thought id comment again considering i liten to this song everyday i think its my uncles fav track as well and im sure its up there in my dads fav as well ktf
C'mon guys keep this in perspective, i came on hear to listen to this great Bobby Hutton track and my fellow soul brothers are slagging each other off. I think if we take the best from both and forget some of the more poppy stuff we can get along. I personally liked the raw 60's sounds of Wigan and the stompers, but its nice now i'm getting on in life to dance to the more laid back slower sounds that came out of the Mecca. Surely there is room for all? I do like this Bobby Hutton record.
@SuperRiker1 perhaps you lack the knowledge or the faith of Dr Whatson , but to slum to the depths of your abuse shows your own lack of faith - or perhaps you don't understand what Northern Soul was all about : in 1974 Northern Soul wasn't a preservation society ; same as it wasn't in 1969 at the Wheel . Maybe some people kept the faith - but maybe you didn't ?
@herrhngthorpe You are entitled to your opinion - however biased and ill-informed it obviously is. However, it is immensely gratifying to see you adopting my OWN turn of phrase in your latest comments! At least you're beginning to master English, so my efforts have not been entirely in vain... Now if you could only master a cogent argument, and learn to distinguish genuine SOUL music from shitty uptempo POP, your development might advance beyond amoeba level even.
@jam1966ful But, once again I maintain that hardly ANY 70s recordings would have been played ANYWHERE in the North, had not the Mecca broken the almost total reliance on rare 60s "discoveries", the quality of which was definitely in decline by late 1974. My point being that without this significant shift in playlists (and subsequent dancing styles), whatever SOUL scene existed may well have degenerated towards the uptempo pop crap we saw increasingly played at Wigan from 1975 onwards.
Regardless wether it was a Mecca tune or Wigan and Mr ms who cares!.....i loved both.....it was great to see the refreshing changes in fashionista and trends at the Mecca.....we were young, carefree and thankfully i was part of it and still am ...roll on Soul in the Sun!...Dave from York formerly Burnley
I was totally indifferent to mekkakites ludicrous antics after 1976, pink afro wigs, whistles, smoke bombs, distress flares and whoop-whoop.Selective memories these mekkakites !!
@SuperRiker1 You must also know that Mary Chapman set up the Cleethorpes allnighters SPECIFICALLY to cover both Wigan and Mecca playlists, ie., old style stompers (inc. crap pop songs like "Country Girl","Cats Eyes", Rain), and more modern releases (Bobby Hutton, Lou Edwards, World Column, High Voltage, Brothers, Voices of East Harlem and the rest.) Why would we want to go somewhere to hear records that the Mecca had already dropped months earlier?
@drwhatson Because they were set within an entirely different range of tunes, which if the records have any cultural or musical references at all, would give different context perhaps giving a totally different experience. It also gives the tune a longer shelf life and brings it to a wider audience. What's up with that. Muppet.
top top tune heard it and loved it at wigan, blackpool, the ritz, whitchurch, etc just a fabulous anthem n its ours all of ours, shit hot , ive sacrificed n ive paid the price , propa or what !!!
Loved ALL the music - loved Wigan AND mecca ...and trust me MOST of us did, surely we all should be mature enough now not to not give a flying fuxx where was first played ?etc etc. It brings down our unique and special scene. Forget it!! ..what about the music ..briliant eh ? keep the faith. :))
Great tune and interesting to follow the comments. Why does YouTube not put comments in order any more so they're difficult to follow? I thought DrWhatson made some considered and articulate points. Wigan gets all the glory but stuck it's head in the sand when it mattered. But for the Mecca DJs, we would never have heard this stuff. You can understand Mecca attendees being a little fed when people make ill-informed claims and comments.
whatson is a self nonced pink knicked div ! All True Soulies love the music thousand nighters on ! n birken head dim wit Dr loves own juiced prescription not the class sounds posted !! know nowt safely tucked in by in bed by mums need to stop gobbing ! to late now but hit scene with respect tosser ! enough said ! Ktf real deal geezers !!
@SuperRiker1 Your so-called "true soulies" at Wigan etc. would never have even heard the record had not the Mecca picked up on 70s recordings in the first place - though I can't expect that simple fact to sink into your numbskull, you complete and utter prat.
OMG I cant believe that people are still keeping that petty argument going - Wigan V Blackpool! Boys, it was freakin 35 yrs ago. A whole lot of music has gone under the bridge since then.
@w00llyback It's been never about "Wigan vs. Blackpool". (I was totally indifferent to Wiganite ludicrous antics after 1975). However I refuse to allow Wigan's pathetic "Footsie generation" to rewrite the history of the Northern scene to reflect their own very limited experience when I know better.
Some of us need to grow up ! Classic hand clapper, not everyone's cup of tea, That's Northern and life at it's best, We can never please everyone ! KTF My friend. My opinion for what it's worth, Solid!
@drwhatson then us real old mecca lads used to go to a nighter so we were still dancing whilst you were rinsing yer pink knickers out for church next morning.
@drwhatson Not a div mate and this is my one and only name i've used on youyube, just thought i'd throw my two pennorth in for what it's worth, been going quite a while son, further back than wigan that's for sure. Don't be so contentious if you don't want taking to task for the things you publish.
@jam1966ful Fair comment, but personal insults of that nature are unlikely to prevent me speaking my mind - anyway, I've had far worse! (what is it with you lot and this "pink pants" obsession anyway? Surely there are more suitable forums on which to discuss your collective bizarre fetishes!)
P.S. Since I'm apparently a little older than you, I think your calling me "son" is a trifle patronising... :-)
@drwhatson just a dose of your own medicine and I just dug up the fashion comment off some of the other replies. Some of your comments towards Wigan are patronising too. If you'd like to raise the discussion a little more I find much Modern and 70's 80's soul lacking in character and rather generic in style, with none of the raucous excitement of earlier character filled sides.
@jam1966ful Believe me, my opinions on Wigan Casino are far more than patronising" - most of them are actually unprintable! (If you were on the scene C.1975, you ought to understand why...) As regards "modern"/ seventies Soul being samey, take a look at the Mecca playlists between 1975 and 1976. Bobby Hutton, Voices of East Harlem, Mel Britt, Earth, Wind & Fire etc. - there was no more musical variety on Planet earth!
Happy new year friend.

Bobby's father was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen and was sadly lost in action over Germany flying a red tailed P-51 Mustang.
This track is an stone cold northern soul classic and always reminds me of Kim White, he of the loud clapping fame and Tigger jacket :-)
