When I hear and see them playing in sessions like this,you can really tell that each instrument compliments the others whereas with some bands,I feel like they're all playing seperately,competing with each other. The first verse seems to be about the girl he's writing about being so caught up in the future that she is incapable of creating/sustaining a relationship in the present. The Plymouth is a car reference. Mary Timony is a musical artist and that's a reference to the music they were listening to. It's seems to be about a cross-country road trip, where Ben Gibbard was with a girl and learned that her past relationships (her bruise) was keeping her from moving on in relationship.
