I always like to donate to Child's Play each year. For Gamers geeks associated with the internet, it is really OUR charity. Games for kids in hospitals.
I wish it were a legally legitimate charity, however, it is not...But, my wife and I have been asking if anyone would like to donate to a fund. We are using the fund to help a needy family, which will be chosen in the near future, with Christmas and eventually other families throughout the year. myNeedyNation--there's a YouTube channel for it and a website.
Seasons of Suppers is a nice one -- it provides pet food for the pets of people who use meals on wheels.

My favourites:
Red Cross - every one eligible, within a reasonable distance of a donation centre and who doesn't have a crippling needle phobia should donate blood!
Médecins Sans Frontières - MSF doctors have some *serious* guts to do the work that they do!
Child's Play - seriously, those guys are awesome
Singularity Institute - education and research into rationality and artificial intelligence
RSPCA - Surely no explanation is necessary!
Lots of other great charities, but those are my top ones.
