Hi there,

I found that the crest whitening strips work pretty good. I notice a difference the first few times I used it, but the more I used them though the less difference I saw.

As far as the whitening tooth paste and mouth washes, they don't seem to do anything at all. What worked the best for me was the Idol White product, it worked really quickly. They had a free sample offer so you can try it out and see how it works for yourself.

another way of whitening teeth is to take your lasso tool and then use the dodge tool on the teeth

This is brightening, not whitening... you did nothing with saturation!

I know it's not lossless, but I just use the desaturate tool on 8-12% opacity. It preserves shadows and brightens without needing the curves tool.

Instead of Lasso, the quick select probably would have grabbed those teeth in 2 seconds. 480p or higher res vids prolly would a made it easier to see the subtle change. overall good technique though! go wacom!

You really don't have to spend the time making a selection first. Just create your adjust layer, and make your initial adjustment. The whole photo will be adjusted at first. Now make sure your foreground color is white, and background color is black. Then "select all" (selecting the whole canvas), then push "delete". This takes away the effects of the adjustment. Then just paint with the brush where you want the effect. You can now make further adjustments. The whole thing takes about 20 seconds

Did you rasterize the smart object before you tried drawing on it?

That could be your problem.

When you open an image, you then need to go to Layer, Rasterize, then Layer or Smart Object.

this is really one of the quickest and simplest ways to whiten, thanks for the tut! So easy for a beginner to understand. I do use the other method "hues and saturations", but it's not always necessary and I find the "lightening" doesn't look as natural as the curves app. The curves method gives a super "pick-up" to any smile if I'm careful not to "overdo". I haven't used the pen tool much, lasso seems to work fine, but I'm going to give it a try! I like to learn new methods.

Using the dodge tool with "mid tones" selected at about exposure 24% and a soft feathered 8 pt brush is a LOT easier than this way.. you don't have to select anything. :) and it's available in CS3/4

The pen tool is much faster and more exacting than the lasso. It takes some time to really master it, but it would allow you to create a mask of these teeth in about 30 seconds.

The Levels Adjustment Layer is non destructive. If you goof, you can edit it at any time before you flatten the image.

It doesn't look different in the video, but if you do this on one of your images, you will notice the difference. When retouching, you work in small increments. If you apply too much whitening, everyone will know you've retouched the image.

I've had that comment several times. The YouTube video doesn't show the results of this technique. Try it on a full-sized image of a person with evenly stained teeth and you'll see the difference. I use this technique on my client's portraits all the time. It's subtle, but definitely noticeable.
