self pride, but as its Latin original meaning: emptiness or futility.

He's right all is vain...it might mean something to you but when you die it means nothing...because your DEAD! You have no rememberance of what you did when you die, you dont take anything with you, its just meaningless. Bible even says "there is nothin else better for man to do except enjoy himself but he will have to give an account for his action when judgement comes". So live wisely!

If one reads Ecclesiastes, it is obvious that " vanity" is not hubris. All the efforts to find meaning in life by the works of his own hands have fallen short; after all his efforts he still feels the emptiness he had when he started his various enterprises. The vanity of vanities is that all his efforts were in vain without God.

Michael's type of vanity, hubris, is presuming to be knowlegeable when you haven't done your homework, and broadcasting like an authority when your are not.

Of course Solomon wasn't justifying "doing things anyway" since it was all vanity, He was saying that there is no real point in the pursiut of earthly treasures and only the pursuit of God makes any sense in doing. I heard this episodeon the radio and was concerned that Savage may have taken that passage out of context.

Yeah, Savage is a brilliant man. Some times I think those same thoughts when I drives past a cemitary I see all those grave and think they once where alive and chasing wealth, houses, good looks ext.. and now look. All come to the same place both kings, presidents, stars, or peasants. Its all vanity and that's why the bible tries to get us to look at the after life which is eternal. Every ones pride will be brought down to the deep.

He is wise in this world. "Under the sun" , but he completely misses the point of Ecclesiastes. Vanity is emptiness, nothingness. The end of the book Solomon tells the reader that the whole point of life is to "fear the Lord and keep His commandments". We are to live for the Lord, and obey his law which is in the Bible.
